So...it's the accoustic guitar/folk singer fight.

Carvan Ray: Nice. 50's vibe. I like the percussive knocks...sounds very authentic... I haven't listened to a CR song in a while... and I 'm diggin your singing. You got those cochrane/holly "yeahs!" sweet. Very swampy feel. I like it.

HillBilly: Not bad. It's got a good vibe, and a sensitive, tender vocal style. It's not compelling to me... probably because this style doesn't usually interest me. Vocals seem to spike in dynamics in odd spots... I wonder if you smoothed it out a bit (compression, limiting, something else?) if it would lose the laid back sensitivity though?

Jonathan Mann: Fun sounding. Wow. Gonna have to listen to these three songs in a row again...they sound like they come from the same album..."folk singers of Songfight: Compliation # 17 " . This tune has a mellow vibe..it kinda spikes up and down in a dynamic way that isn't musical as much as it is... spiky. Good job, but I didn't get sucked into this one.

Lonbobby: I like the creepy vibe to this one. Some cool sounds. is it an optional challenge to use accoustic guitar tracks in this fight? Did I miss the memo? So far, my fav of the ones I've heard, cause the groove and feel is great. Very musical piece too. Production is good. A good blend of the mellow trip with some freaky post-modern (almost portisheady) things. I liked it. CONTENDER

MaxTheCat: I really enjoy maxthecat stuff. I was a little lost when this one started. It's too narrative...but then the singing comes in, and I welcome the shift. Cool percussion track... "cosmic dance"...ugh. That lyric turned me off... but after that, I feel like I'm listening to Zappa if he had embraced Laurie Anderson for a night of passion and accidental pregnancy. Then, John Hiatt shows up to hit us with the chorus. That's what I'm getting here....Zappa did Anderson and Hiatt's the crazy drunk uncle spouting off ... I liked it.

...Ok seriously. Did I miss some memo here?

Noah McLaughlin: Acoustic guitar. Why do many reviewers pick on the accoustic guitar/vocal trip so much? Simple. Because, like the blues, it's easy to imitate, but it's so hard to use this simple medium and make it really speak and work. I hear things in this that don't do it for me...namely timing flubbs and tuning issues... The vibe is ok, but this song doesn't do anything for me.

Ok. I'm not fucking kidding now. Where's the goddamn memo? Why were we not informed? Is this a freakin conspiracy?

The NutWalls: So far, this is the best accoustic guitar trip here on folkfight...I like the percussion bits.. man, the whole guitar/boy thing is so hit and miss for me... on your lead bit, you hit this goofy note..and yet, it just makes it better for somereason... like the reaching for something is worth the reaching, even if you miss. The last vocal bit...kinda out of tune in a painful way. Not bad, I didn't mind this.

The Rant: Hello Violent Femmes. Fun energy...and ok sound. The song itself...it's ok. Nothing about it screams vote for me, or whoa, an artistic experience..

rogueretard: I liked this one. It was fun. Not vote fun. But fun. Bass line is interesting. The guitar is kinda bland. I have no idea what the hell your talking about, but it's got energy. And it's boppy. Good.

SetFire:
Well, clearly you got the memo. The idea is good, although I don't think you quite realized it as much as you could have. The laid back vibe with a hint of the cure/british alternative wave whatever you want to call it is almost working. The poduction needs work... but that kind of stuff develops over time. You know, I like to think..If I covered this song, or produced another version, could it be better? Is the core song worth the work? This one seems like it could really go places. The solo, while not properly executed, has good ideas for tone and direction.

BoonLiver: Mike said..."play a groove that's like sippin lemonade on the porch in the summer"... thus it began. I really like this tune. Sometimes you do a songfight, and you hear stuff from others that knocks your socks off, you know you've been bested. Not this time. I really like this tune.. it's always a pleasure working with mr. smalltown. yeah... I really like it.

<b>Boon Liver</b>
+++ Funky groove. Nice flow +++
--- A little too light on melodic content. It's all the same chromatic crap over and over. ---
+++ "I never do the things I always say I'm gonna do." I totally feel you on the lyrics +++
CONTENDER

<b>Caravan Ray</b>
+++ I am a big fan of Mr. Ray. Very few people are as wickedly humorous in their approach, and adventurous. You will always have fun listening to his songs. And then you'll be surprised at that one little touch - like this AM radio solo that just came in. +++
CONTENDER

<b>Hillbilly</b>
+++ "bathroom wall" = original +++
--- "bad to the bone" = played out ---
+++ The sound fo this guitar is really good. How did you mic it? I always enjoy a good pervert tale +++

<b>Jonathan Mann</b>
--- You're not actually stoned enough to sound so flat. Major intonation issues. ---

<b>Lonbobby</b>
--- Eiffel 65 ---

<b>Max the Cat</b>
+++ This is very interesting and novel +++
--- This is very cheesy, especially that MIDI brass sound ---
+++ Backing vocals +++

<b>Noah McLaughlin</b>
--- Timing, tone, tuning, timing again ---
+++ Chords in the chorus. Fingerpicking part when the drums cut out. +++
///Just like on Crossroads, the drum doesn't really match up with the rest of the song. I'm pretty sure you don't use a click track, so it's strange how that happens. I think you really need to go back and examine those beats, probably drop some of the kick drums. Oh, and get some better drum sounds... try http://naturalstudio.co.uk/sampled.html And a little bit of presence on the vocals would help too, use a notch somewhere around 10khz. ///

<b>The Nutwalls</b>
--- Intonation. ---
/// Bongo sounds off. ///
+++ A decent song, and overall a pretty good recording. Nice mix. +++

<b>Rant</b>
+++ Fun. "Maybe I could pimp some girls out too" +++
--- Intonation. And some crappy phrasing, like when you say the word "worry" ---

<b>Rogue Retard</b>
+++ Good production. Interestiong bassline. +++
--- Annoying retard vocals. Rip-off of Teen Girl Squad. ---

<b>Set Fire</b>
--- suckage ---

Not just that, it's a cover of "I think I have a chance with this guy" off of Strong Bad Sings. And as is mentioned...

HillBilly: A real Tony Joe White thing going on here. Why did the title ‘Chance’ inspire both you and me to do a sleazy blues song? Whatever. I like this a lot – good lyrics (what I could understand), good vocals, good song.

Jonathan Mann: This is really good. Nice lazy sounding guitar and vocals. The backing vocals are ultra sloppy, but very cool.

Lonbobby: Well put together – but really not to my personal taste, sorry.

MaxTheCat: Wow – amazing lyrics. They do place you in great danger of coming across sounding like a pretentious twat – but the conviction in your voice is great, and you pull it off beautifully. Very impressive.

Noah McLaughlin: “I woke up this morning…” – not a good start. And it doesn’t really get better. A bit too sloppy – and sloppy in a bad way.

The NutWalls: Nice Dylan-esque vocals. Are you the Nut who asked for singing tips? True – you go a little off here and there, but you’ve got a good voice to work with - so a little effort and practice and you’ll be fine. Overall – very good song

The Rant: Awesome! This is exactly the sort of song I want to listen to.

rogueretard: I love this – the vocals are wonderful. I’d like to hear it go longer. Apparently it’s a cover though – shame.

SetFire: I don’t think I’d like this song even if it was better recorded.

BoonLiver: Points off for the wanky ‘waka-waka’ guitar – that sound should only be used in porn movie soundtracks. Great lyrics and vocals though – that telephone-sounding “chances never come” bit is very good. I like the song a lot – but you are guilty of extended solo and ‘waka-waka’ guitar crimes.

And…

Caravan Ray: Last minute effort thrown together on Sunday arvo – but I’m very happy with how it turned out. Thanks to my daughter for lending me some of her toys for the percussion. Stuff drum machines – I’m using oversized Lego blocks, the twisty-clicky toy and the back of a ukulele all the time in future. If you listen closely you will hear guest backing vocals by my dog, The Chief.

Very high quality fight.

HillBilly, Boon Liver and the Nutwalls were all first class. Max the Cat and Jonothan Mann came very close to getting votes. Rogueretard would have been a contender if it was longer (and not a cover) – but cream of the crop was The Rant – great stuff – have a vote

Or ... points ON for using it, because maybe we ARE making porn—but for the MIND. I dared Leaf—nay, double dared, I believe—him to come up with a solo that pushed it as long as possible. I wanted to see if the chances WOULD come—if I would finally get around to doing the things I said I would while he was laying down a fly solo—I didn't.

If Boon Liver ever does this tune live, I will stalk the stage wild-eyed and ornery, daring the chances to show their faces. I will bounce with the bass, kick with the drums and get my elbows up with gtr. Personally, I love this song.

Cheers.

Caravan Ray

I read your lyrics before I heard the tune, and I laughed out loud. This is a great tune, and pretty full sounding for basically two gtrs and vox. That little shaker/guiro thing fits nicely, great timing. Great tune.

Hillbilly

Slightly muddy, production, and still slightly close to the mic with the vox. There seems to be a lot of hiss that comes in with the backing vox, too. Funky little groove, though, and good chorus—as short as it is.

Jonathan Mann

I like your voice. “I hadn’t yelled your name or found out you liked the Cure” is a great line; other great ones, too. Really good sound. I like the chorus, but I don’t like the low “whoa whoa whoas” in my left ear. The lead vox seem to get slightly lost when all the others kick in during the chorus.

Lonbobby

Nice mix of organic and electronica sounds. I’m really not crazy about vocoded vox, but that’s a personal thing. It’s not really my style, though.

Max the Cat

Not many people really dig spoken word like this; I do. Your voice could be louder. When you’re singing during the chorus, it seems like the music should be suddenly more organic, especially at the “Who writes the music ...” part.

Noah McLaughlin

There are really rough timing issues when the drums come in that make it very tough to listen to. I don’t think the drums would add anything everything was in time, though.

The Nutwalls

Good production. The vocals sound like they might be slightly higher than a range you’re comfortable with, but not overly so. Percussion is maybe slightly too loud. I like the solo.

The Rant

I’d like to hear you sing higher, and with a little more feeling. This is good, reminiscent of the Dead Milkmen. Some good lines. Great little break at about 1:40. The quick breaks before the chorus is great. Sets it up nicely.

Rogue Retard

The bass and drum groove is good, I’m not sure about the guitar. But the vocals! Holy shit. I laughed the whole time. The most brilliant stupid lyrics I’ve ever heard, Wow.

Set Fire

I keep hearing a popping, but I can’t figure out what it is. There are some bad timing issues, and I think the singer is too close to the mic.

Boon Liver

Leaf and Me. I'm particularly proud of this and had a lot of fun doing the vox—with my six year old son sitting on the floor next to me. I wonder what he thinks of his old man sometimes. Then again, he's the one with the mohawk, not me.

Quick reviews -

Keepers were Boon Liver, Caravan Ray, and Lonbobby.

BL reminded me of a CD called "Far Edges" by Graham Moses. Unfortunately, I think it's almost impossible to find unless you already have a copy... liked the song, and I loved the guitar solo.

CR, made me think of the "lime in the coconut" song - have they introduced lime Coke over there, too? Liked the song.

Lonbobby, liked the overall sound, lyric didn't grab me.

Noah McLaughlin, a contender until the rhythm stuff started up; Nutwalls, a contender until the backing vocals came in.

Others just didn't strike me, for whatever reasons.

Vote for Boon Liver, for an interesting song and performance and a kickin' guitar solo.

Boon Liver – listen again. Should have finished at 3.55 – a great groove – good use of telephone filter …

Caravan Ray – A little too much pastiche a little too little imagination – but very good for what it is – a kind of Cochran meets Cramps groove. Some lovely, subtle background ambience brings it up a notch but still a little bit of an exercise?

Hillbilly – I find your voice a little difficult to get used to  Actually this is pretty but it feels like a bit of an exercise, especially at ‘bad to the bone’ – ‘lady’, ‘liquor store’ – it’s like a shorthand to a particular mood. So I’m not feeling it. Plus the hiss is a bit distracting the way it comes and goes. Good, though.

Jonathan Mann – I like this. Not sure about the longeivity of references to the Cure and the like. I like the concept of the lyric a lot. Suffers from comin after two similar acoustic numbers in the stream. The insanity of the backing vocals makes me happy. ‘Blah Blah Blah’indeed  The melody of the verse sounds familiar but I can’t place it so maybe it’s just actually quite catchy …. About 40 seconds too long, but I like.

‘Bobby – sweet. I love it when you sing. There is something authentically robotic about your phrasing. I like the arrival of guitar (samples?) in your work. This is utterly depressing and all the better for it ….

Max the Cat – this is fucking awesome.

Noah – what a lovely melody – shame the drums don’t suit the tempo – this would be wonderful without, and trimmed to 2.30ish ….. that intro before the drums kicked in blew me away

Nutwalls – pretty melody – vocals are nice but the backing vocs aren’t matching up too well at all – I want more punk. This would work with a nice punky backdrop instead of what is basically an acoustic folk thang …

Rant – oh well Nutwalls – this is what I meant by being a bit more punky. This is sweet enough only it needs a bit more of a grind to get my loins moist .. but pretty sweet all the same

Rogue Retard – same review as always – great music, the joke of the ‘hilarious simpleton’ wears thin within, oh, about 20 seconds, and seeing as this isn’t your first entry, you have no excuse. You wouldn’t have a chance with me

Set Fire – Pretty. Pretty well done. Nice mix. Pretty enough vocal. Pretty much passed me by, unfortunately. Sorry, my attention span is bleeding …. I like ‘I can’t reach my target’ a lot, mind …. Way too long!

Can’t see past Max the Cat this week

boon

started out slow, i really liked how the vocals sped the song up.
for me, this might have benefitted from a more melodic chorus. it's not
quite p-funky enough to hold my attention, but it's got a definite groove.
really picks up around 2:20, wish it had done that at 0:40. cool solo,
nice bass groove.

hillbilly

i like the lyrics a lot. what's up with the hiss that comes in at 0:44?
the mic for your backup vocal? some additional intstrumentation would have
set this off, but it's pretty darn good for "guy+guitar"

jonathan

otherwise, a great song, but the chorus is really disjointed and dissonant,
imo. if it'd had been more in key, this would have really been an everly
brothers classic. I'm pretty sure the chorus was done as you intended though,
I guess I'm not clear what you were aiming for.

lonbobby

do you belive in life after love? i do, because I sure hear that effect
on your vocals. this is a really nice song, lots of interesting things
going on. i think it could really do with a bit of EQ or compression on the
piano around 0:50. for some reason this song really grabs me, just wish that
piano was a little less rude in my headphones. really nice work!

max

ugh, is that a ring modulator at the beginning? i hate ring modulators. that's
ok, though, because the rest of the song is pretty sweet. spoken word stuff
really isn't my thing, but this was really well done. kudos.

nutwalls

us. one of these days i'll learn to sing.

rant

vocals are really lost in the mix. not sure what the little pause around 1:30
is. good song though, nice job.

rogue

agh! nice music, but the vocals made me want to ... i dunno, something
involving fluid. yuck.

setfire

ok, you have a great song here, but at 0:20-0:28 there's a really
bad popping/thumping thing. you kind of lose the timing at 0:50. i hear a lot
of pick noise on the guitar, you might consider micing it closer to the
sound hole. the backup vocals are out of tune, but so am I. this is a great
effort, and I really hope you keep playing and submitting. out of all the
songs for this fight, this is the one that i keep coming back to. nice
job, i hope to hear more from you.

caravan

interesting dynamics on the vocals, i like the singing a lot. cool percussion.
the washboard effect.. is that a socket wrench? it's got an interesting
metallic sound. the guitars are very driving for a slow paced song, nice
arrangement. was there any particular reason you didn't add a bass track?
i think it might have benefitted from some additional lower end.

noah

nice arpeggiation at the beginning, but when the percussion comes in there
seems to be some problems getting the timing together. the guitars seem a
bit loud in the mix to me. when it's just the lead vocal and the arpeggiated
guitar, it sounds great, very peter murphy-esque quality to the singing.
unfortunately, adding the additional guitar, percussion and vocals made
this feel a little too "busy" for my taste. would have liked it to stay
simple and clear.

Hey Nut#2 . . .

You said my vocals were lost in the mix . . . maybe it was the system you were listening to the song on. It sounds fine coming through my monitors and even my crappy computer speakers . . . I wonder what it could be . . . maybe my ears are shot.

man, acoustic fight indeed!

<b>Boon Liver</b>
- awesome groove
- cool word play in the lyrics; i like the take on the title
- the middle section finally rocks out, but needs to do so more assertively and sustain it

<b>Caravan Ray</b>
- sounds like you had a lot of fun recording this
- the relentless "-ake it" rhymes are a bit too much
- seems like this song should be a lot fun, but i don't get the groove

<b>Hillbilly</b>
- there's some annoying hiss in the background
- interesting guitar groove; i really like it
- like so much GnG, it's doesn't go anywhere musically

<b>Jonathan Mann</b>
- interesting idea for chorus, but some of those backing vox are out of tune
- i like the verse melody
- this song could use some drums (look, there's some percussion at the end...)

<b>Lonbobby</b>
- promising opening
- kicks in with the drums at just the right moment
- i really like the vocal melody

<b>Max the Cat</b>
- very cool; love the lyric idea
- love the musical build at the building
- the repetition of "is all just chance" get to be a bit much by the end, though

<b>Noah McLaughlin</b>
- good arrangement; like the vocal harmonies
- i can't play in time

<b>Rogue Retard</b>
- what was that? weird.

<b>Set Fire</b>
- vox are way too low in the mix
- ... and maybe that's a good thing; you need to work on your intonation
- interesting percussion
- clipping! ow! bad!

<b>The Nutwalls</b>
- the vocal "melody" is pretty monotonous, and at times out of tune
- i like the guitar riff, but it seems very familiar
- the opening arpeggio in the solo needs to be cleaning

<b>The Rant</b>
- the music seems so upbeat; it clashes with the really sinister lyrics
- would have liked a solo rather than the "unhs"
