i think rounding up 4 cd players, and finding a way to start them all simultaneously would be a bit of a pain.

digitize each CD as a single WAV file, import them into your mixing software as seperate tracks, and press play.

You're assuming this band has any common sense.... perhaps they have this notion that this is somehow artistic?

Yep.

The difficulty of synching up four cd players at once, along with the fact that you'll almost never do it quite right or the same as before, is fully expected and intentional. The music is deliberately written to sort of "wobble" around itself, to not feel quite right sometimes.

Ripping all the cds to a computer and mixing the songs together is a common solution used to hear it all at once, but that sort of defeats a large point of the album. I'm still tempted to do it myself, just so I can listen to the complete songs in the car, but I'm at least going to wait until I've had the chance to gather some friends together (with their cd players) for a grand 4-cd listening.

No, all I'm assuming is that they put out 4 cds on purpose.

Their intention was to have 4 cds worth of music designed to be played simulatenously.

One reason that has already been stated, is that cd players don't all play at exactly the same speed, so each CD gets a little off from each other.

There is the artistic aspect that you have noted, that is, to make people have to work to play the music. I haven't heard of anyone who has played it without having to borrow a cd player or two. It becomes an event, rather than just an album. If you tell the person why you want their cd player, they may want to be involved in the listening. Stone soup.

And then there is also the remix aspect, which flows out of the artistic aspect. Since it is difficult (or at least not easy) to get 4 cd players at the same time, necessity sometimes dictates that not all of the 4 cds get played at the same time. There are 15 different permutations for listening to the some or all of the cds at the same time.

The music's really cool. I haven't heard all 4 at once yet, but I've listened all the way through with cds (1 and 2) and (3 and 4). 1 and 2 was better, I thought. The music is about what you'd expect to hear if the Flaming Lips went crazy-experimental (much moreso than usual) for an album. And still good.

So can I reccommend to those of you who don't know them, Death From Above 1979? One singing drummer, one bass player. Make a sound like a thousand angels vomiting into your ears.

A little bit Girls vs Boys, a little bit Morphine, if they had played three times as fast and replaced their saxophonist with the guitarist from Slipknot. really, meaty stuff. And there's only two of them. Sweet and Jesus put together!

(also loving 'Slits - Live at the Gibus Club' - not great value: 30 minute live CD from 1979, recorded through mixing desk I think, including two songs played twice and about 5-6 minutes of inter-song banter, but the music is the best as always, Palmolive drums, and Ari-Up at one point exhorts a bouncer to 'go to the bogs and have a wank'. Which is worth the £12.99 cover price alone.)

I thought I'd be able to post that this kicks ass. The first song I heard was awesome: ballsy and superdriven. However, 4 songs in and I'm disappointed. The world does NOT need a heavy version of Presidents of the USA. Same setup, drums and bass only, with the occasional bit of synthesizer. Lots heavier. And after 4 songs, somehow more boringer.

It's a novelty until your brain reaches back through the catalogue to make the comparisson with PotUSA, and then you see it for what it is. Pretty unimaginative.

This tape has been in my car's cassette deck since Friday. I found it in a box of old stuff under the cellar stairs. It's a concert recording, and it makes me wish I'd been there.

Gary Numan is AWESOME. Well, some of his stuff, some is really really bad. But there's lots of greatness in his catalogue.

I highly recommend reading his book, "Praying To The Aliens"..great insight into Numan and his career.
