Songfight! Boston August 12-13 (I Know My Rights)

Songfight coffeehouse sounds fine for me. I would still like to play a set at the main show, but if necessary, I'd possibly trade my stage time for an acoustic afternoon set. Or play a shorter set at the big show. Or whatever. We'll see how things work out, I guess.

Great idea, though.

How about we try to secure a venue that will let us play til 2am?

COTFG kicked us out at what, midnight? If we can secure two days at a venue from 8pm til 2am, we'll be like, having to make shit up to fill the time. Also, playing later means we get to laugh more, because JB and Erik will be even drunker by the time the evening is over.

I dislike the idea of shafting a bunch of people with an acoustic set that would likely not get recorded.

We're jumping the gun again, but not as bad as last year, I think. I think Hoblit was in charge of the gear page last time, let's get one of those set up. Since there are more fighters in New England than in Texas, we'll probably have better/more gear to work with. Like, last year there was only one acoustic/electric guitar, and that was Sean's hardback with the heaviest/oldest goddamn strings known to man... so that's as good a topic as venue, although I realize that none of this can really move forward without a house of rock secure.

There are lots of other things that can make the show go smoother. Example: this year, I'll be sure to plan my set so that there aren't redundant/akward musician changes between songs.

Also, since I'm working at a music store (think Guitar Center, but with class), I can get gear basically at manufacturer's cost. If there are any smallish peices of gear you would like for me to purchase for you and bring to Boston, just let me know. Peavey makes a sweet little thing called a Feedback Ferret. You can point a mic directly into a monitor with the gain all the way up, and it'll eliminate all feedback. Pretty leet.

Maybe we could try to find a coffeehouse that has a stage and would let us all congregate there for several hours and the two-night format will be one night at a coffeehouse and one night at a more traditional venue. I think that'd be a good idea because guys like me are not the fanciest or biggest draws but we would come there to perform and rock out and a coffee shop would be more appropriate and fun for performer and listener both. Besides that my set is probably going to be identical to what I played last year. Hmm.

I think the coffehouse idea is a good one, but not if it competes with the main performances. I don't like the idea of a second stage where you have to choose who you want to see. Perhaps it isn't too early to start seeing who intends to attend.

Sober: Perhaps you can bring a box of extra strings/cables/tuners/picks/etc. so that if someone had old strings we can change them out at the show.

Yes, it's probably time for an official website for this gig as well as potential instruments and performers.

A reference point you can send your friends to so they don't have to go diggin' through unfamiliar message boards and what not.

Obviously keeping this thread to for detailed discussion, but as things solidify we'll need to document it for reference.

Anyone up for this task? I'll do it if nobody else wants to. This site certainly does not need frills... just a place to document the solidified details. My hand goes up because I can design it, update it, as well as host it. However, if somebody else wants to do it... please, feel free. I'm a busy man these days.

Coffeehouse is a great idea, but it should be in addition to whatever else, IMO.

The subways stop running around 12:30 or so, which is a limiting factor for a lot of people. 2:00 may be a theoretical maximum, but every place I know will want you off stage by 1:15-1:30 at the latest, so they have time to kick everyone out, clean up, etc.

Austin was 5-10 both days, I am thinking maybe 7-12 this time if we have roughly the same attendance, which leaves a little bit of slack on both ends.

Theoretically Boston clubs can stay open til 2, but most close up before that. Usually last call at 1 or even earlier. The latest I've ever played was at Great Scott in Allston where the bands play til 1:45 at the very latest. Other than that place, I don't know of anywhere around here that has bands any later. For late night action try JJ Foleys in Roxbury. But probably no band there.

Yes, and I was wondering how I was going to get out there after a move. I'm not moving for another year so I'll be traveling from Tampa. I think that pretty much carves it in for me as well. No more uncertainty.

am also looking into how to take a week long vacation, to go hiking/camping all through out New england (Mt. Washington?) and ending up in boston for that weekend.
in the end, i'll be there to see some of you fuckers fuck up your own songs.
