The Handbook
Micah Sommersmith
I know it’s hard to live in a world surrounded by other people
This would all be so much easier on your own
If you think this way, you’re forgiven
But it’s just not the world that we live in
So I’ve compiled this resource to let you know
Whenever you need, just stop and take a breath and look
At the step-by-step instructions in this handbook
Step one is to know yourself
For better or worse, both in sickness and health
To trace your emotions back to their sources
Measure the strength of your internal forces
Not always easy, or pretty, or fun
But knowing yourself is step one
Step two is to then accept
That all those around you are just as complex
It’s not only you with a rich inner life
You got no monopoly on hardship and strife
Knowing everyone else is as human as you:
This, my friend, is step two
Then step three is to realize
That nobody else sees the world through your eyes
They’re human like you, but they’re creatures apart,
With different humors pumped by different hearts.
We’ve all got our own neuroses and needs,
And acknowledging this is step three.
And step four is to realize that nobody else can fix you
Step five is to realize you can’t fix anyone else
Then we get to step six,
Which is learning and embracing this:
While people cannot be fixed, they can be helped.
Then step seven is to live your life
With all of these principles well in mind
Treat your neighbor with a little grace
And everything else will just fall into place
We can build paradise on earthly time
You know seven’s the obvious rhyme
I know it’s hard to live in a world surrounded by other people
This would all be so much easier on your own
If you think this way, you’re forgiven
But it’s just not the world that we live in
So I’ve compiled this resource to let you know
Whenever you need, just stop and take a breath and look
At the step-by-step instructions in this handbook

The Handbook
by Max Bombast
People ask "How do you do it Max?"
Listen close and I'll give you the facts
People ask "How do you do it Max?"
Well I'll tell you the truth
But it won't be much use
To you now
First thing that you gotta do is
Fire every single one of your muses
(Unless they happen to be me)
Next you delete all your music
God knows you're never gonna use it
So go and snap all your CDs
*snap*
Next step, hardest yet
This is the part where you play hard to get so just
Go pull that phone cord out the wall
Get rid of your instruments
That's the only way that you can not be tempted to
Break a string or break your heart
Oh these are the steps to take
If you wanna walk in my shoes
Oh these are all my mistakes
I made them
So can you!
People ask "How do you do it Max?"
Listen close and I'll give you the facts
People ask "How do you do it Max?"
Well I'll tell you the truth
But it won't be much use
To you now
Now wait a solid decade then
Look in the mirror and slap your face and
Go out and join a band
But next, and this part's essential,
Never play a show and start to go mental
So then you hatch up a plan
Build a room in your house
Where you can go to scream and shout and learn
Just what it takes to be a star
Buy back all of your instruments and then
Jump in and hit submit and go
Break a string or break some hearts
Oh these are the steps to take
If you wanna walk in my shoes
Oh these are all my mistakes
I made them
So can you!

The Handbook
Berkeley Social Scene
You’ve been tapped to come and work for us
Not a choice - It cannot be discussed
This guide shows how to do the job
Our machine now sees you as a cog
Read the handbook then burn it
You’re now a part of our secret unit
Meet, charm and then you gain their trust
Learn what you can and do just what you must
Hide your motives and how far you’ll go
Not your family, no one else can know
Read the handbook and then burn it
You’re now a part of our secret unit
Your recon can save us all
You’ll start off by scaling the wall
Next dispatch with the outdoor guards
Get to the post and cut the alarm
Slip right through to the basement floor
Crack the code on the holding door
Find the target held inside
Get the photos and bring her back alive
As our agent you will do your job
Live your life in the shadows and the fog
The handbook is your place to start
The truth - it only plays a part
Read the handbook and then burn it

We’re telling you, you have to do it

The Handbook - Jules Iolyn
Soar right through the limits placed on you
Willingly be unabashedly free
Tell ‘em when they’re wrong, you know to stay strong
‘Cuz they’re gonna wanna walk all over you
Passive, don’t be, be active without apology
Be stubborn like a man because you can
Admit when you’re wrong and then move on
Don’t just sit silent and be scared
You can make it easier
Let the load be lighter
You can be free
Live effortfully and sincerely
Don’t fear, my darling dear
You’re a powerful rare breed
There may come a time
You acquire an anxious mind
In that circumstance
First, face it head on
Then make sure you’ve eaten
Then make sure you’re sleeping
Then rule out the who’s and these moods
You jealous or are you nervous?
You hiding or are you lying?
Have you been cruel?
Or caught trying to be too cool?
Then, remember that you can’t change the past
And you control how you react
Hopefully this will guide you to clarity

The Handbook
By Cavedwellers
The breezes will not blow
Your ship to ports I know
But I have no choice to carry-on
All that’s left is me
To send you off to sea
You left quite clear directions for when you’re gone
I know just what to do
To do away with you
A handbook for living is what I need
Only our leaving is guaranteed
First, call the next of kin
Whatever state you’re in
Second, you must call the funeral home
Third, select the grave
Or ashes if you’d save
Yourself the sound of counting up my bones
Fourth, choose a cedar box
Then pick the suit and socks
A handbook for living is what I need
Only our leaving is guaranteed
I’ll see you again when I’ve done my deeds
Only my joining you is guaranteed

The Handbook by The Serviettes
I need a handbook to sort out my f**king life
Not how to get a job or how to find a wife
I need one for the simple stuff
Like how the hell do I rewire a plug!?!
Don't need a plan for world domination
I've got no ideas to rise above my station
But it would be nice to understand how pensions work
Without having to Google everything first
Step one - Write a list that starts with step one
Step two - Ask Dad what to do
Step three - Get him to do it for me
Even though I've seen The Big Short all the way through
I couldn't explain subprime mortgages to you
But if you want someone to talk about The Beatles' b-sides
Then look no further, take a seat cos I'm your guy
I'm sure that'll come in handy at the apocalypse
There won't be too many out there that are less equipped
Can't find shelter, build a fire or kill for food
But I can talk about my favourite bits of Dr Who
