this movie is wonderful. the story is a simple little, well-crafted story. it was quite humorous and heartwarming. visually, beautiful. just as i expected.

the songs were good, but they weren't as memorable as in nightmare before christmas. not a big thing, though.

it was also a bit shorter than i expected it to be, much shorter than nightmare.

comparisons aside, this film is just marvelous.

I wasn't into it. I went in with high expectations, having just watched Nightmare Before Christmas in preparation, and I found this movie gorgeous but boring. It was very simple, there wasnâ€™t much conflict, and I didnâ€™t like some aspects of the story (although Burton canâ€™t be blamed for that, as this is based on a Russian folktale). The only characters I liked were Pastor Galswells and the titular Bride. Whereas the musical numbers were the heart and soul of Nightmare, here they felt tacked on, as they did pretty much nothing to advance the story. So, high technical marks, but I wish I had brought a pillow. C

in a response to Puce's observations...

I don't think they tried to sell this movie as a 'musical' as you'll note that there are considerably less songs and no reprises. The songs told only a little bit of the story whereas in 'nightmare' (My favorite movie of all time btw) they told just about the WHOLE STORY in song. I mean, you can actually get the whole story from the soundtrack. (which I love) With that said, I agree about the songs (excepting the one that did tell the story of the corpse bride that Danny E. sings himself) They weren't nearly as memorable or as entertaining as 'nightmares'. Even on their own with no comparisons, I'd still have to agree. I think the fact that they weren't the focus this time around...I can personally forgive it.

I loved the story. It was almost Disney. It was a very simple plot that was so easily figured out halfway through the movie. I can't help think that it was on purpose. The fact that it was still entertaining even though you knew the eventual outcome (to a point) was what makes this movie.

Notice that I agree with you on your points? I think it's just my reaction that is different really.

Something I noticed about the movie that reminded me a bit of Beatle Juice was the 'gags'. There were a lot of gags. (warning, posssible spoilers?) Jaw drop, litterally? Second hand shop? there were a few others. Cute little gags that made you chuckle around the corners.

I enjoyed the movie...but not as much as some of his others. This movie is still better than a ton of movies out there.

i'd agree with this, considering that they played songs from nightmare... on the commercials. i wasn't expecting the songs to be as good.

I give it a C. Aside from many of the visuals being rather nice, I felt like everything else was recycled from Nightmare. The songs were mediocre, like Elfman just dug up the sketches of the stuff that didn't get into Nightmare, and the story was too predictable.
