Original Flava Coverfight - COVID-19 Special Edition

Post by Mike Lamb »

As has been discussed on the GOM thread, we're gonna keep the boredom momentum rolling for all who wish to participate in different avenues of SF! To that end, I'm opening up an Original Flava coverfight. For those who are unfamiliar, an Original Flava Coverfight is where Songfighters cover the songs of their fellow Songfighters. The way this works is that folks post here that they're "in." After some period of time, the covermaster (me) will covertly message you with the randomly selected name of someone else who signed up. It's then up to you to pick which of that person's songs you want to put your own unique spin on.

In order to participate in this, you will need to have at least one song, preferably more, present in your artist archive. It's fine to use any artist/band you've materially participated in, for example: for myself, I would let the covermaster know that I'm "in" and the participant who receives my name could use tracks from any of the bands I've been significantly involved with -- Mike Lamb, The Nutwalls, Kasper.

I'm a little concerned that this will run into Nur Ein, but I figure we'll just leave that particular issue up to the participants.

Relevant dates:

- signups end by 0900 Sunday April 19th PDT (UTC-7)
- randomized participants PMed out via the board by me as soon as I can after the signup deadline
- songs due by 0900 Sunday 3 May PDT (UTC-7)

The songs!

Caravan Ray for JB - All Tan
Caravan Ray for JB - Systematic Panic
Crumpart for Micah - Zero Gravity
Glennny for Fluffy - Cindy on the Bus
JB for Paco - Auld Lang Syne
Jerkatorium for Vowlvom - The Sugary Goo Inside
Jerkatorium for Vowlvom - Your Discarded Cigarette
Johnny Cashpoint for Lichenthroat - I Used to Know You Better
Lichenthroat for Johnny Cashpoint - When it Snowed
Micah for Sleepysilverdoor - You'll Know It When You See It
Owl for Jocko - We Were So Grand
Paco for Crumpart - Right Town, Wrong Address
Phlebia (Sleepysilverdoor) for Owl (Vowl Sounds) - Shock Value
Fluffy for Caravan Ray - ABCD Puppies
Third Cat for Jerkatorium - Ocean of Blood
Vom Vorton for Glennny - My Favorite Monster

I'm in. https://songfight.org/artistpage.php?key=sockpuppet

also consider http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php?key=_3C3 http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... _3Ckpupp3t

or if you're feeling incredibly retro http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... _porcupine but I don't recommend those songs in general

also a lot of the music at https://music.sockpuppet.us/ was written for song fight but not recorded in time, for example

https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/paper-thin
https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/come-out
https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/convalescence

[edit] If we're considering sidefights, these songs were written for Circle of Titles:

https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/made-from-corn
https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/adding-up-to-nothing
https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/youre-never-around

and this was vaguely songfight-related:

https://music.sockpuppet.us/track/wiene ... motorcycle

Really I don't mind my assignee covering anything I've written. Even instrumental stuff.

I'm in too. This is going to require me to finally figure out how to cover someone else's song.

Though most of my stuff in the past 5 or so years has been on Nur Ein under various names (Tydon Docks, Strangely Brown, Strangelove, Sid Denison...and others). If you are unfortunate enough to draw me you’ll need a month to trawl through the shit.

FYI the Jukebox has the "related artists" data in it from the archive and has a way to add new related artists on the fly. You have to have an account to sign in and do it though and I had to shut down the account signup because of spambots. EDIT: And the Google/Facebook/Twitter integrations require constant upkeep that I don't have time for, so they don't work anymore either. But unless anybody minds I may try to scrape any as-yet-unsaved links folks are mentioning here to put in there.

Jerkatorium is in.

http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php?key=jerkatorium
http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... ommersmith
http://www.songfight.org/artistpage.php ... neous_jerk

If Nur Ein songs are fine for this (I'm going to assume they are) then our Nur Ein Jerkatorium and Matchy Matchy are at these links:

https://nurein.songlander.com/bands/625 ... 471F026BE9

If SpinTunes songs are fine for this (I'm going to assume they are) then here are some more options:

On that note the songfight artist archive also has the artist bios with "see also" links and any admin with server access (e.g. me, lunkhead, and presumably JB) can add them there too. In case you want that information to be on the main songfight site anyway. Looks like the last update to that was way back in 2016.

[edit] oh god I just poked at that code. one of these days I'm gonna rewrite this website's backend, I swear

Song Fight entries

I think the intent is that everyone picks from everyone's Song Fight entries, but if you want to venture further afield:
Nur Ein
SpinTunes 13, 14, 15, 16
More piles of songs

Actually - anyone drawing me may find it easier just to start at my Spotify profile - all songs on there are either SongFight or nur ein songs (though some of the titles have changed eg. “Pictures of Natalie Portman” was originally “Don’t Break my Heart George Lucas” on SongFight, “A Family Affair was “who called the ape” and “Engineering Love” began life as Nur Eins “A Million Watts” - I think all the others still have original SongFight titles)

Oh, I can only get in if we can count Spintunes. They're sidefights, they count, right?
Sure, anything in the Songfighter's published catalog is fair game as far as I'm concerned.

Fluffy, Lunkhead: I'd been wondering about that! I tried to link all my songs from my early days to my Phlebia account on there at one point, but never could figure out how to log-in. Could you set that up for me?

I would like to participate. Thought of putting up only different names I've entered under, but can't remember them all. And good luck wading through the swamp that is my archive, it big. Couple of good ones though.

Given you're the most prolific entrant on this whole site, it'd be an interesting project to go back and listen to all of your songs in chronological order. I've done that with a couple of artist, but I think I'd need at least a week of nearly constant listening to comb through that backcatalogue. I just listened to your Terror In Tiny Town entry cause that was the first time I competed against you. While you've definitely honed your craft a bit, it's still very recognizably your style and still pretty good! Honestly I'm impressed by how few hiatuses you've taken from this place.
