Austin City Limits

Post by blue »

One of my father's many gifts to me, along with hard liquor straight, singing like a muppet, and the deeply rooted knowledge that Chevy will forever pwn Ford, was growing up watching Austin City Limits on Saturday nights. If you've never seen it, it's live concerts of modern musicians in incredible fidelity on a nice stage in Austin. (Count the number of Neumann badges on stage.) The artists run the gamut from pop princes to indie darlings. Coming up: Pixies, Neko Case, Fountains of Wayne, etc. Well, also John Mayer, but no one likes him. At least it's a chance to see real musicans play instruments. Modest Mouse and Guided by Voices were on this weekend. Here's the upcoming shows:

Jayhawks and Gillian Welch is gonna be a good one. If you've never seen her and you play guitar, you have to watch it just for David Rawlings. The dude is fuckin amazing.

(Oh, I guess this season is all repeats.. c'est la)

Man, I remember catching Leonard Cohen on there in the late 80's and just being amazed about how he totally deSTROYed and sounded totally badass, even though he was playing a very laidback and decidedly nonrockin' set. Man, I taped that like 3 songs in after being blown away, and I must have watched it like 50 times. ACL is good stuff.

hahaha...i was just watching the modest mouse/GBV one the other night and was laughing at how drunk and sloppy robert pollard was (as usual). you'd think he'd have mellowed a bit for TV but not a chance.

i agree. austin city limits is an awesome show. especially if they have someone like asleep at the wheel on, or del mcoury, or lyle lovett on. i even saw phish on austin city limits once.

I quite enjoyed the Wilco/Bright Eyes one. And I was quite angry when for whatever reason the Ozomatli/Polyphonic Spree one wasn't played aired.

Man, I fell asleep on the couch like 10 minutes before the Pixies! Dahh!! Best one I saw was a salute to Townes Van Zant (SP?) it had in a semi circle Willie Nelson, Beck, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett and like 6 others I can't remember. They'd all just go down the line and like Willie would say "Hey Steve help me with this song" and the rest would watch while they took turns playing.
Best show in TV. Yes, even better than Saved By the Bell.
