Circle of Titles V
Hi everyone! We're near the end of Nur Ein, so that means it's time for another round of Circle of Titles!!!!!
This is our fifth time around with this sidefight, so I figure it's time to shake things up a bit. In the past, participants have asked to have multiple titles to choose from, and I've never done it that way before. Let's try out multiple titles this year!
Here are the rules (there are some changes from last year to account for the multiple titles):
1.) Everyone who wants in announces their intention to participate. (Or not; if you want to surprise us, that's cool with me)
2.) Each participant thinks up two titles and submits them to me.
2a.) Please do not make (either of) your titles purposely nonsensical or difficult for the recipient.
3.) I randomize stuff up so that each person gets someone else's titles, and send those back.
4.) Each person records a song for one of the two titles they get.
5.) At the end, the songs will be posted, along with the revelation of who submitted what title.
6.) Titles are then up for grabs for whoever wants extra credit. Also, there will be an opportunity to for others to step up and record songs for the "stiffees."
7.) For the record, I'll be participating, too. Yes, that's a little unfair. Get over it.
Here's my thinking for this year's schedule: Get the titles to me within ten days (June 11, one minute prior to midnight).
I'll randomize the titles and assign them in the first couple of days after I get them, and they'll be due on Sunday, June 28 (one minute prior to midnight).

Glad to have you guys in! Jast, you are definitely definitely on my list this time. Didn't want to repeat last year's gaffe.

Re: Circle of Titles V
I think I can do this, for once. Nice run-up to 50/90. However can we be a little more specific with "purposely nonsensical or difficult for the recipient"? In other words, count me in, with the proviso I might count myself out suddenly before the deadline ...

Re: Circle of Titles V
I think the basic idea is that it's kind of annoying to get a title chosen pretty much only for making the writer's life difficult, or forcing them into a very narrow corner.j$ wrote:I think I can do this, for once. Nice run-up to 50/90. However can we be a little more specific with "purposely nonsensical or difficult for the recipient"?
Examples (according to me) from past CoTs:
- Nickelback is my favorite band ever (CoT1)
- We Degender Bawdily. Ha ha! (CoT1)
- Why Yes, I DO Have A Pistol In My Pocket, But That Does Not Necessarily Mean That I Am Still Not Pleased To See You (CoT2)
- I'm Fixin to Butter Your Biscuit (CoT4 -- this one is kind okay but still not a title I'd enjoy having to write to)
Side note, personally I prefer titles that aren't entire sentences... that way the writer gets more freedom to go different directions but you can still get rather creative.

Back in Circle of Titles 1, Heuristics Inc. got a title he hated. It was submitted by "Apodan," who turned out to be a pseudonym for The Weakest Suit. If you ask me, HInc made some lemonade out of those lemons and turned in a pretty good song. But he sat out CoT2 and expressed some reluctance about trying again for CoT3. Mike Lamb, who ran the contest that year in my place (thanks again, Mike!) decided to add that rule in response to HInc's concerns. Since the measure of "purposely nonsensical or difficult for the recipient" is so subjective, the rule isn't really enforceable, it's just there to remind you that, hey, this game is a lot more fun if you don't set your assignee up for failure.
If someone submits a title that makes me think they're not playing in good faith, I will politely ask them to change it. My threshold for this is quite high (none of the above listed titles would have triggered it, though "We Degender Bawdily. Ha ha!" comes closest).
One other thing that I keep forgetting to put in the main "Rules" post... In the unlikely event that two participants submit identical titles, both will be asked to change. Yes, this happened once.

Bump. We've got nine participating so far, and they are listed as follows. If there is an asterisk by your name, it means I haven't yet received a pair of titles from you. Signups are still open for two more days, so let me know if you wanna join the fun!

Re: Circle of Titles V
Man, this deadline snuck by me. I'm still waiting on titles from two people, and as soon as I get those, I'll send everyone their assignments.
And anyone else who wants to sneak in before then, feel free. Just PM me two titles.
BTW, the titles I have so far are really good.

Re: Circle of Titles V
All righty! I've decided which of the two titles I'm going to use, and I've got the skeleton of a song with some chorus lyrics. Here's hoping I'm not wearing my influences on my sleeve too badly this time.

Re: Circle of Titles V
I think I know which title I want to do but I have no freaking ideas. I suuuuuuck.
Also I'm going to be on a business trip next week so I might have to get some guest involvement with some SFers in the locality I'll be visiting.

Re: Circle of Titles V
Oh crap, my own deadline snuck up on me.
I'll have the site ready around midweek, but as usual I won't make it public until we've reached a quorum of participants. I don't mind that some folks have already shared theirs, though.

Re: Circle of Titles V
For the first time I'm gonna be late on this, because I've been traveling for the last week and haven't had a chance to record.
