Here we go ... IMO. Written as I listen

Luke Henley - oh, you sound like Future Boy singing as Boy 'n' Guitar here. This is sloppy but utterly charming. I like this a lot (excpet the too loud tambourine) and even that doesn't bother me particularly. Good length. (I have to find a better way of putting that!) Contender.

Beatnik Turtle - I checked out your website earlier today and loved what I heard - this seems a lot lighter in tone than what I heard there. This sounds almost Dylan-esque - 'show off my ass to your art class' is cute! In fact the whole lyric is very cute/clever for a list lyric and makes this a Contender in my book immediately. yeah I like this a lot I just it was heavy like the other samples I listened to ...

DJ3HXC - Are you Pornoise from somesongs? Anyway funny I guess, but I've heard it done many times before. This is done well enough but offers nothing new to the already over-crowded porn samples over heavy noise samples market. You think I'm joking? :) Also 2 minutes just the right side of dead horse x 1 flogged. Also also last time I checked your avatar was enormous. Could you make it a little smaller please?

Dr Awkward - I have heard this tune before somewhere. Assuming that's coincidental, this is a good tune, well done enough, and I love to hear a bit of crunch on the 'fight. Drummer is a bit sloppy on occasion but at least you have a real drummer.

Eddie Bangs - ooh, that's a different sound for you, Eddie, and I like it! No odubt it's gonna kick into full on metal soon (I hope so!) I don't quite understand this lyric - is the narrator the ghost of the dead man? Or an ex-lover not allowed to the funeral? Please explain! Oh it doesn't metal out. I like. Contender.

Hans Gruber - Love that opening. It's like Deliverance Prog! You have a sweet voice and the production is great. This is so Pink Floyd covered on the porch by kissing cousins duelling banjos, with a slight reggae undertone as well. Maybe a visiting distant relative has brought some heavy duty weed. I like this, because it is utterly freaky underneath the apparent gloss of the production. All I would say is that the chorus doesn't stand out of the song as a whole - maybe some concentrated work to emboss that section? Probably a contender, but I am giving out too many of those this fight already. We shall see at the end ...

Johnsonic - this a cleverly crafted song that is so well constructed that it doesn't allow me any obvious way into it. I mean I can't really fault anything here - and wouldn't want to - great tones, good vocals, cool arrangement - but the lyric combined with the relatively quiet vocal mix isn't very welcoming - also it kind of just leaps in and goes at the same dynamic pace for the entire song - maybe some undulation would give it some more warmth? Anyway very good.

Loyalty Day - have the greatest intros - I love the 16 bars or so that lead up to Erin's voice on almost every LD I have heard - this has an almost Portishead with a heavier drummer feel to it. i guess I could imagine a trip-hop remix of this. nce smokey ambience to the piano (rhodes?) and acoustic guitar combined with Erin's voice. yeah, contender, but I rather imagine other people will need my vote more than you lot!

One Man's Hat - This has a tripped out Beck feeling to it musically - as with Johnsonic it kind of just starts and carries on at the same tonal level all the way through - could do with some meandering off the rigid arrangement into new and wild places - or if you want to do some cool blues, just turn off the drum machine. But also like Johnsonic pretty damn good despite that.

Ryan Rickenbach - oh great opening. What's that tone on the second guitar? Fluff but very very entertaining fluff. I love the percussion. The mix is much clearer this time round. Could do with a little more bass end - I appreciate the mod you're after, but if you want people to shuffle around, you need the bass to be more than an appreciative nod... would be served by being 30 second shorter ... oh what the hell, contender.

Smalltown Mike - you know, I think lyrically you are like Starfinger, in that you take a very literal take on the title (on the songs of yours I have heard) and yet you always do it with great panache and they're always interesting/entertaining to listen to. Did you write this for 'PoR' and switch? The music is very simple but the good solid production makes it strong and not a problem - you so should have ended it on 'Far away ....' at 2.00ish. Then it would have been perfect and the slightly weird off-beat ending would have underlined/contrasted the simplicty of the song, and also I think the end doesn't add anything to it much ...

SFO - From crunk to Gary Numan back to old school rap style groove. This is fantastic. And I so want there to be a full song leading on ... which is a total compliment - Contender

Spudsy Malone - oh I am not sure about the potatoes bit :).

Solar Skye - it's all a bit full-on for me - I personally like a bit more subtlety but I can imagine you spinning around an arena on invisible wires, with fireworks going off and lots of people crouched down squealing/grunting into microphones so that's a good thing for lovers of this sound. I am not the person to review this fairly, so I'll shut up now ...

Gosh what a lot of contenders - a quick scan through leaves Luke (sorry Ashok), the Turtle, Ryan, LD, and SFO. I need to think about this.

And we can see your tits. Not cool.

Also, Spudsy Malone's track was awesome. Not that I'd vote for it, but It was an awesome intermission to a great fight. I just had a good chuckle at that.

This is a really solid fight. Some of the best stuff I've heard in my short life here. Great stuff. Voting will be tough.

Ashok Henley

I just listened to this three times in a row because I wanted to “get it.” The timing glitches were really throwing me off. It’s a good song, though, and it sounds good. I dig the tambourine.

Beatnik Turtle

This is really, really good, and I think it can still get better. I love the sax, it’s so rich sounding. I think the vox are good, though they could sound fuller. Maybe some back-up vox here or there. I’d also love to hear a funky drum beat; it would also sound great as a full-on ska tune. But as it sits, it sounds great. Nice work.

DJ3XHC

This is not my thing, which I can appreciate, but the “stick it in my pussy” line is really quite silly for any genre. In fact, these lines are all beyond ridiculous.

Dr. AwkwArD

The drum intro really throws me off. I can’t tell if it’s off, or just what it is. But the song is fantastic. Some good old elbows-up punk rock. Love the vocals. The lead that kicks in at 1:33 is a little overbearing. Other than that this sounds really great—but why’s it called What’s in it for Me?

Eddie Bangs

Vox are good, but quiet, as is the gtr that comes in at :49. Great drum sound. I would have guessed that thunder and lightning sound effects would sound cheesy, but they work very well in this. This is good, but it sounds unfinished. A song like this sounds like it should go on longer than this.

Hans Gruber

Nice groove. Some reggae elements, the rest just laid back groove. Vox completely suit the song, could mabye just slightly be louder. I’m not crazy about the part that starts at 1:50, it’s not as strong as the rest. This should end on the last “What’s in it for me” without the last guitar strums. Very good.

Johnsonic

Good vox, but they could be louder. I dig the drum beat. It has a great groove but it seems to fall apart a bit at 1:35. This is funky. But again—and I hate to be a stickler—why is it called What’s in it for me?

Loyalty Day

I can’t stop bobbing my head. I’d say the chorus is not quite as good as the verse. But man, the verses are really good. I think the singer should be building a bit through the course of the song, but hey, I’m one to talk. The ‘what’s in it for me’ back-ups seem like they were tacked on at the end to make the song fit (I’m not saying they are, it just seemed sort of like that.) But good.

One Man’s Hat

Soooo funky. Louder vox needed. That bass is phenomenal. I love it. The rattle is just fantastic. Angry bass. I need louder vox though, because I can’t understand what you’re saying, and it could use a stronger ending.

Ryan Rickenbach

Some good sounds here. The choruses seem to have some timing issues, and some of the parts seem to be a bit busy.

Songfight Orchestra

Funky. I need the big picture.

Spudsy Malone

Because otherwise you’ll have lumps.

Stolar Skye

Good production, but the lead is really overpowering, and it seems to run through the whole song. It all ends earlier than I would expect.

Smalltown Mike

My first GnG, as they say. I already know how I would add a line to the chorus, what parts I would switch around etc. I won’t ever get around to it, but I know what I would do if I did.

No. I did write a Policy of Rape about excessive sampling in music—raping the record crates for disco breaks. But I decided it would be in bad taste to take such a horrific happening and change the meaning. So I wrote What's in it for Me about the other two titles.

Smalltown Mike-I like the simple recording. It sounds a little boomy through my euipment. I think it's the guitar - cause I can hear the gravel in your voice. I'd like to hear a little more dynamic in the progression - I'm expecting it to bust into a big metal anthem at about 2:00...but it doesn't.

Ashok Henley-What did you do with Luke? Did he go to India and convert to Hindu? Sittin' round the fire...stumming the guitar and shakin the tamborine. Cool. Nice melody(and harmony at about 1:50)...you're quite a songwriter, but not much of a singer...That said, if you tried a few more takes you would nail it.

Beatnik Turtle - Ha! great name. Big points for the sax intro. The mix sounds decent, considering it sounds like you did it through a cheap mic on one take. The song is a little predictable and your voice makes me wanna blow my head off, but I'm not much one to talk about bad vocals. It's good that you seem to embrace it...

Dr. Awkward - Love the freakin drums...good punkage. They're a little time-sloppy, but once the guitars kick in, it doesn't matter. The guitar sounds are so fat, but they're a little muddy in the mix, so it sounds like you're singing over them. I want to tell you to quit screaming, but it would ruin the song :) Love the buildup at the end, but it needs a finishing flam! Big Rock Points.

Loyalty Day - More great shit from you guys. The production sounds a little more boxy than your last entry - but is still quite good. Your vocalist is very good, but I want to hear her grind it out a bit more on this song - she sounds a little vacant, and is getting lost in the guitars. She should audition for Stereolab. The guitars on the bridge are very tasty. Love the chord progression...Oh, and the rhodes outtro.

Stolar Skye - Wow. Those guitars are amazing. Love the driven beat. I'd like to hear you sing more melodically (though I suspect you want nothing to do with that). Next to those fukkin guitars, your voice just loses the fight. SMOKIN SOLO!!!!

Spuds - Heeeehehehe. Don't knock the spuds, man...they've nourished many a hungry Irishman for hundreds of years. They may not have done much for YOU, but they've given so much to the rest of us. So stir them, bitch! and quit asking questions!

Eddiebangs - Ooo. Like that guitar rhythm. Oh,but I'm not too crazy about where you take it. It's a good song, though I was hoping for a more synchopated beat. Just my tastes. I like your smoky voice...envy. It reminds me of Jack Black! The fx are cool, but sends the song a little too far into maudlin territory, IMHO.

One Man's Hat - Ah; cool textures, love the slow, low darkness and pluckety-plunk. Sounds like you're sitting on a creaky porch swing behind your shanty playing a broomstick bass, then recording it in acid and loopifying it. I can't hear a damn thing you're saying, though. I don't know if I care, I like the music so much. I'd like you to change it up, though. Jus' a lil bit.

Hans - The song's about Paris Hilton..Got some new equipment I'm trying to get my brain around. First time with the geetar, and relatively happy with the results, though I'm looking forward to becoming a better player, I'm looking for some fresh chords. (Guitar and Vocal ;) ) I like the chord change at the end of the song, but the two-bar buildup right before isn't quite doing it...

DJ3XHC - Hehehe. 'You have an awesome weiner' Thank you. Giving me Webster Hall flashbacks. Not sure that I want them...

Ryan Rickenbach - Kinda like this. No pretention, and very simple, if not predictable (not always a bad thing). I really like that over-chorused guitar sound. I think I'd like to hear more of it. The time gets a little off here and there...no biggie. Pretty good vox, wish I could sing like this!

Johnsonic - Great band name! I like the song...good progression, very jammy. The rhythm guitar needs to be thinned out. It's a little muddy and drives your too far back, which is a shame, cause they're pretty good. This would sound SO good if the mix were brighter. Good tune!

SFO - Who is this? Guess I should check the board. God I love it! Great synth. It can stand alone...reminds me of Zappa. I haven't heard the full song yet, so I'm not sure how it fits into the bigger composition.

I have to think about my vote, but there are some really unusual cool songs. Thanks to you who rock.

there was a challenge to use something previously used. the intro was sampled from the "A & A" Songfight Orchestra entry. it actually links up pretty well with the previous entry as i imported the previous entry first, used it as a seperate track, and placed the sample to come in just right, so as for the continuity...you just gotta have some faith... :)

and it's not a synth. it's an electric violin.

Thanks for the compliment. But all I did to the guitar was EQ and take out the bass. I added 0 effects. Could it be my mic? It's a MXL V67.

Ya know? It's another case of "your own voice sounds much louder to you than anyone else". My girlfriend actually turned the vocals up in the mix, but it sounded waaaay too loud to me, so I turned them back down. It's also another case of "listen to advice sometimes".

Also, made some amatuer mistakes, 1st song I've recoorded in a while. Like douse the voice in reverb and have too much low end in the mix.

Oh well, let it sit for a while and remix in the future.

Reviews to come soon - thanks for the kind words and great feedback!!!

Thanks alot, but I'm not quite sure what you mean about singing melodically. The vocals were following a pretty definite melody the entire time; there wasn't any random grindcore screaming (I really don't like stuff like that). If you mean having it be less forceful or aggressive, I don't think it would've fit the rest of the song very well. I'm all about melody, and I think this was a pretty melody driven song, especially the guitars, even if it was on the heavier side.

As for my voice being overpowered by the guitars, that's probably because I don't actually have a real mic. I'm recording all my vocals on one of those internet-phone headsets, and an old, crappy one at that. I'm amazed I managed to get as much out of it as I did.

loyalty day
really sweet production. really sweet execution. wish there was a bit more reverb on the dirty guitar, but it's some real solid riffing behind the vocals there sammy. yeah, when ken doubles in on the vox, it's like butter. there's a reason you guys win so often. really solid tune.

stolar skye
yar. headbangers find songfight! this is pretty well done. solid chops for sure. not really my thing so much genre wise, but it's very well put together.

spudsy malone and the potato stirring all stars
thankfully short.

johnsonic
the vocals could definitely have more presence in the mix, in order to better carry the tune. i think you're doing some really good stuff here, everything is well played and has a good groove going for it, but the vocals seem buried. in fact, if you'd just doubled them up, added some harmonies, this would be pretty tight. as it is, it's pretty ite.

ryan rickenbach
really cool arrangement, but the mix kind of suffers for it. again, really nicely played, cool arrangement, but the mix is pretty flat. vocally, it definitely has some nice beatle touches to it. those drums really get distracting when they're off. given the right treatment, this would kick ass.

DJ3XHC
i'm sure there will be someone here that loves this but it's not me.

dr. awkward
kind of loose and ragged but it works perfectly for what you are going for. again, bring the vox up and in my face. i want to feel the virtual spittle off your vent.

songfight orchestra
this is me.

ashok henley
i kind of like it, tamborine and all. you have a future busking at fishermans wharf.

one man's hat
now this is some seriously dope shit. i fucking love this.

hans "the ultimate villain" gruber
sounds like that acoustic guitar is buried in some deep reverb/chorus. this is pretty good. it's got some dark undertones to it. at the risk of insulting you, this sounds like something i could totally hear the dead doing (not intended as an insult. i'm a dead fan).

smalltown mike
it's pretty well done but gets a bit repetitious given the lack of any sort of percussion or other instrumentation to break up the dynamics. you do a few things vocally with dropouts that help but it still feels a bit repetitive. singing is pretty solid, especially in the doubled sections.

eddie bangs
well, it's nice to see you back eddie bangs. this is a pretty cool departure for you. where's the shock and awe i come to expect from eddie bangs?!? i do like the change in style here. singing is really solid but man, i miss the rawk dude. you tease it like a lays potato chip.

beatnik turtle
not sure if thats a real stand up bass but it sounds sufficiently like one to dig it. yeah, this is pretty good. cool arrangement and well performed all around.

i think i'm voting for one man's hat.

Great Fight To All!!

STOLAR SKYE-I love the big heavy sound. Mix is a little garbled. I can’t pinpoint why, maybe just so busy in the higher frequencies – awesome guitar riffage, but the guitar sound has a touch too much overdrive/distortion/whatever imo( I would have preferred a fatter, cleaner sound ). Drums & Bass Rawk as well. Vocals are pretty good, but the melodies are bland. Overall an awesome song- catchy riffs, heavy thumping rythem groove. Great Job! (Hope you don’t mind my nit-picking )

ASHOK HENLEY- I dig it overall, but it is pretty sloppy. At times that quality gives it charm, at other times it’s just annoying. The tambourine is a bit loud in the mix. Lyrics are cool. It has a borderline Simon & Garf. Vibe to it. Not Bad.

BEATNIK TURTLE- I am totally rocking out to the sax intro. The mix is a bit thin. The vocals sound too whiny. Not bad, just like, I don’t know, Revenge of the Nerdsish? Cool lyrics & phrasing. Cute.

HANS GRUBER: ULTIMATE VILLIAN- Hip folk rockishy psychedelic reggae. Very fucking cool. I hear so many different styles in this song I am blown away. This is truly original. Great job. Fantastic.

JOHNSONIC-Nice groove. Very funky vibe here. I guess great minds think alike, I swear I didn’t rip off your lyric! Sorry dude. I would love to collab some time, cause I really like this type of music, but it’s like nothing I would ever come up with. The drum parts are great, but you gotta get some real drums, or just better cymbal sounds. The guitar is simply awesome. Very catchy. Really cool tune.

DR. AWKWARD-sloppy drums make baby Jesus cry. Nasty punk vibe. Great vocals. I dig this, pretty good mix too. The guitar sounds are great. Nice job.

LOYALTY DAY- One of my songfight favorites. Love it right off the bat. Nice lazy groove in the verse. Nice bass line during the chorus. Drums sound a bit thin, but somehow they fit in the mix like that. Keys are tasteful, and are super-snug in the mix- guitars are perfect. Everything fits together. Awesome backing vocals, and as always the lead vocal melts me. Another Gem.

SMALLTOWN MIKE-sounds like Nirvana right off the bat. Now the vocals make it yours again. Hints of AIC in there too. Lyrics are quite morbid- I like that. I like the back & forth of the vocal parts. Original. Cool ending.

RYAN RICKENBACH- I like this a lot. A bluesy/60’s vibe. I like the vocals answering each other, (and the slide/steel guitar or whatever that is) My only complaint is the thin mix. Nice little diddy here. Good job.

ONE MAN’S HAT- digging this. Yeah…. My only complaint is the “bass” guitar line is a little too loud in the mix. It overshadows the other guitar(s) Not bad for what it is. I was groovin along.

SONG FIGHT ORCHESTRA- Wow, I like, I like. Very cool synth. I want more. This really could go somewhere from where it left off. As is it sounds like an intro to a potentially great song.

DJ3XHC- Great intro. Ah shit, then you loose me.

SPUDSY MALONE & THE POTATO STIRRING ALL-STARS- a masterpiece. The mix was a little sloppy. Otherwise, top notch. 

First of all, you get a flying high-five for pulling off a remarkably good recording with the cell-phone mic. Did you equalize them at all?

You're right - you are following a melody, sorry for my inarticulate-ness. I think what I was trying to say (and forgive any further confusion here) is that the vox track feels a less dynamic because the guitar is so bright and complex. I think it's an issue of relative complexity of the two parts. Again, a taste thing here: I tend to like the vox to carry the tune's most catchy melody (Although I can think of exceptions)... I think what I should have said was I'd like to hear more dynamic or variation in the vox melody. Maybe even some overdubbed harmonies? But I'm nitpicking, dude. It kicks my fanny :)

Yeah, I equalized, compressed, multibanded, and reverbed the crap out the vocals. You can still hear the overload in the chorus and bridge a bit, but that all sounds muddier anyway because I put a second line under it an octave down.

Ah, ok, I see what you mean. Yeah, you're probably right. The vocals were done completely last minute as I couldn't figure out what to write about until the last day. And I only even found out the available titles on friday. I planned to add harmonies last but by the time I got there I was too worn out and was already an hour past the dealine anyway (mucho thanks to fightmaster for still posting me). I think my vocals are easily the weakest part of my songs and I'm hoping I can get better with that. Thanks alot for the comments.

Eddiebangs wrote:STOLAR SKYE-I love the big heavy sound.
Yeah, it's really weird, the mix sounded fine on my speakers but when I listened to it in my headphones it sounded really wonky. I can't figure out why either. It actually might be because of the distortions getting the way of each other. I had a bunch of issues with the distortion, and I didn't get it to sound quite right, but I guess that's what I get for using digital. I'm gonna try using my stompbox next time. Thanks for the full review.

The whole thing was done on a Strat. I got a little excited with my new copy of Tracktion and was a little heavy-handed on the production. It's just so much damn fun to use. BTW, thanks for the tip (you gave someone else) about the cheapie ART tube preamp. It's made the world a warmer place :)

Why would that be an insult? Fly that freak flag high! Anyway, I totally agree and I'm glad you heard it too. I'm definitely not a 'head, but I do adore some of their stuff. Halfway through recording this, "Terrapin Station" suddenly popped in my head. I think it's the noodling up on the 10th and 12th frets on the fourth 'verse' measures. Also some of my vocal delivery sounds a little Jerry. Interesting, cause I didn't think I had it in me!
