I spoke to Steve Gadd earlier tonight...

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

He did a drum clinic at a local highschool, and it was quite awesome. He even played the pattern from 50 Ways to leave your Lover (for you Songfight folks, that's MC Frontalot's Yellow Lasers).

During the Q&A part, I got up and asked him about micing techniques and stuff and he basically said 'I don't mess with that stuff, I just play.'

Fair enough.

That's way cool. Good at you for going down to his clinic. I used to get all tripped up to see him in the 70s. I can't count how many shows, with Chick Corea, Eddie Gomaz, Steve Kahn, Jaco, etc. He must be pretty mellow now.

dude, steve gadd is the shit.

he is one of the pioneers of playing with 2 drumsticks in each hand. his work on steely dan's aja album is some of the greatest drumming of all time on a rock and roll album. and i remember watching that televised concert of simon and garfunkle live in central park like 20 years ago or so, and he was playing with 4 sticks, and i was blown away.

easily, in my opinion, one of the greatest session drummers of all time.

that's the moeller technique.. it's a vibraphone thing Gadd borrowed for drumkit... he is deadly. I love his work with Weckl on Weckl's tune, MAsterplan (written by chick corea) where Gadd and weckl groove together and trade solos.

Gadd is a fuckin genius.

I failed to mention the tail end of my exchange with Steve:

When I asked him about micing techniques, he said he pretty much left that up to the engineer. My reply was "As well you should, Steve."

He laughed, as did the audience.

Also, he did the 4 drumstick thing.

I've got 50WTLYL down on drums now. This is a relative term, of course.

Man, I saw the Chick Corea Elektric Band with Dave Weckl a long time ago. I was right up front about two feet from Weckl. I don't normally listen to that kind of music, but seeing it live and especially seeing a drummer like that just blew me away. One of the few drummers who I just want to watch for the whole concert.
