post-rock recommendations?

Actually since this thread has gone a bit afield, to where it's touched a bunch of bands I already know and love, I might as well even add a few things myself. Well, one, to start with; if you like Karate, look up The Secret Stars: same guy, quieter, more acoustic stuff, so beautiful it's painful. And swell live show.

Oh, and from what little I've heard so far of Tortoise, you might also like The Grassy Knoll, who put out some CDs a while back with some pretty snazzy packaging and some pretty snazzy songs inside. That's all that comes to mind at the moment, which, when your mind is as dysfunctional as mine, is saying a lot.

tortoise and slint are two post-rock bands that i can't recommend highly enough. also, most of the related side projects are great: the for carnation, brokeback, isotope 217, aerial m / papa m, and the earlier groups bastro, squirrel bait, and eleventh dream day.

on the "post" side of post-rock, i'd recommend the mercury program (i think they're extremely underrated), labradford (and the related pan american), windy & carl, stars of the lid, maserati, dirty three, and one mile north. if you dig the more esoteric stuff like gybe and explosions in the sky, i think you'll like those bands. people have already named most of the good "rock"-oriented post rock bands that i'm familiar with, though i'd like to add that macha, lungfish and ui are worth checking out. the macha/bedhead split ep is wonderful if you can get a hold of it. canada has a hell of a post-rock scene right now; broken social scene, do make say think, and valley of the giants are all fantastic. last but absolutely not least, i recommend the sea and cake, as well as sam prekop and archer prewitt's solo projects, and the earlier bands shrimp boat and coctails.

Yes. Yes it is, and the live show is just as good. They will have a new record this summer. Blue doesn't like this band for some reason that I don't quite understand. I think it is just to piss me off.

Also, good call on the Mercury Program. They have a vibraphone in the band.
