March Of The Penguins (La marche de l'empereur)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0428803/
This is an insanely adorable documentary. It basically follows these penguins for a year while they go about making more penguins. It's just such a good film.
It's perfect for kids because, y'know, fluffy penguins doing silly things like slipping on the ice is pretty cute. And then it's perfect for couples because the love and dedication these penguins have for one another is very sweet. And it had tiny baby penguins, what's bad about that?
For 90 minutes it's a nice afternoon film. I wouldn't spend peak time ticket prices, but I'd still encourage you all to see it.
Although watch when they show the dead baby penguins. It's right after a cute 5 minute segment of all these little chicks frolicking in the snow and falling over and doing cute stuff to chirpy, bouncy music. Then it goes right into death :/ But then it gets happy again. So all is good.
I really want a penguin now though.

Um. Probably not the best idea (unless you fish a lot)Bjam wrote:I really want a penguin now.
There is a book called 'The worst journey in the World' written by Apsley Cherry-Garrard who was on Scott's expedition to the Antarctic in 1911. He travelled for a month to Cape Crozier and collected the first Emperor Penguin egg...
A fantastic read.

No you don't. They tend to be pretty noisy, cranky and smelly little creatures. Unfortunately, they are far more charming on the big screen than they are in real life. Sort of like Russel Crowe.Bjam wrote:

Dunedin, NZ and Kangaroo Island SA are good places to go if you really want to get up close and personal with them. (penguins that is - not Russel Crowe)
I once watched 2 of them having sex. That was fun! 'Penguin-style' basically involves a lot of random wing slapping and squarking

This movie was filth. Yes penguins are cute. They aren't people. Any time a penguin did anything the movie was just like "THEY DO THIS BECAUSE THEY'RE IN LOVE. AND DEDICATED TO EACH OTHER." penguins aren't humans! why be so quick to ascribe emotions to their actions! what about darwin! anyway it was filth. dumb movie. hard to watch because everything's just so god-damn sappy and retarded and shit. cute footage though

I'm bringing a mirror to SFLive to see if you have a soul. What's so far-fetched about the love thing, seeing as love is one of nature's greatest ways of keeping a pair of animals (this includes humans) "dedicated to each other" long enough to assure the survival of their offspring? Sounds pretty freakin' Darwin-y to me.mkilly wrote:This movie was filth. Yes penguins are cute. They aren't people. Anyway, the movie was sappy and overly cute, and I loved it. Saw it twice.

all right, I was overly dramatic there. but I really found the narration mostly unbearable BS. I came in expecting a documentary with a lot of science about how they live, and was shown a documentary with a lot of soap operatics and cheese. The long pillages, and the eggs freezing and breaking, are all framed in terms not of science but of emotion. that's fine, but it's more fit for kids than it is for teens and adults with analytic minds, imo.Puce wrote:I'm bringing a mirror to SFLive to see if you have a soul. For people who liked this movie I recommend Animals are Beautiful People, by Jamie "Gods Must Be Crazy" Uys.
If you hate humorous anthropomorphizations slyly aimed at pointing out how people are just like animals (and NOT the other way around) then you'd loath it.

We got to see this on DVD while we were in California. Definitely enjoyed it, I guess I can see where Killy is coming from but I'm not so bothered by that.
Man, "Gods Must Be Crazy" - used to watch that a lot with my Mom, when I was younger, and I just got I & II for her recently ... have to sit down and watch with her next time I visit.
