Nur Ein XVI: General Discussion Thread

Post by Niveous »

You're sixteen
You're beautiful
Nur Ein!

Nur Ein XVI is coming up in May, so start getting prepared. I haven't set up the schedule yet but it will be soon after SpinTunes ends.

I'm currently looking for judges. I'm looking for a very diverse group of judges with some open minds. Judging a music competition is an odd beast and I want a set of judges who can tame it. Send me a direct message or catch me on FB Messager or IG (terroratspacecamp or nivwalks) if you're interested in tackling the challenge.

This isn't the starting gun but Nur Ein is coming very soon.

Hmmmm. It has been very quiet on this front. Are people still knee deep in SpinTunes?

I'm going to finalize the calendar this week. Still looking for judges.

I'm not doing SpinTunes, just didn't have anything to say. I don't want to be a judge. I probably won't be able to prevent myself from participating as a contestant in some way, judging from the last 14 years.

Near the end of every Nur Ein, there's always some drama and grousing from the judging panel about how it's a thankless job... And I sympathize with that. But may I offer a counterpoint?

I find judging to be genuinely rewarding and fulfilling. It's educational to listen to a large group of songs, most of which don't sound like anything I ever would have come up with, and try to tease out the creative process, articulate what's working about each one for me and what's not working, and offer suggestions. On top of that, I think that judging for two years in a row (which was a decision that I made after accepting that I'd never win one of these myself) actually made me a better songwriter and recording artist. Plus, you get to come up with all the titles and challenges.

I won't sugar coat it and say it's all fun all the time. Rounds 0 and 1 are a lot of work. Ranking things involves making a lot of hard decisions. And the people you're judging often don't take that judgment lying down. But for me at least, the positives outweigh the negatives. So let's see some volunteers!

Looking forward to another fun Nur Ein!

Once the schedule is set, I'll make the Listening Party links.

I'm betting BYD will be in, and as usual, out in a few weeks.

It looks like the old timers for their 11th Nur Ein are just Caravan Ray, Paco del Stinko, and BYD.

When did we get that distinction of most years in this thing? Here's to a great 16!

Coming off of judging spintunes, I will not be volunteering as tribute, but you can expect I’ll be competing, likely with the rest of mandibles in tow

If this page is where you're getting your info, FYI it hasn't been updated in a while with recent data about folks who've entered under multiple names: https://nure.in/artists.html

Then there are people who've entered in various different collaborations too (like members of BSS/Tiny Robots/TWSA/Thanks Glenny/etc. and Glenn Case solo vs in Agony Sauce et. etc.).

So, it's complicated.

If folks want to list all the ways they've been Nur Ein participants I could work on an update to that page to get all that info in there.

I'll be posted up the new schedule tomorrow. I wrote up a whole post and then screwed up and it all went poof and now I have a headache.

But Nur Ein looms on the horizon, in less than 2 weeks.

That was the page. I saw some bands were combined, and it’s also complicated with some folks in multiple bands, sometimes in the same year.

I’m just shocked it’s been so many years for us. But I’d love to see the data on it for Nur Ein and SpinTunes.

I used to use your SomeSongs database to generate data for the SpinTunes bands while it was online - a great tool. I wish more people used it.

It's been a long time, so many Nur Eins. My back of the napkin calculation leads me to believe that Glennny has been the most Nur Ein-ing-est of all, having entered many times, solo and in many bands, followed probably by Ken.

And for those who don't know this story - I was just reminded of it:

I have never liked the name "Caravan Ray".

It came from when I discovered Songfight. I was an alpaca farmer. My farm was called "Cavanreagh". Because my wife (at the time)'s father came from Cavanreagh in Northern Ireland. When I had to think up a name for my first Songfight song - I panicked...."yeah.."Caravan Ray" sound fine - a bit like "Boxcar Willie" - Ill change it later....

and then I heard of the "porn star name" thing. First Pet. Street you grew up on. I grew up on Beaumont Street. My first pet was Tex - a cat with a weird permanent damp patch....So...Tex Beaumont i wanted to become!!! Just around the time that moved from complete crap at recording to..whatever comes after that. And then Nur Ein started - and I used that name.

I tried.

And then I started getting nasty emails from a Tex Beaumont of Beaumont, Texas - telling me to fuck off and stop using his name. It wasn't actually his name either - but he didn't accept my porn star defence. Anyway....that little event led to think - lets just stay as Caravan Ray -

Anyway - Caravan Ray has never been in Nur Ein. That is the reason.

I didn't participate at all in Nur Ein I. I think Ken's participated in every one, judging in Nur Ein II and I think he played drums for TWSA in Nur Ein VI? Actually I had forgotten about that before in my rough estimates so maybe with that Ken is actually the most Nur-Ein-ing-est, sorry glennny! :P
