Fun-A-Day 2019 and Jamuary 1

Post by Lunkhead »

It's almost that time! I'm going to make music every day in January as part of "Fun-A-Day" 2019. Fun-A-Day is a challenge a la FAWM/NaNoWriMo/RPM/etc. in which folks make art every day in January. I say "music" rather than "songs" because I'll mostly/entirely make instrumental music. I have a lot of fun new synths and soft synths and other doodads to use this time.

Jonathan Mann has also started a new concurrent and similar challenge "Jamuary" in which folks make a song every day. He's completing 10 years (!!!!) of making a song a day today. It all started with him making a song a day for Fun-A-Day in 2009.

http://jamuary.one/

He's got a mailing list and hashtag and a graphic of daily prompts, and he's planning to blog about making songs every day.

Here's my music for day 2.

Glenn Case is doing Jamuary also and he's making songs WITH lyrics AND vocals even. AND he's live streaming himself making his songs every day too.

I really like the sound of Day 3. And it was cool to hear the contrast to Day 2. You mentioned this last year and it sounds like something I'd enjoy, but I've dedicated January to practicing an instrument every day and it's taking up more of my time/attention/energy than I'd ever imagine. It doesn't help that i'm teaching myself to play the drums and I have a looooong way to go. Okay, enough excuses. Keep up the jams.

I made an actual song tonight, although it's only about 90 seconds long. This one is about drowning/being buried in stuff.

Today's song is another instrumental, it's in 6/8, has drums, bass, acoustic guitar, farfisa, glockenspiel, and electric guitar.

I banged out another instrumental tonight, with a base layer of drums, bass, Wurlitzer, and string pads, with some synth lead on top.

My music for yesterday is the new BSS song for the "Sing of the Times" fight. My music for today is some analog keyboard jamming over some bangin' drum loops.

I quickly wrote and live recorded a song tonight about 'Instant Band Night" before heading out to ... Instant Band Night. IBN is a very Song Fight! esque event in spirit, where anybody can show up, put their name on piece of paper in coffee tins for drums, bass, guitar, vocals, miscellaneous, and art, and instants bands are formed by random drawings. Your instant band has several minutes to prepare "backstage" then go out on stage to rock out. You can do anything you want, jam, play a cover, write a song, or anything. It's super fun.

I managed to make a "full band" song, with lyrics and vocals today! I played bass, keys, and acoustic and electric guitar, and programmed drums. It's a bit corny but I think it has some good stuff in it.

Tonight I managed to get a fairly decent solo white guy approximation of an afro beat groove. It's not terrible, I swear! Erin is very critical of white funkiness and she gave this a pass.

Last night's music was the forthcoming BSS song. Tonight I've crossed the half way point! I made some instrumental electronic music with some analog synth and drums and stuff.

Some Casio-esque bossanova-ish instrumental stuff with keys and drum machine and synth bass and general MIDI percussion.

Friday night I did a quick stream-of-consciousness a cappella song, with lyrics inspired by "A Doom With A View", the Jamuary prompt word "platform", and a bunch of randomly drawn Oblique Strategies cards.

Last night I made a song inspired by seeing a performance of "Celebrity Autobiography" tonight as part of SF Sketchfest. Hilarious people read and enact expertly selected and combined excerpts from real celebrity autobiographies.

Tonight's song is a really goofy song inspired by the goofy name for tonight's moon and an old song by Jonathan Mann about a goofy game called "Bloody Wolf". And it's kinda metal!
