I laughed quite hard when I watched it, but I don't know any black people who didn't hate it, which makes me feel bad about laughing at it. Hmm..

I wonder why that is. I mean, it seems to be making fun of whites, academics, and Ken Burns, and nothing in it seems like it would be an affront to actual blacks. Then again, I come from a culture which is very self-effacing (I mean, just look at any Woody Allen movie or episode of Seinfeld), so I guess I tend to assume that everyone's that way.

There were a couple of things that tweaked a nerve in there. Plus, when you really think about it- there was a time in which you couldn't find Black Astronauts. To this day, only there have been less than 20 Black astronauts in the 40 or so years of manned space flight. And 2 of them died in shuttle explosions (one in Challenger & one in Columbia). There wasn't a black astronaut in space until 1983. So I didn't find it funny, it just made me think about how the situation must have really been like.

If you step back for a second, and realize that nobody (including the people who made the movie) can do anything about the racism that has occured in the past, you may be able to see the humor of poking fun at the error of our ways. This movie was obviously meant to point out how silly americans were back then by taking jabs at both black and white folk.
Racism itself isn't funny, but when we all step back and realize how ridiculous racism really is we might be able to put it behind us. I think this film is just illustrating this by a few nudges in the ribs.
Fluffy, you're right. Woody Allen totally just pointed out how ridiculous it is to be so conscience and paranoid of racism in society by exagerration of sensitivity.

ROB: You're crazy!
ALVY: No, I'm not. We were walking off the tennis court, and you know, he was there and me and his wife, and he looked at her and then they both looked at me, and under his breath he said, "Jew."
ROB: Alvy, you're a total paranoid.
ALVY: Wh- How am I a paran-? Well, I pick up on those kind o' things. You know, I was having lunch with some guys from NBC, so I said ... uh, "Did you eat yet or what?" and Tom Christie said, "No, didchoo?" Not, did you, didchoo eat? Jew? No, not did you eat, but Jew eat? Jew. You get it? Jew eat?
ROB: Ah, Max, you, uh ...
ALVY: Stop calling me Max.

Not to mention the fact that the line "If you were black, and you were an astronaut, you were out of work," is absurd. Think about it.
