Attack of the Song Skirmish!

Post by Spud »

I put this over here so those G4TV guys wouldn't find it so easily.

Here's the basic deal (read more about it in the AOTS review thread):

It's true, your beloved fightmasters, jb and spud, are appearing on G4TV's "Attack of the Show" on Wednesday, September 28, live at 4pm pst (7pm est). We're flying down there in the morning.

Well, one of the things that they plan on doing is having a caller give us a song title on the air. We (me and jb) are supposed to go in the green room and write the song, and come back later in the show and play it.

Here's the deal. YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

We have made a special site over at songhole (again so they won't find it so easily), where you can find the song title even if you don't get G4TV and write the song at the same time. The catch is you will only have about a half an hour, so we're pretty much talking improv here. There will be a submission form that comes alive once the title is announced, so check here for the status:

http://www.songhole.org/g4tv

Now, that site will be doing a lot of funny things today, Tuesday, because I am still testing it. But tomorrow it will be live, and you will be able to upload your songs. Keep in mind that the title will be given out shortly after 4pm pdt (7pm edt), and we will want to bring up the site listing your songs at around 4:45 (7:45), so no dilly-dallying. You have to work fast.

We hope to surprise those tv people with all your songs, so don't tell them!

This is my son's favorite channel. I'll be a hero in his eyes if I can do this in the 45 minutes allowed. (Well I'm already a hero in his eyes, this will just solidify it) I would be a diety of some sort if it were to be played, which I'm not even counting on finishing on time but I'll try. He's already set the DVR to record the show regardless of the outcome. Congrats to you and JB for a hell of a marketing coup. This doen't mean you guys are going Hollywood on us does it?

Hey, are there any issues with trying to record some music tonight and then trying to get the lyrics to fit? It probably wouldn't be fair to Spud and JB because they have to do theirs in 45 minutes. But I don't use DAW and all the loops and stuff available to others either. Thoughts?

I'm thinking that's a big no. It sorta loses the integrity of the idea behind SongFight. Even though the time limit is ridiculously short.

So make a short song.

I think most musicians here don't use pre-made loops. Am I wrong in thinking that?

I haven't participated in a SongSkirmish before, but I'm thinking that if you spent 2 or 3 hours working something up tonight, and the 45 minutes laying vox on it tomorrow, it's gonna sound obviously like that when compared against anyone else who started from scratch at 45 minutes... I'm going to adhere to the time limit, just to see what I can rustle up.

OK, you lost me. I Googled it and came up with nothing relavant.

Well I don't know. Maybe loops is the wrong thing to say. I hear people talk about "Fruity Loops" and other beat / melody making type software. Maybe I just don't understand that stuff enough to speak about it intelligently but it seems like a leg up on what I use.

At any rate, I'll try to manage something. Hell I can't finish something in a week. I have no idea what makes me think I'll get this done in 45 minutes or less.

For me, at least, it takes less time to do all live tracks than it does to do a fully sequenced arrangement. I'll probably just do rhodes and voice for mine.

Hurdy gurdy!

"Hurty gurty", which is actually spelled "hurty gerty", is the term for a physical or emotional attack on a group that contains exactly six members.

For example, in the ninth episode of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles radio play series, Splinter [not Shredder --edit], Casey Jones, and the turtles are sneaking through an alley, when they're spotted by Shredder and a few of the Foot, who are on the rooftops. Shredder chuckles and says, "Time for a big hurty gerty," and the Foot begin leaping into the alleyway.

30 - 45 mins HAHAAHAHAHA

I never get done in a week so this would be real hard.

Only thing is tho, is your server gonna handle the load. come 4:30 everyone is gonna start to upload to get em there before the 4:45 deadline... will it work if there are maybe like 10 cats all uploading at the same time, or will it take so long as none of em get through, etc.etc.
Tho Im sure it will deal with it,

Im gonna try to do this tho Ill probly not finish, hahah and if i do its gonna be G'n'G or summat.
Does ca$hpoint know about this, and someone should deffinatley PM the Wreckdom crew,

and DoTellPhunt that 20 min epics just are not appropriate for the time available

Dude. If I can escape work in time, I'm all over this. I haven't written a song in less than 60 minutes since Crazy Crazy Monkey though. Looking forward to it!

i won't be available unfortunately, but as spud refers to, we've had songskirmishes before where we recorded a song in an hour and then reviewed/voted... it's a real challenge especially when you take 15 minutes off of it :)
good luck, guys! we're taping the show!
