Dude, I was too swamped with "work" this week to anything at all... totally bummer cause the titles the last two weeks have been pretty stellar... ah well...

Though I'm not in this fight, I dedicate "Rule of Thump" to the late Slyvester Ritter aka WWF wrestler- The Junkyard Dog (1953-1998), master of "The Thump" powerslam.

It's a duel!

Abecedarian- Diggin' the kick sound. Nice, like, ramblyness I guess you'd call it. I especially like that section where the bass and kick are kind of together. That's a nice sound. Pleasant sort of interludey tune, wouldn't hit Skip if it came up on iTunes.

Abjure!- Sounds like you just wrote a bunch of goofy words really quickly and then made music for them without changing the words to fit any kind of like, normal song structure. Couldn't you have at least put some kinda solo instrument on those empty places where you just do the verse chords? Just one take with some keys on it; it's not like the chords are complex or anything and you couldn't just play along. And what's with that snare drum freaking out? And that Uno card line... man... I dunno, that's kind of reaching isn't it? At least you can hear everything, mostly, although you could have taken another minute to get the bridge doubling to line up better, no? And a fade out ending? WTF? Cop out a little more next time. And why not repeat it eight more times while you're at it. God.

Abjure! - This is real fuckin' solid. Like proper solid. The Uno card line kicks ass, your song kicks ass. It's fun, it's dark, it's well-played and sung. Don't worry that some people may not dig it. Because I do. And I'm a fucking genius.

Abecedarian - Kind of Weenish, yeah? I like the sparseness of this and the basketball dribble drum-machine. The sparseness I originally liked wears off a bit near the end. Still pretty cool, though.

Love,
Luke

rule of thump

erg. measly fight. not the songs, mind you, just the attendance.

abecedarian
- the drums teeter on the edge of being out of kilter
- does this song have a direction? it started off strong, but then it took a left at albequeque...
- the bass work is really quite good, a good way to musically tie in the title

abjure
- cute lyrics; "with some fava beans!" haha!
- the guitar and drums seem slightly out of sync
- good bridge, but the ending gets a little much, fade sooner

Abecedarian - nice keyboardy thing at the beginning. The bass is way sloppy for a song that is bass-driven. But I like the dual-bass action. I love a good bass groove but whenever it loses the time momentarily I'm slipping out of the 'zone' again. I'm getting bored at 1.44 a little bit. It feels half-formed. It's a very very cool idea I'd just like to hear a bit more to it. How many times can I mention the word 'bass' in a single paragraph? bass. *shrug*

Abjure! - How does one kick anyone's ass like a clown? Put on really big shoes first? Lyric is a bit annoying at times, drop the film references, and you have the Wonderstuff. Lovely vocal moments especially in the harmonies. Oh god this is really like The Wonderstuff. Size of a Cow ... Vote.

Niv's review paragraph

What the fudge. 2 band fight. What the hell. OK jb & Spud, I'll make a song during my lunch break for this fight, if you'll accept it because a 2 song fight is SAD. Fight Abjure! is back and I feel after this song we should take away his exclamation point. I dig the fact that you're bringing the Kung Fu Hustle but it's only mildly amusing. Next, Abecedarian brings the funk but in that Calfborg way (which is odd). Is this the Viracocha? An opus to the joy of a good bass. I'll take that over the 36 Chambers of fluff. I'll vote abecedarian. Wow, that was sad. really really sad.

There's something familiar about the Abjurer's voice, jb, maybe you can help me place it. And his harmonies are very familiar too...

Reviews to come.

It's "Kick your ass like the clown you are". And no, it doesn't make sense. Like I was saying. I suspect heroin. Or Roofies. Definitely Roofies.

Who the hell are you fooling?

Eh, I'm voting Abjure!, but I think I'll wait to see if any late entries are posted.

Okay, sorry it took me so long, but man listening to all of those entries is just taxing.

Abjure! - I love this band name. This starts off very sloppy but progressively gets tighter as it goes on. Lyrically it was very loose in a fun way. I especially chuckled when you started explaining your imagery (uno cards) within the context of the song. For all of the flak that jb gave you, I think you share a lot in common with him: you both have this very interesting song sensibility that I would characterize in several ways, the most obvious being that your narrator is an adolescent underdog who rails against his lot in life (could be part II of jb's ugly duckling)

The short and quick: Very rough song, but I liked it.

Abecedarian - This was a pseudo experimental piece about the time I got mugged in high school and had my face broken :) I got better.

ok. this is just my dumb opinion.....

well, this fight is a no win situation as i see it. if you win, you can say "i won in the smallest songfight of all time! a fight of 2!"... and if you lose, well...nuff said.

so i'm going to break the rules in this particular instance and vote for both of you. because i don't want to see either one of you lose.

i hope you guys tie.

That's why we need to have the ultimate late entry surge. Step up and make this fight boom from 2 songs to more than 2 (that is if the Fightmaster permit such an endeavour).
