What Happened Last Year

What Happened Last Year
by damikhz

I quit my job
And found myself
Sleeping in until 10
Eating breakfast and then
Going back to to sleep again

I lost myself in feedback networks
And strange stereo fields
Sliced up sound into grains
And made a harp
Plucked by patch cables

I sang songs of pain and hope
And traced the peaks and valleys
Of my feelings to weave a story
About falling apart at the seams

I went into nature
With a hundred fools
Where we beat drums
And searched for jewels
In the wreckage of our lives
And the ashes of a fire
That burned up who we thought
We were

And sure, sometimes I was happy
But more often there was depression
And anxiety
Misguided attempts at piety
Holding on to hurt
And hurting friends

I longed for a companion
But was afraid of being abandoned
So I left my desires unspoken
Dancing around the subject of intimacy
Where love might have been

I met a friend who likes to travel
And we traversed a peninsula on bike-back
Pitching tents in parks among pines
Slipping our bodies into
A still-cold crescent lake
We rehydrated our souls
And curry in plastic bowls

I pulled wagons through makeshift encampments
Cups of soup and chocolate Ensure
Received with gratitude
But never sure of who
would remain at that latitude

When it snowed I cried
And wondered why I
Get to sleep safe and sound
While so many people
Have to sleep on the ground

I dug graves
For a death ritual
But felt no closer to my own
Shoveling dirt with a father and son
Unearthing ancient river stones
Shaking habitual tension
From my muscles and bones

We thanked the Earth
And the trees
And the sky
They slaughtered a chicken
For our final meal
And I started to feel
Alive again

I saw a waterfall near a Bend in the river
I shivered in the Badlands
But a circle of brothers
Warmed my heart

I wanted to believe
We are only as alone
As we choose to be
So I went home
Looking for connection
In the midst of this inflection point
That feels more like an abyss
To learn family history
To find out what I missed as a child
That makes it so difficult
To speak my needs
That leaves me yearning for skin-to-skin
With someone who loves me

I can't tell you
What happened last year
It was a liminal space
Where I tried to face my fears
Where I tried to see myself
As something other than a failure
And I largely failed

Well that ship has sailed
And I can continue to impale myself
On the spears of success
Or I can disarm
And reharmonize this sad song
Turning my longing
into a grand chorus of
I'm happy, I'm happy, I'm happy!
Clap my hands so you'll know it
And face the New Year
With a Cheshire Cat grin
Refusing to play a game
That I will never win

What Happened Last Year

What happened last year?
None of your business, dear!
What happened last year
Stays in last year ...

You'd better raise your beer
And summon up some cheer,
A reset at new year -
Opportunity grows near!

CHORUS

What happened last year?
Twelve awful engineers
Conspired to ride your rear
And drown your hole in fear

Every year you say
"Happenings last year
Must stay in last year"
But reality interferes

CHORUS

You say it every year x2

CHORUS

You think I would've won the lottery by n ow
But every ticket always loses somehow
My old truck needs some tires and gas
I've gotta big crack in the front glass

Got no groceries and the rent is due
My clothes are all dirty but my phone is brand new
I've got no money for my property tax
I gotta fight the dog for the table scraps

Don't remind what happened last year
If I'm too drunk to remember
It seems I lose my mind every year
On the thirty first of December
I gotta celebrate another new year
By chugging another beer
Last year let me down
Last year let me down
Again

I lost my job a couple years ago
Where it went, well, nobody knows
Shoulda tried to hold on stronger, I guess
'Cuz now I can't pay my debts

Unemployment ran out months ago
I sold my last guitar and now I'm broke
I guess I could've pawned my father's old watch
It's 'round here somewhere in a box

Don't remind what happened last year
If I'm too drunk to remember
It seems I lose my mind every year
On the thirty first of December
I gotta celebrate another new year
By chugging a couple of beers
Last year let me down
Last year let me down
Again

Got nothing to look forward to in this whole life
Got nothing but bills and a cranky ex-wife
To keep me on my toes

Don't remind what happened last year
If I'm too drunk to remember
It seems I lose my mind every year
On the thirty first of December
I gotta celebrate another new year
By chugging a case of beer
Last year let me down
Last year let me down
Again

What Happened Last Year
The Pannacotta Army

You seem so restless once again
It's what I expect
You can't hide your feelings from me when
I'm one step ahead

I'm prepared, I know what's coming

What happened last year
Is no longer real
There's just an absence I can feel
What happened last year
Is in the past
And fading like an unfixed photograph

Sometimes you treat me like a friend
Others a threat
You keep on promising to stay
But it hasn't happened yet

But I'm sure if I keep waiting

What happened last year
Is no longer real
There's just an absence that I feel
What happened last year
Is in the past
And fading like an unfixed photograph

What Happened Last Year - WreckdoM

What happened last year
Stays in last year
But I still like to reminisce

Things will never be the same
Since the thing that we shall not name
Happened in the recent past

What happened last year
It was a sonofabitch
What happened last year
It was bait-and-switch
What happened last year
It was a miracle
What happened last year
It done rung my bell

It was like a bolt out of heaven
Like a bat out of hell
Like a tornado inside of a hurricane

It knocked me down and then it rocked me to sleep
Then it put me in a headlock and it rubbed my feet
Then it wrote me a check my ass couldn't cash
Please explain why the crypto crashed

What happened last year?

Then at the stroke of midnight I was wide awake
When the bell tolled a dozen times
With goddess my witness I swear with a swiftness
The reaper of death was nigh
I then heard a peep and a prophet did speak
Of the rise of a king among turds
Then out of the cold in shower of gold
Comes Elon Musk on the wings of a bluebird

What Happened Last Year

We should be tracking our good times
Years go by and we’re just gliding
This shouldn’t be the way we roll
There’s too much we don’t control
We wash away our very souls
Like waves steal sand
It takes a toll

Friends take a back seat far too much
I peel off excuses, that’s my crutch
My storylines are iron clad
I don’t believe in calling back
I cultivate what makes me sad
How did I let things get this bad?

What happened last year just won’t do
I’ve got a plan; I’ll see it through
All invitations I’ll accept
There will be no more regrets
So not playing hard to get
I had left myself for dead

What Happened Last Year - Paco del Stinko

It was cold but it didn't snow
Put it in neutral nowhere to go

What happened last year I can't say
It's gone away
Like yesterday

Grey turned to green a sight unseen
Double the time that goes in between

January February March - You didn't know if you hadthe heart
April May June - It took forever but came too soon
July August September - Constant car wreck and triple rear ender
October November December - Round and round we go all in the blender

Remember plague and don't forget your age
Keep your eyes on the road and don't mind the rage

Yeah and we ain't done yet
Bringin' the stink since 2006.
