Nur Ein XIV Round Three "Color Me _____"

Post by Niveous »

It's time for the infamous guest round... but with a twist

Submit an original song by May 20th at 12:01 AM (EDT) that fits the following criteria

Title: Color Me _________
Challenge: Sampled Vocal Hook

There is a vast archive of isolated and a cappella vocal tracks available for the taking on the Internet. Your job is to find one or more that you like and use samples from it in your original song. You can chop them, pitch them, edit them as much or as little as you like. Samples can come from famous songs that we've all heard, pilfered from places like YouTube, the Songfight archive, or from obscure field recordings, purloined from public domain sites like archive.org. You can even sample songs from your own back catalog, but all samples must come from pre-existing material. The idea is not to make a cover of the song you're sampling from, but to re-contextualize the sample in your original work. Each judge will decide for themselves how well or how poorly the sample or samples are used in your song, so be creative!

Send your MP3 to nurein.sidefight@gmail.com

Good luck!

A couple of clarification requests, if I may?

* Are we supposed to replace the blank in the title with something of our own choosing? Asking mainly because a friend's band released an album called "_________ is Missing"
* Does the sample have to be a cappella? Or is that just a suggestion? Obviously it has to be vocal, but if any additional sounds are involved and interpolated into the new song then is that OK?

I imagine there will be a lot like this:

I like that one, but it's not because of the Andrew Sisters

Yes, replace the blank with something of your choosing.

No, it just has to be vocal. Other sounds are okay.

Challenge: Sampled Vocal Hook
I hate to be pedantic - perhaps it's intentionally ambiguous - but should it be the vocal hook or a vocal hook? If Bittersweet Symphony had sampled a choir instead of an orchestra, would it have met the challenge?

I just took a first pass at this, and it's hilarious how bad I am at sound mixing. This will be a great round for me :D

Super pedantic. Just use a sample as your hook. The sample has to have vocals. Don't overthink this.

Hey folks,
I know some of you wait patiently at midnight (or whatever time it is in your time zone) for the new songs to go. Just an alert that they'll be posted up a little late. I'll be indulging in watching ridiculous violence and drama. Yes, the WWE. What did you think I was talking g about? Game of... Oh, that's tonight too. Hmmm. Who had the bright idea to put a wrestling PPV at the same time as the culmination of one of the biggest TV shows ever? Someone's getting fired. Okay, so, be warned. Color me late to the party.

Since it probably won't be obvious from listening to the song, I think it's important that I note here that I mixed and submitted our song while wearing this t-shirt.

I’m recording my harmonies in a Menards hat. Because I sampled some 2x4s.

I managed to finish my song just before the deadline, but it was close. It has a long-ass intro and outro, which I tried to shorten, but it ruined the mood. Also, I tried to add a guitar and harmony vocals, yet that also didn't seem to fit the mood. There is only one vocal track (apart from the sampled hook) in the final song, and no guitar except for the solo in the outro.
