I did a search for "scrobbler" and didn't see anything on the boards, so I figured I'd post about this.

You download a plugin for whatever third party mp3 player you use and it sends id3 tags on files you listen to straight to the AS database where they calculate things about your listening tastes and link you to people with similar taste. Interestingly, you tend to not share that much in taste with people so it provides you with a list of music you don't listen to that you might like. It seems a lot like the Amazon "people who bought this" feature, but it's based off of actual listens instead of perhaps uninformed purchases. A lot of Song Fighters are on it, and you can also keep track of how many AS users listen to your band.
AS is closely linked to http://www.last.fm/ which is also awesome. It creates a playlist out of music you've listened to recently assuming they have that music on file and the artist's permission to share it and any user can listen to your last.fm playlist. It's a good way to find about music, or listen to things without picking out individual tracks. You can even just listen to your own station if you don't feel like making a playlist. Good times.
edit: whoa. 30 minutes ago, Gert had 2 listeners and I was Number 2. They're at 7 now. That was fast.
