Song Fight! Live(Stream) - September 2020

Post by jb »

Hello Song FIghters!

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the birth of Song Fight! For many years, we’ve marked the year with an in-person get-together we call “Song Fight! Live”. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Song Fight! Live has been canceled. Womp womp.

BUT, we can’t let this year pass without some kind of celebration. So we’re still going to get together and enjoy the music of our Song Fight peers past and present-- but we’re gonna do it “virtually” all through the month of September.

What: Four livestream broadcasts of content from the Song Fight community, plus a special “live” fight hosted by our very own Fightmaster Senior, “Spud”.

Where: Our new YouTube Channel! Please subscribe, we need 100 subscribers to be able to live stream!

When: Every Saturday in September, and the final Sunday, sometime around 8pm Eastern, venue TBA. Who: You! Anyone who has ever participated in Song Fight is invited to contribute content, and anyone with Internet access is invited to watch the stream and join the chat!

How:
Here are the types of content we’d love to share:
  • You playing a “set” of up to 20 minutes in length of your Song Fight hits
  • You playing an entry to the “live” fight
  • You covering someone else’s entry to a Song Fight
  • A music video that you made some time ago of a Song Fight entry
  • A video of yourself telling a story about Song Fight, such as:
    • Meeting a friend
    • Going to a Song Fight Live event
    • How you found Song Fight
    • What Song Fight means to you

FAQ:
Q: Do I need a ticket to watch this?
A: Nope.

Q: Can I host a livestream of my own during September?
A: Yes! Please do! If you let us know the details, we’ll announce it on the boards and on the front page of Songfight.org

Q: What format and resolution should the videos be?
A: We’ll make anything work, but the higher the resolution the better.

Q: Where will the livestreams be shown?
A: Probably YouTube, but we’re working to figure that out now.

Q: Will the livestreams be recorded?
A: Yes, we think so. But you won’t get to join in the livechat if you watch them later!

Q: What will you do with the video I submit?
A: We’ll show it during the livestream, and we’ll include it in the saved recording of the livestream. If you submit something, we assume you have permission to do so, and you’re giving us permission to include it in the stream.

I'm really excited to watch and chat with everyone, and I hope to see you (virtually) soon!

JB

Only 20 minutes? Oh no, I'll have to trim my set list down. And here I thought that not being stuck with the limitations of a physical venue it could be longer! Oh well.

Of course being video I can just record whatever and then trim it down, I suppose.

Anyway, looking forward to this! I've been rehearsing with a socially-distant band and everything.

We may not have the limitation of a physical venue but we do have the limitation of zoom attention spans, so 20 minutes seems like a good set length to keep ‘em wanting more!

You can also submit a bunch of different videos that just kind of add up to 20 minutes separately and we will work them into the streams in what seems to be most entertaining!

Also, we encourage side-streams all month! So feel free to plug a longer set that streams aside from the “official” ones. We will happily promote any and all activity!

This is awesome, and the rundown is very well put together. Is there a venmo or something we can contribute to for hosting costs?

Also, maybe limit video submissions to 1080p. Very few people have the hardware to view content in 4k, and broadcasting in 1080 while live-downscaling from 4k will be hard on the broadcaster's rig.

Appreciate the thought— if something comes up that’s bandwidth or storage intensive we will reach out! Current plan will involve YouTube Live, so hosting costs hopefully won’t come into play.

Currently I hope to process anything crazy using Handbrake or similar, and stream that. The Dropbox has plenty of space so I’m not worried about the uploaded files as much. Let me know if I’m being foolish though please!

Hey. It's been a while. I think I might get in on this.
I am definitely too square for how experimental this is, but I can imagine that if I was in the right state of mind, the section starting at 2:20 might transport me to another dimension - jeffhenderson

Yeah! I just did a medley: all of my entries from the past 12 years I participated. Had to get all the ditties back in mind.
21 songs condensed to 7 minutes. Chronologically, of course. It was good fun. :D

The Video ist just uploading.

Trying to figure out the best "quality vs. interesting" solution. Like, the best sounding presentation would obviously be just a full on music video production. But that seems boring and not in the spirit of Songfight Live.

Singing live to tracks seems like a happy medium between that and just 'guy-and-guitaring' your way through.

On the video front: If singing live to tracks, it seems like it would be more interesting to have the live video feed overlayed on video of instrumental track recording. I have a pretty beefy PC rig, but I'm worried that running Pro Tools plus having OBS trying to live broadcast multiple 1080p overlay feeds might be a bit much for it.

What are you other solo performers planning on?

I'm going to attempt to find time to practice and record a rhodes and voice video of a short set. But even if I don't manage that, y'all will see me on fluffy's.
