This may be the right thread, it might not... so what?

Ten years ago. That's when I first tried Songfight. Staying up until 4 am and going to work at 6 am; thinking "this is the thing!! this will be the ticket to..." (what, more "audience"??? lol... I had no idea).

Better shit happened anyway. I re-connected with two former bandmates here(different bands from my teen years) back home in Ontario who I hadn't seen in ... ten years by then? Both drawn to Songfight for their own reasons. That was pre-facebook, so it seemed like this awesome magical moment... I'm thousands of km's away so for all I knew I'd NEVER see those guys again. Of course now the world is so small we take our ability to communicate directly and instantly for granted, but damn, that was SOO fucking cool. Then we all worked together on stuff??!!! WOW. That's half of gert right there.. and I got to "gert". For a brief time we were an "online" band. We hung out on skype. We got drunk together on skype. I am not an alcoholic. And I got exposed to... gezuz, a 'world' of musicpeople with different views and etc etc. You all know what I'm talking about (he assumes).

I got put on the PC recording path by songfighters, mostly by TheHipCola (Rob Cosh) cause my sound sucked..lol...yes, I too bought a roland VSR and like an idiot I bought the rack mount one. That thing is a PAIN IN THE ASS to use.
Starting learning how much I didn't know about recording, songwriting etc... and then it was like CRacKmuciCAINEfight!!! Holy.

But, eventually, I couldn't do it anymore. I wasn't growing any more (here I mean) ,I had real life things to take care of and my attention wandered on... etc etc. I actually had to bargain with myself to stop posting. LOL. hilarious.

I still think about it though (songfighting, I'm obviously posting.. heh).

It's one of those things in life you can choose to do, and when you do, it changes you (again, songfight....and yes, I'm responding to potential sarcasm ahead of time. I am writing to musicians who post on message boards after all) . Possibly melodramatic but what do I fuckin care...lol.. that's what I think about it! Super awesome that there are still people 'playing the songfight game', developing and sharing their ideas while trying to meet the challenges that are inherent in this whole concept! Awesome. I got thinking about it today because I got to reunite with some band mates from... 15 years ago... we had a reunion weekend, recorded, wrote songs, and I just wrote the singer and told him "dude you're getting songfighted" cause we imposed a theme on him and I'm trying to give a deadline...lol... he's having a hard time (not really) with it.. "dude, no one has ever said, write this theme for me... it' weird"... lol.

So, update here. A few years ago I started building my "dream" home studio. I have had the jam room done for I think 2 years now? ... all my wiring and venting, framing, etc and all that, but I still need to do the drywall /paint/floor in the control room. I'm using it; (it's studs and insulation... lol) but this winter I finally am able to finish the last room.. what an odyssey.

The jam room is fairly sound proof. I can have a band playing 120 db inside, and outside you can not hear any high end, it seems to me (guessing here) that stuff below 80 htz is getting out (as all you can here is deep low end kick and bass amp tones, muffled, distant sounding).After 15 feet, I can't hear anything. My kids can, but they aren't as deaf as me. Even still, as they walk away they also "lose" it. My goal was to have a room whee I would be able to play drums or rock music at any time, and have a decent enough sound in the room that recording drums decently was possible without a gazzilion eq's, compressors, effects and all that jazz. A room made for home studio recording!

(Oh, We play that loud sometimes cause we're drunk and deaf by the way, and I am a drummer.... lol , probably too loud of a drummer heh. ) anyway, I spent WAY too much money (and still am) and two years trying to figure out the "right way" before I even built anything... ( did green glue, double sill plate walls, double 5/8's drywall, totally decoupled "leaf"s, roxul, etc etc, basically studied the John Sayer's recording studio website) and holy crap, it was expensive, but you can only hear some bass guitar and kick drum, and from about 15 feet from the building (it's a detached, renovated garage). If you are inside any of the houses, you can't hear anything, even with four of five players drunkenly (not always, but it happens) screaming away... so I can play when ever I want now, something I used to have years ago but lost when I moved into town and a subdivision. it was worth it. I spend time in here every day... it's my haven.

So, long roll call long, just wanted to update for the relative few that might be interested, say hi, and say keep fightin! It's a unique thing, and it was done here first!!



Yes. I still love ellipses, and my only concept of message board etiquette is that apparently this exists... so hopefully I haven't shit all over it saying hi... !

Well, I read it and found it interesting and I am jealous of the studio although thankful for the crammed room that I have now. But yeah, hopefully there's some more music coming from up Canadia way soon.
