Most things cannot be stated with 100% certainty. I was not suggesting that everyone will feel the same way, but rather that there exists the possibility that someone might not want you to cover their songs.

You will never know if someone cares or not unless you ask them directly.

Assuming I can go, I would like to play a short set of my own, in addition to playing in KNI and Loyalty Day. I could use either a drummer or a rhythm guitarist, depending on what I can convince Ken to play for me. I could also play bass or guitar in another 2-3 short sets if anyone wants me to.

So far I got Campbell River to Boston at $708 per person.... I thought, hey , if I fly from CR to toronto or montreal, it's gotta be cheaper than that, then just hop over...but going to Toronto...in the same country, and hundreds of miles closer is $850!!!!!!!! ... maybe it'd be cheaper to fly to London and down to Boston at this rate.

wouldn't it be cheaper to drive to Seattle and fly from there?

I can fly to Bangkok for a lot cheaper than I can fly to Perth - which is good, because there are far fewer neo-Nazis and South Africans in Bangkok - and far more talented bar girls who perform with ping-pong balls - hey! let's have a live Songfight in Bangkok!

In particular, do not count on there being any sub-events other than "live fight at end" and "play your set." If time permits, it is possible to add something else in there, but if time permits, then I would prefer to permit it to put a few extra minutes on to everyone's "play your set" instead.
Well... what about the Sox game? I don't think it would take much additional effort on your part to secure reservations at a restaurant for each night, either, even if you were unwilling/unable to offer your house for an afterparty as FB/Moboid did last year. How cold does it get to be in August? Maybe we could do something outside the last night.

Oh, by "sub-events" I meant things happening during the show; all that other stuff is fine because it doesn't take away from stage time.

New England weather is famously unpredictable but probably not colder than jeans-and-sweater at night, with a good chance of shorts-and-tee-shirt being plenty.

I already know that I can't offer my own home for much, unless I move, because I live too far away out in the suburbs. I will come up with something, though.

it might not hurt to try to find a flight to orlando with a layover in Boston. It's slightly tricky getting your bags off the plane in Boston..but it can be done...I've done it before. Flights to Orlando are generally cheaper. Eh, it might be worth a try... it may not.

That's not what I was finding yesterday; more like 350-400.

Where are you looking? I get newsletters from Orbitz that promise sub-$300 (with taxes, etc.) fares all around the country. JetBlue should be pretty good too, but you have to check them seperately, since they're not on Orbitz.

be careful with orbitz

a layover from 8:00 to 9:00 may actually be a 13 hour one.

AND , if you...for some reason can't print out your boarding pass / ticket because of the whole 'next day' thing... you'll end up sleeping outside of the terminal...which, from experience, isa no good.

Yah, they show some solutions like that because they're usually a lot cheaper, and, you never know, someone might want that. It is also an excellent deal if you are travelling from Seattle to Boston but have a mistress who lives at O'Hare.

If a layover is more than a few hours or so there will be a big red "long layover" warning- same with really short layovers (usually less than about 40 minutes but depends on what airport, terminal, airline, and a whole bunch of other factors that, amazingly enough, people get paid to figure out). That is, a really short layover will have a similar warning but with different actual words. They don't call it a "long layover." Still in red letters though. Keep an eye on time zone changes too.

I am happy to recommend orbitz because, having worked on the code that finds flights for them (through a contractor), I can say with pretty good confidence that it's way way more sophisticated than anything else out there. Even so, your best bet is to check multiple major travel web-sites, because they all have special deals with different airlines and you never know who will have the secret agreement that takes you from your home town to mine for cheap. Also see if anyone like Southwest (who aren't listed anywhere except their own website) runs in your market because they have ridiculous prices -- they're generally who I fly with.

The other thing about Orbitz is that they do everything they can to trick you into signing up for an "entertainment service" subscription which costs $10/month for the privilege of having your credit card charged $10/month, which is apparently very entertaining.

I use cheaptickets.com, myself.

Oh, and I will do everything I can to make it this year. I might or might not still be living in NYC at the time (I'm trying to find a job in San Francisco where the work is more interesting and the people are less assholey) but SFLive is the highlight of my pathetic year, so, yeah. Assuming I can make it I'm willing to play rhythm guitar, synths, bass, drums, or bizarre alternate-reality forms of instruments which exist only in the imagination for people, provided time to practice beforehand.

Yikes. What's with all the New york bashing? I'll be the first to admit the cons but there are some pros too.

Back on topic, I just realized that I was confusing the dates SF LA & SF Boston. I kept saying "damnit, SF Boston would have to be around the time of my business trip". Now I realize, it's SF LA that is. So I'm considering making the trip but I have no idea what I'd put into a set. When it comes to SF entries, I haven't exactly always put my best foot forward.

Has it always been a rule to do only SF songs? (Though, I do recall hearing Bro Mac blaring through "Start a Riot" at one of these)

that'd be awesome. i feel the same way about my own SF entries -- maybe we could arrange a "silent e" set, and split the time?

regarding the rule -- i know that at least last year it was a requirement that all the songs be from songfight -- either your own or somebody else's. not sure how flexible that'd be though, regarding sidefights and whatnot.

Hey Niv,

BroMac played Let's Start a Riot at one of our San Francisco shows. It brought the house down and may have therefore been requested at SF Live Austin, but I don't remember. I think that mostly you should play SF material, but well known sidefight material could also apply.

Ken
Ken's Super Duper Band 'n Stuff - Berkeley Social Scene - Tiny Robots - Seamus Collective - Semolina Pilchards - Cutie Pies - Explino! - Bravo Bros. - 2 from 14 - and more!

i would just like to remind everyone that Ken eats kittens - blue lang

Force yourself to write and record at least 2 SF songs a month, up until the the show. Many of them will be good. An old Korean woman told me this as she made me soup.

So... I am confirming my participation in Songfight Boston!!!

I think it's safe to say, I will gladly drum, play bass, guitar, sing, clap, jump, smoke, drink or display flashcards for whomever. I don't know how much time is alotted to performers... I've got this fantasy that I might be able to do a set if possible? However... I'm officially throwing my hat in the ring... so let me know if ya want to jam...

also, any Boston locals know where we can jam at? Like a jam wharehouse or something? I'd love to just have a random jam night/day if possible (ya know, hang out, just improvise, switch around, goof off) ...that would be so cool... anyway... I'm pretty stoked, and so is Dana, who will be accompanying me on this journey..... yeah!!!!

I'm in with ya Leaf, for sure! I too would gladly play guitar, percussion (shaker) or sing for anyone. Hopefully TT can show, and a redcar set can happen.

yay!
