I meant for my user name to be Luigi but my ipad changed it to Lungi behind my back! So I guess I'm forever lungi.
Some reviews, hope to do more.

Worldly Self-Assurance: A lot to like, clean tight sound. Got my vote. Thought the extra voices and low harmony in the chorus took away from the song. Loved the different parts of the verse.

berkeleysocialscene: Got my vote because of the music. I liked the sound of the voice but I thought the vocal phrasing was way too much with the music.

Jim Tyrrell: Disclaimer. I know Jim personally. I have heard him many times live and always enjoy him. Its hard to be critical not because I don't want to hurt his feelings but because I have heard him enough so that I get what he's doing and his individuality. Yes he got my vote. The worst thing I can say is that I didn't like the tone of the acoustic strumming guitar.

Glennney: Got my vote . I liked the Zappa groove. Reminded me of when my brother took home a Zappa album . At first i thought what the heck is this, and then I couldn't stop listening to it.

Hey Ken, your kick is sounding good in this mix. Amazing how a little tight reverb fattens up the thud. Plus some batter slap to pronounce it real good.
But dude, put some hard left/right pan on the OH. Get those symbols/crashes off to the sides. I like the kick, snare and even the hat running around the center, but your kit would sound more realistic a bit wider in the higher frequencies. Of course that's just "an" opinion. But I think you'd like it if you'd try it. Cool song, by the way.

Hey,

I only have three mics on the drums: Kick, snare, OH. There are no stereo overheads to pan. It is old school and since we usually track as a group, helps avoid phase problems. Also, I'm kind of lazy...

Glad you liked the drum mix this week. It was a little easier to add some effects because everything was recorded separately, so no bleed. Usually BSS tracks as a group so you get at least a little bleed on all the tracks. I did try a few new things on the mix as well, new VSTs and such, which I think made a big difference. Glad you noticed, and I appreciate the comment.

I was pretty sure that was the reason. But you can still get it panned out to match the hard left/right guitars more.
If I was handed your tracks and was told "this is what you get, make the best of it". (not saying they are bad, because they are actually pretty damn good)
1. I'd use the single OH mic as my primary kit track.
2. I'd have the kick and snare tracks off and EQ, widen and mix the OH as if that was my only drum track for the song.
3. After I get everything out of it, I'd then mix in the kick mic as a spot and center to get the punch out of the kick to make up for it's thin sound from the OH track.
4. Then do the same to the snare to fatten it up and give it center snap.
The key is widening the OH with the guitar tracks until they sound like they are the same width. Right now, BSS mixes have the guitars all by them selves on the far right and left and although sounding great, they sound lonely. The band is having a great time in the middle rocking out and the poor guitars have been quarantined to a life of "forever alone". ....poor guitars, they just want to be loved. :(

BUT! BUT! If I had the opportunity to get one more OH mic on your kit and you hummed and hawed about being lazy, I'd say do the old school John Bonham method. We did this back in the day for live recording and it works great!
1. Do your 3 mic set up as usual with the OH mic about 4 feet above the snare.
2. NOW put a 4th mic next to the floor tom high enough above the rim to get the tom head in the mic wave pattern (about 5 or 6 inches depending on mic) and pointing straight across pointing at the snare.
3. Here is the only part that requires you to not be a big baby. The OH mic and the side tom mic have to be the exact distance from the center of the snare to avoid phase issues. That's it! If the OH mic grill is 36" above the center of the snare, then the tom side mic grill needs to be 36" from the center of the snare. Use a mic cable to measure, you have one right there for frig sake! They just need to be the same distance. It doesn't matter if it's 3 feet, 4 feet, etc. But the closer to the kit, the less ambient sound they pick up in live performing.
4. Just like in the 3 mic method, use the stereo OH mics as the primary kit mix and use the kick and snare mics to center punch and snap.

There is a name for this method, I just know it's the Jon Bonham method, because all we had were rock mags in the day to learn from, lol. But it works REALLY great for stereo OH mixing without phase issues and without picking up the other instruments much, especially if you use dynamic mics.

Anyway, there's my coffee rant for the day. You may already do this on non lazy days and I'm preaching to the choir.
...you should drink coffee and use a 4th mic. :D

Berkeley Social Scene - Here's your 7/4 whoever requested it last week. It was fun working with Glennny. I like the Pink Floyd-iness of this song.

Flvxxvm Florvm - Fun upbeat song. Great guitar solo. I like the edginess of the vocals as well.

Glennny - Fades in like a classic Zip Line track! So much going on in this song, excellent full throttle guitar playing. Your vocal harmonies are good this week.

Hillbilly - I like the campfire vibe of this track. Welcome back!

Inflatable Vegetables - You know I like the synthrock, so this track is right up my alley. Catchy and very fun to listen to.

Jeebas Jones - Funky! You do a good job of making this rhythm your own. I think all the percussion is great.

Jim Tyrell - The wide vocals are cool. It gives them a nice sheen. Lovely vocal harmonies on the chorus.

Ken's SBDnS - This song came to me pretty close to the deadline. I had to use drum, bass, and organ VSTis, a couple of direct guitars, and the vocal tracks. Came out pretty good for last minute I think.

Lou Porrazzo - What a fun song! Great synth solo.

Majicat - Excellent ballad. This doesn't need any bells and whistles, you nail it with just the basics.

Nick Soma - Yeah, Rock and Roll!!! Horn solo is cool, why didn't you use more horns throughout the song?

Paco del Stinko - Always reliable awesomeness from PdS! So much good stuff here. Fun lyrics and vocals harmonies. Great guitar playing!

Schlimminy Cricket - Unexpected mix of instruments. It all works though. Very cool song!

Toby Roktot - Did you record this live? Very cool. Sounds really good.

Worldly Self Assurance - Always great to hear Frisbee and Pedro singing together! Another WSA classic is born!

Everyone did a great job this week. Votes for everyone! Keep up the good work!!!

Berkely Social Scene: great drums however you recorded them, love the vibe that the keyboards lends this. not sure how I feel about the distorted power chords that come in around 0:51, it's a bit harsh for this mellow song, but OTOH its kinda buried so it doesn't matter much... the guitar solo at 2:45 is excellent though.

Flvxxvm Florvm: (MY SONG) The artistic goal was to evoke a 60s garage band, think the "Nuggets" boxed set. Probably recorded about 1966 by a band from some backwater town in Alabama or something, the members of which later went on to take part in the southern rock movement. The lyrics were inspired by a dream I had the night before writing them.

Glenny: as I'm used to hearing from you, interesting guitar work. Treads the line between alternative and prog rock.

Hillbilly: sounds like something performed around a hobo campfire, which I assume was the intention, and if so it succeeds nicely.

Inflatable Vegetables: damn, what fun. I wish the vocals could be more spastic, more Mark Mothersbaugh like. The keyboard is perfect.

Jeebas Jones: arrangement is centered around voice and acoustic guitar, the bass and drums don't add much to it. Maybe some electric guitar or another instrument to flesh it out.

Jim Tyrell: the acoustic sounds like you just plugged straight in.. I prefer a mic'd sound even if it results in less clarity. The overall arrangement is good though, I love how the keyboards contribute.

Ken's Super Duper Band n Stuff: this is about the speed and level of sadness that I was originally intending to write, so I'm glad I decided to speed mine up since yours is way better than mine would have been.

Lou Porrazzo: this is genuinely danceable. Was not expecting that particular synth sound, quite a surprise. Was expecting more like a horn section or something.. but the surprise adds to the fun.

Majicat: guy and guitar, very emotional. Sounds genuinely pained.

More reviews later. Not disclosing who I vote for.

Nick Soma: damn, its like this 80's rock thing when suddenly the whole brass section from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" joins in for the solo. I think you've only joined the site while I was gone... I'm putting you on my list of ones to watch around here.

Paco: Damn that rhthym guitar is groovy and the harmony vocals are nice. The lead guitar is good but almost like you called yourself up at the last minute and said, "Hey self, come into the studio and play a solo for my song", so yourself came in and asked what it should sound like, and you answered "just burn!" (note this is also an accurate description of MY recording process..)

Schlimminy Cricket: fun drums, good vocal sound. Walking dead themed lyrics just in time for Halloween. Nice synth.

Toby Roktot: holy shit, more honest guy-and-guitar. Liveness reminds me of SongFight Live!

Worldly Self-Assurance: last in alphabetical order, not last in quality! (though every song in this fight is pretty good) Damn, some good guitar on this. I forgot who all is in this band.

toby roktot— Live? Quel intéressant. Vocals have notes of Randy Newman. Harmonica points.
The Worldly Self Assurance— Good, lovable 90's vibe. The solo guitar is a bit Sonic-the-Hedgehog-esque. Frisbee's vocals always melt my heart.
Paco Del Stinko— Sort of a more rock Oingo Boingo thing going here. I adore the backing vocals. Guitar solos bore me generally, and this one is no exception, unfortunately, because I like the rest.
Nick Soma— I might as well just put it out there that I'm not what you'd call a rock-n-roll guy, generally. I was unconvinced for a bit, but the chorus got me into it, and the horns won me over entirely. Parts of it remind me of Pinkerton-era Weezer, which is the best Weezer.
Ken's Super Duper Band 'n Stuff— Guitars a touch loud for me. Organ is very welcome in what has so far been a very guitarrish fight.
Flvxxvm Florvm— Great energy. Messy in a nice way. I like how the vocal distorts a bit.
Lou Porrazzo— How nice to know what to expect upfront. Very old-fashioned song. Sweet harmonies.
glennny— Kind of all over the place at the start. Maybe that's the point, given the lyrics. I'm losing the melody right and left on this one. Pretty tough for me to listen to.
Berkely Social Scene— My but that's an unusual beat. I actually kind of like it. Clemency? Uh... 'kay.
Jim Tyrell— Love that chord progression. Wondering when a change is going to kick in though. Ah, the bridge. That's better. Flute? Can't tell if I like that or not.
Majicat— Rhythmically a little iffy. Lo-fi feel is charming.
Jeebas Jones— Cowbell- yes. Cool sound, but the rhythm of the words has me thinking Ghostbusters. I love the way the vocals are treated, though. They sound great.
inflatable vegetables— Made-for-TV movie soundtrack kind of sound. Love that.
hillbilly— I know I should not have laughed when the song opened with "a lot of my friends died in Vietnam," but it happened. I am so sorry. My postmodern hipster upbringing renders me incapable of processing sincerity of this type.
Schlimminy (me)— Completely changed the tone of this song because I fell in love with the drum loop and positively had to use it. Played the song in the wrong key, thus falsetto vocals. I think it's a fun change of pace though. I like the almost 60's pop feel that kind of happened here.

More reviews...Things I liked

Pako Del Stinko: Tasty notes on that guitar in the background.I love a tune with melody layers.

Schlimminy Cricket: Drumbeat contrasted favorably with the vocals

Nick Soma: Liked the fresh youthful feel to this song.

Toby Roktot: Nice Mark Knopfler channeling.

Majicat: Diamond in the ruff. Good melody and to me melody is king. I could imagine all the other instruments in the background. Hope you keep on developing this song.

Some quick reviews, better late than never:

Majicat: This reminds me of some of my earliest efforts at writing and recording. There’s a purity to this that I like. Keep making music.

Toby Roktot: Had me smiling in the first three seconds. Nice little tune, but things get a little out of control around the 2-minute mark. Enjoyed the harmonica.

Lou Porrazzo: Very odd intro followed by a strangely mesmerizing tune. That vocal delivery in the chorus (?) is addictive. I am filing this track under strange but true.

The WSA: I am in love with this song. It started as Pete’s guitar-based structure. Ken added drums. I played bass and some acoustic guitar. Pete sang the brilliant chorus. Frisbee sang those amazing verses. Glen added some harmonies and a bunch of gorgeous e-bow and guitar leads. If this song doesn’t win the fight, I'll demand a recount.

BSS: Tricky timing from these tactful tunesters. Cool groove. Really like the melodic/harmonic action of the chorus, but the word “clemency” is a bit ugly and probably unnecessary. Love the bass tone. How was it recorded?

Jim Tyrrell: I can never accept this cruise ship guitar tone, but it seems a lot less important in this instance, because I just love the chord progression and melody. Really pretty. Very nice work.

Flxxvm Florvm: You’re a great guitar player. Cool! I wish I could play lead guitar. The other elements of the track fall pretty flat for me, unfortunately.

Hillbilly: OK, fuck metaphor, screw allusion, and piss on double entendre: the king of look-you-in-the-eye-and-kick-you-in-the-heart-songwriting has been crowned. As we look up, grimacing, trying to understand why hillbilly has done this to us, he’s already walking away.

Inflatable Vegetables: As always, witty, catchy, well-played and fun to listen to. Are you recording with a potato or are you subverting modern recording equipment in some way to achieve this sonic quality?

Jeebas Jones: This is pretty well executed but I have a genre bias working against whatever this type of music is called. I like your voice.

Paco: Long time, brother! Fantastic playing, singing and recording as always. Love the guitar solo. Is that a wah pedal of some kind? Sounds amazing.

Schlimminy Cricket: This is kind of interesting. It wasn't immediately up my alley, but it grew on me over the course of two minutes. Some nice words in this.

Nick Soma: Pretty sweet. I turned this up. Lots of good stuff here. Good energy, nice guitar crunch, some nice vocal parts and a really good performance overall. I dig it. Foibles? Not sure about that murky-sounding horn part and the hi-hat sounds errant in spots.

Ken’s SDBAS: This is nicely put together, but it plods a bit. I feel it would benefit from more dynamic range: instruments joining and leaving the mix, more variety in the vocal phrasing, maybe a melodic lead instrument. Just something to break up the straight march a bit.

Glennny: I was expecting to hear this track, because it originally almost became a WSA tune. There were just too many notes for that band to handle. Actually, Glen composed much of our entry for the Phyllis fight, and even it had me paralyzed at first with all of its minor chord complexity. Honestly, anything beyond three major chords makes me a bit uncomfortable. But I rose to the occasion and ended up really enjoying our Phyllis track. In fact, it was an opportunity for personal growth. OK, so back to the matter at hand. I don’t think I ever could have come up with a vocal part for this monster, and I’m impressed, Glen, that you were able to do it and it actually sounds good! Your vocals are sounding great on this, and all the noodly guitar bits are hanging together well. Progtastic. Well done.

Melvin: Yes. You caught me. I use a potato. Profile has been updated.
Others - thanks for your reviews. I'll try to post some later today.

lost the ones i did earlier. Get to. Try again.

bss 7/4 felt unnatral and lurching at first, but i staryed to enjoy it about halfway thru. I like chorus in spite of clemency.
Glennny definitely chaos in my head. I especially like the harmony vox at 2:22
ken i liked this one a lot. I felt there was something missing. Maybe some rests, or some little instrument fills?
wsa great guitars. I Had to look up the different types of marine garbage.

nick loved the energy of this one, so was surprised with your horn choices. Maybe a more aggressive horn part would have fit the song better?
paco you write such quirky lurking threatening songs, bUt still underlined with humor. Love your guitar riffs and solo.
jim t gentle ive been driving too long. Really liked the chord progression.

lou p i really wanted to like this, but something wasn't right, and I'm not good enough to figure it out. Maybe it's Eq?
toby r I had a note about vox distortion, but I don't hear it without headphones. Like the harmonica, and i want to read your lyrics again. Yeah.
hillbilly love your fingerpicking. End of song now there's no place left for me. Powerful.
jeebus j liked the cowbell, and bass. Too much the same riff at the beginning.
majicat one thing to watch maybe is that at one point you had strong strum soft strum thing going, and you were doing same thing with your voice.
flvxxvm f liked the sixties vibe and guitar solos.
