Creative Space Storage and Organization

Anybody have any storage and shelving type furniture that they find very useful in your music making room (whether it's a dedicated music room or a multipurpose room)?

Yes, I have 2 sets of shelves I built myself using 4ft MDF boards for shelves. They can hold milkcrates, old 24pack beer boxes, and tubs up to 38qt size. They stand 4ft tall. I have my studio monitors on top and my rolling desk in front. My studio room doubles as a craft room so the shelves hold a mix of tubs for crafting and musical instrument cases. Sorry, can’t figure how to upload pic...

Sounds cool! I'd love to see a photo. To upload a photo, you have to go to the "full" editor and under the "save draft" / "preview" / "submit" buttons there are two tabs, one is "options" the other is "attachments", you can click "add files" and I think for images there is a checkbox to add the image "inline" in the post.

Thanks for the info! These are 2 of the sets of shelves side by side along one wall.

I have a chest of drawers with some IKEA dividers inside each drawer that, in theory, most of my useful cables and microphones and gadgets are sorted into. But in reality it's absolutely chaos.

Also there's a built-in wardrobe in my music room so I have one of those canvas hanging divider things in there (probably also from IKEA) which has all my percussion, spare guitar strings etc. That's quite handy but obviously reliant on having a wardrobe with a suitable rail so possibly not widely useful!

Hmm also I have some stacking boxes with guitar pedals in... And hooks on the back of the door with frequently used instrument cables that occasionally the cats will try to pull down.

Definite room for improvement. I might see if I can sort things out a bit next month before the annual onslaught of chaos that is FAWM. Curious to see any other interesting ideas!

I have a tiny little space with a desk built in, and some colourful Ikea cabinets that are super fun but also mostly useless.

I don't have a huge stash of stuff anymore, and most of what I do uses that one mic, or a guitar, or the little USB keyboard that's hiding under the iMac.

My previous room had tons of built-in shelving, which was great overall even though some aspects of it were awkward. My new room has no built-in shelving but a pretty large closet and I get to use the whole closet, it doesn't have to be multi-purpose for storage of all kinds of other stuff. I have two of these:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/skubb-orga ... -80306271/

... which I was thinking might be good for cables and odds and ends, and one of these, not sure how best to use it:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-she ... -20275885/

I'd like to get something more but I'm not sure what.

I am a fan of Ikea's IVAR modular shelving system, which has a bunch of options including closed cabinets and drawers. I use a LOT of it in my studio and it helps me almost keep up with my clutter!

I also use a bunch of Metro wire shelving for heavier stuff, like I keep my 3D printer and file server and scanner and so on accessible that way, and it has the bonus of having plenty of ways of routing cabling through and around it. My 3D printer specifically is on a sort of shelving-workbench with wheels, and I also have a bunch of 3D printed clips for hanging headphones and stuff off of my tall cabinet.

I'd share pictures but my studio is currently a mess and I don't think it puts the stuff in a particularly good light. :)

As far as actual bins for keeping stuff in, Daiso and Ikea both sell some really great, cheap, stackable plastic bins with lids. I use the $2 Daiso ones everywhere (kitchen, studio, bathroom) and they are a huge organizational life saver for me.

That all looks promising. Unfortunately I no longer live near an IKEA and they want to charge us $200 to ship anything to Bend. Until the weather is nice enough for us to feel like driving to Portland and back to hit up the IKEA there, their stuff is sadly not practically attainable for me.

Yeah, that makes sense. I also suspect you don't have any Daisos nearby, either, although they sell the bins I like online... in packs of 40.

If we’re basically saying “recording office”, I try to keep anything non-essential out of it so I can focus. Most of my computer and AV cables/doodads are in a Home Depot Husky toolchest/workbench in the garage.

Everything else fits in my desk drawer or is a permanent fixture.

Huh, turns out some IKEA products are available on Amazon from some kind of reseller, so we could get those with reasonable shipping fees.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=IKEA&ref=bl_ ... 2593877011

Ha, oh well. Looks like the resellers are marking everything up 2x so, no real benefit then.

Yeah people resell Ikea stuff on walmart.com too, sometimes it's a better deal there.

I moved into my girlfriend’s house and dumped all my shit in her spare bedroom. She doesn’t go in that room. It is best that way.

Getting my monitors off of the desk was a big space saver for me. I also put a sliding shelf under my workspace so my yamaha key board is always tucked away ready to pull out and abuse.

I have a rack built into the closet to the left which houses the computer and other unrelated things. I guess that’s my tip for this thread - if the room has a closet, commandeer it. Build shelves, throw in an old dresser, whatever- because nobody will have to see it.

Main desk - set up for work at the moment but I just swap the laptops at the weekend. Or in theory if I get inspired in the week, but ugh working from home kills my enthusiasm.
