SoundCloud limiting free accounts to _15 tracks_!!

Sounds like a lame bait and switch. "Good news! We're bringing support for uploading/downloading lossless files to all accounts! Bad news! It makes no sense but we're limiting free users dramatically as part of this" WTF?

I've already run afoul of their free account limit by doing "Fun a day" in January for a few years. I've set up so far three accounts in order to keep having space without paying. That's going to get a lot more annoying if each account can only upload 15 tracks. And their subscription options are IMHO kinda expensive for the service.

I don't understand all the blockchain and token stuff they talk about. Some people in that reddit comment thread seem angry about it. How does it work? Do you have concerns about that?

I stopped using Soundcloud to upload my random one-off stuff a couple of years back because I ran out of space and didn't want to keep creating new accounts/deleting older content. (And they were also on the verge of bankruptcy and seemed unstable at that point.)

I just delete old shit that doesn't get any listens. I've kept a couple of songs with comments that I enjoy, but honestly, I only ever seem them if I run out of space.

I just pay for SoundCloud Pro. I agree it's overpriced but, meh, I can't be bothered to figure out a better self-hosting option.

I keep hoping someone will build some sort of self-hostable SoundCloud-alike which has a nice playlist-embedding widget but I might just have to do it myself.

Meanwhile you could always make a "preview" album on BandCamp and use that (and then you can flip the switch when it's done so people can download it, maybe even sending you some money in the process).

disco is a good service from what I hear. Might be a bit pricey. Dunnae. I signed up for the free trial and didn't use it one time. I just don't have need for it. But I think it depends on what you need it for. If you're doing an album release and need preview tracks etc., soundcloud is probably better. If you just need a public link to share things with (say, submitting to a project) then disco is much, much better.

Looks like Audius is yet another libertarian, freeze-peach, fuck-the-planet-there’s-commerce-to-be-had bullshit cryptocurrency thing with a music-oriented wrapper around it.

“You can never be deplatformed” is code for “racists and nazis welcome.”

Fuck that entirely.

Ah, fuck, buried in the outrage over losing a free service is the unstated fact that Pro is going away too. THAT is a bait-and-switch, actually.

No wonder they’ve been so heavily pushing “pro unlimited,” which costs more than I’m willing to spend for this.

Guess I do need to care after all. Fuck.

https://audiomack.com/ looks kinda interesting as a SoundCloud alternative, although I've not dug very deep into the website yet.

A friend of mine who runs a studio has spoken positively about https://bounceboss.co.uk/ which is a slightly different feature set, more of a "place to upload mixes to share with collaborators" than for releasing music to the world (again, I haven't dug too deep) but that also may be useful for SF types so worth a look?

Yeah there's lots of collab platforms out there. I've played a bit with Splice which is kind of interesting, and like it'll even automatically handle cross-DAW compatibility somewhat which is pretty cool (although I haven't tried that part of it).

Also for sharing stems/seeds/loops, don't forget ccMixter.

Okay so: Funkwhale looks great. It's self-hostable, federated/decentralized, and has an embed widget. Seems like it'd be easy enough for some of us to pool our resources and run an instance for the Song Fight! community.

Plus you can use it for getting your own music library everywhere, which might just finally kill iTunes for me.

This looks interesting to me, and would gladly join a pod hosted by Songfight. I've got plenty of albums on my computer I could share. Not sure how this replaces soudcloud though...

It replaces SoundCloud by doing all the things SoundCloud does, in addition to other things.

Looks like Soundcloud are backing down, at least for the moment on their proposed track limit: https://blog.soundcloud.com/2019/12/05/ ... on-monday/

Nothing in there about the Pro level still existing between Free and Pro Unlimited, though.

Yeah, that bit still has me annoyed. $5/month for Pro is reasonable. Having to pay more than twice as much for the same thing, not so much.

What’s your perceived advantages to soundcloud? The nice UI?
I’m wondering if I could just enhance the Nur Ein code for songfighters here.

For me, SoundCloud is a place that

* will host and stream tracks in a bulletproof way for free
* makes it easy for me to upload tracks quickly
* people are familiar with, so they know what to expect-- the song I'm trying to make them listen to is enough of an unknown already

I don't find their organization tools very intuitive or easy to navigate. But whatevs.

For me the nice thing about SoundCloud is that it has an embeddable widget that does a nice job of presenting the song/playlist and is also nice enough to automatically pause other embedded SoundCloud widgets on the same page. It probably wouldn’t take that much to implement something else like it but sc has the advantage that non-nerds can work it.

I wound up breaking down and paying the $$$ for SoundCloud "Pro" during Jamuary. Ugh.

In other SoundCloud news:

"SiriusXM Invests $75MM in SoundCloud"

https://techcrunch.com/2020/02/11/music ... -siriusxm/

SXM basically bought two board seats for $75MM. They did something similar with Pandora a while back. So ... I wonder where that's going to lead...
