best worst idea: make music the way you did 20 years ago

Do we have contacts for any of the original five? Like, is "drew" the toothpastefordinner Drew/Kompressor?

That's that Drew, yes. Narbotic is still around in various circles as CollinMel. No idea what happened to the other tree.

I think I reached out to both Drew and Collin early this year on Twitter, maybe January? I don't think I heard back.

Not surprising, last I was aware both of them seemed to pretty much want to leave Song Fight! behind them.

Impulse Tracker high five! I think 20 years ago I was still making making backing tracks that way then adding guitar and vocals using a four-track. And putting my microphone in a sock as a "pop shield". Sadly I was not sharing the results with Song Fight, as I'm sure I'd have received some extremely useful / upsetting criticism.

Re: Fire up the Cadillac (Golfpunk Rides Again prefight)
Sounds familiar. For my first few Song Fight! songs I actually recorded my instruments and vocals as a bunch of samples which I sliced-and-diced and tried to arrange in the tracker. Eventually I upgraded to recording it as a backing track on a Tascam Portastudio, which was a little less obnoxious (but only just). Then at one point mc3p0 (aka Swedish Masturbation Unit) turned me on to CoolEdit Pro and I never looked back from multitrack DAWs.vowlvom wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 10:51 pmImpulse Tracker high five! Husky Youth is the last one I did with Impulse Tracker and Fool in the Middle was the first using CoolEdit, although I think I still used the Portastudio for a few of my 2003 songs. I was definitely all-DAW by 2004 though.

20 years ago I made my first ever recording...me and my friend Cooper (RIP) spent a weekend writing goofy songs on my Yamaha keyboard and my mom's cheap tape recorder at the ripe old age of 10. I still have it, it's...charmingly amateurish! Maybe I should put it on bandcamp.

I am tempted to take up this challenge…
In another thread, this looks really neat. https://polyend.com/tracker/

I too am tempted by the optional Fluffy challenge. Can't help but think of this song. Both riding again and punky. And yes, I'm old. Too bad. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uuH74dLMwIs

Re: Fire up the Cadillac (Golfpunk Rides Again prefight)
Well I’m in for the third time in a row but I only read the title before submitting and not the 20th anniversary stuff, so no references to that.

Re: Fire up the Cadillac (Golfpunk Rides Again prefight)
They *may* be optional, but some folks like to be stingy with their votes for non (supposedly) optional challenge included songs. Of course, if you are doing songfight ONLY for the votes then that's another problem entirely. (Of course, who doesn't like votes.)

Re: Fire up the Cadillac (Golfpunk Rides Again prefight)
Are you talking about the optional challenges or the title itself? Optional challenges are the sort of thing that some people care about one week, others don't at all, and some care some weeks but not others. And they sometimes affect votes except for when they don't.
As for the title, it's a callback to the first archived title on the website. But that's mentioned above I think.

I dug out my tascam porta 02 and even dug out the replacement belts I purchased a while back. It won't power up.
