New FAQ section about AI

Post by Lunkhead »

After a lot of discussion amongst the admins, we have added a new FAQ section about use of AI tools in Song Fight.

https://www.songfight.org/faq.html#ai

That FAQ section will be the authoritative info. We reserve the right to modify the information and will notify folks if we make changes.

Here is a snapshot of this initial version, but please always refer directly to the FAQ section for the authoritative info:
Can I use AI?

Song Fight is a creative songwriting exercise for human beings.

Acceptable uses of AI in your Song Fight submissions include but are not limited to:

Using AI instruments such as Logic Session Musicians, Natural Drums, and other such plugins to create an instrumental performance track that is included in a larger arrangement
Using AI tools to generate sounds or lyrics that a human then edits, modifies, re-performs, or re-arranges
Using AI tools to modify the sounds you make yourself, for example changing a guitar into a trumpet, or converting a female vocal into a male vocal

Disqualifying uses of AI in Song Fight submissions include but are not limited to:

Full lyrics generated by AI and not human edited
Full musical arrangements generated by AI
Full songs with lyrics and music generated by AI

We do not have the resources to explore the gray areas around this so do not bother trying to make us do so. We reserve the right to refuse or take down any submitted song for any reason.

Two quick obvious follow up questions and answers:

I have lyrics but I’m no good at making music.

Form a collaboration.

I’m good at making music but I can’t come up with lyrics.

Form a collaboration.

Thanks for doing this!

I'd like to suggest that we allow AI mixing and/or mastering as well as those will become more prevalent in the future.

Those are absolutely allowed, yeah, and I think would be covered in the first "acceptable uses" point but we can certainly call AI mixing/mastering out in that section.

I added a clause regarding that. Thanks for the callout, Ken.

Also note that mixing/mastering is not a generative AI process and it's really just generative AI we're trying to disallow here, but it's hard to capture that in a way that's future-proof and not prone to what-about-isms and so on.
