Here's another bad news update: evening shows are probably gonna have to be 21+. It looks like that is just the Massachusetts way-- anything less strict and they have to close the bar, or something similarly drastic. I won't settle for a place that won't at least let us sneak in a few underage people but I may need a list of names in advance. This is how it worked in Seattle a few years ago, I think.

Anyways: if you are under 21 and want to be part of the show please let me know asap! No promises today but it would help me to get a reasonable count. Bjam, right, and Marcus K if he's coming, and maybe a few others? Again, do not worry, because I will not settle for a place that won't let you young'uns come and perform.

I have a Saturday afternoon acoustic show in the works at a nice place that is all-ages but the evening show(s) will probably have to be bar-type places.

same here. contingent on getting hotel accomodations with very close (walking distance if possible) proximity to the venue. contingent on a venue being named.

I'm still going. Just a few months shy of 21; I would like to be part of the show but that means getting my butt in gear and entering some fights so I have SF-related stuff to play. Shouldn't be a problem though. Also, anyone who needs/wants a clarinet player for the show, I'd be more than happy to jump in.

Have you happened to look into warehouse space? I'm not familiar with Boston by no means but back in Atlanta one could rent warehouse space for late night activities. (I'd seen lots of local bands performing in gutted floor space downtown) Like last year it could be a BYOB type atmosphere. I'm only mentioning this in case you hadn't thought of that. Otherwise I'm butting back out and stepping off of your toes. *SMILEY*

I think Hoblit's idea is a great idea, but I'm not familiar with any warehouse rentals except for storage spaces, in this city. Maybe there's something on the outskirts?
But I think it sounds like BZL is getting cool stuff together...

I don't want to butt in but would love to check out what you guys have going on.

Yah, that's the thing, if such spaces even exist, well, nobody knows about them. And I don't want to get too far out of the city; Lowell might be convenient for me, but surely not for anyone else.

Today's update:

The Saturday afternoon acoustic hoedown is confirmed, as in, check's in the mail, so I guess it's okay to make it public. Evening shows are still in the works.

It'll be:
Saturday, August 13, 3:00 to 6:00 PM, at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge. This is one of the coolest venues in the area and I think it will be a great place for this set.

For those who prefer a quieter, more intimate setting for their performance, we'll be set up here with minimal acoustic gear: probably just a couple of guitars and their piano, plus whatever simple percussion I can scratch up. If you want to BYOB (bring your own banjo) that is fine. I have one artist confirmed for this and I'd like to get a few more set so I can write up something for the gallery's publicity stuff. If you are interested, send me a PM.

Wow, that's random. I saw my friends' band Benchwarmer play there five years ago:

It was a cool place, but pretty small, especially because people were trying not to knock into/over the art.

I'm still in. I'll be purchasing a couple really big items in the near future, and a 'needs' list for this show would help me decide the order of said purchases.

Specifically bass, guitar, and keyboard. The keyboard will be first, but I'd rather not bring that if possible. I'm sure guitars will be in no shortage, so I think a badass bass might find its way up there with me.

They claim capacity about 75; the owner told me yesterday that our date is between art exhibitions so maybe that will help some. Or maybe it will make it worse because there won't be any cool art to look at, who knows. Needs ought to be minimal-- don't expect to have to do any long-distance travelling with a big instrument, unless you really want to bring it along and play it. I have a keyboard which is apparently good enough to gig with (COME SEE BEN GIG WITH IT NEXT THURSDAY) and the same bass that most folks used in Austin, so the things to focus on are probably the more unusual instruments. My mandolin sucks, for example, and while I can probably borrow a banjo I wouldn't bank on it at this point. That sort of thing.

Actually, the most important things that I don't already own personally are a nice acoustic/electric and a drum kit. Someone ought to be able to scare up the former, though, and I may just buy a kit myself and sell the electronic kit that I've been using. I've been kind of meaning to do that anyways, so we'll see what happens.

I'll have a message board up in the next day or so with a needs list, and more.

I'm planning my set to work on ONE guitar. If a Strat, Tele, Les Paul, SG, 335, or anything in the neighborhood of 'normal electric guitar (no Peaveys for fuck's sake)' is available, I should be fine (I'd prefer a strat, but if there's a Les Paul and a decent amp, I won't need a bass player

). I'd like to have a distortion/clean pedal available, whether that be an amp pedal or an actual dist. pedal.

Oh, and I may hop to a keyboard or bass, depending on what I write in the next couple weeks.

Also, I don't remember anything about any of the gear at Austin (except Sean's horrible A/E

), but I don't think it'd hurt to have a really high-end bass there (American Jazz or Ibanez SRX500, I can't decide). I DO plan on bringing 'the funk,' as it were.

I could bring my Squier. I also have a really nice Ibanez electric/acoustic now but I wouldn't trust its case to withstand the trauma of air flight. I'll probably bring my Oxygen8, in case anyone needs an extra MIDI controller for whatever reason, but I think Fred will be sitting this one out (unless someone really wants C64 sounds in their set).

I have a Gibson Hummingbird Acoustic, with a custom installed LR Baggs pickup that I use for regular acoustic gigs, I may be willing to share it if I show up.

But it's the most expensive thing I own, and my broke ass may even be selling it by then. If not, I can bring a dobro and a little tube amp. I play a mean dobro.

And bzl which band are you at Great Scott on the 23rd? I used to play there all the time, before it was taken over by "the Allston Plan" and that guy Carl.

We're probably gonne bring one or two Ovation 6 strings, maybe some other stuff, I'm not sure. But we're driving up, so we can fit lots of crap in the back of the car.
