THAT'S A WINDOWS THING. IF YOU HAVE A MAC, SHIFT ALWAYS MEANS CAPS. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S A GOOD THING OR NOT. IT'S REALLY WHAT YOU'RE COMFORTABLE WITH.tviyh wrote:BUT YOU DO RAISE AN INTERESTING POINT: USUALLY THE PRONOUN "I" WOULD BE TYPED AS SHIFT+I. BUT IF YOU HAVE CAPS LOCK ON AND TYPE SHIFT+I YOU WOULD GET "i". HMMMMMM.
NO DOUBT WE ARE ALL UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT SOME OF THESE MOST BOTHERSOME ISSUES, BUT THANK GOD THERE'S A DAY WHEN IT'S OK TO DISCUSS THEM OPENLY, WITHOUT SHAME.

my capslock light is lit but my words aren't coming out in caps. this is because i use ucontrol to make my capslock key useful on the other 364 days of the year.
if i were typing this on my mac mini i wouldn't even have the capslock light lit because osx 10.4 finally has modifier key remapping built-in.
but believe me when I say my capslock key is "on" right now.

i don't disable capslock outright, i turn it into another ctrl key. back in the good old days, ctrl used to be where capslock is now and vice-versa. since i'm a programmer i use the ctrl key a lot and i also have carpal tunnel syndrome and so by putting ctrl where capslock goes these days it reduces a lot of strain on my wrists.
at least i am keeping in the spirit of the holiday by having my capslock light on and not using the shift key to make capital letters.

I'm glad I caught this right before it turned midnight here. It would have been a shame to totally miss it. But I'm also sort of glad it's over... even though, it will be hard to resist hitting cap lock again when I look back fondly at those warm times.

WHAT DAY IS IT? I HAVEN'T MISSED IT? THE SPIRITS HAVE DONE IT ALL IN ONE NIGHT!
(Seriously, WHY do caps look SO obnoxious? My Apple II+ only had caps and it NEVER seemed to SHOUT at me. But MAN it's hard not to HATE people who USE THEM TOO MUCH!)

Well, on the Apple II (and most other computers of that vintage, for that matter), everything was in caps. It's only in the mid-80s that people started getting computers which could do both caps and lowercase at the same time, and even then a lot of time was spent in caps-only (especially on the C64, where you could either have caps and symbols, or lowercase and caps, and anyway shifted letters meant different things than non-shifted in C64 BASIC).
Anyway, as the price on IBM PCs dropped and people started using their computers for more serious purposes (such as word processing), proper capitalization became more important, and over time, all-caps came to mean YELLING REALLY LOUD.
So, since everything was in all-caps, it didn't stand out. But now that mixed-case is the norm, anything all-caps stands out a lot.
Most comic strips still use all-caps lettering, though (it's not just a matter of convention — in printed comics, the lettering is usually small enough that all-caps is more readable) and in that context it's still okay-looking.
OKAY CONSOLIDATION TIME. I think the problem with all-caps in forums etc. is that it's all-caps standing out in the middle of mixed-case.

probably because the people that use all caps are generally trying to get you to tell them your bank account info.Mostess wrote: (Seriously, WHY do caps look SO obnoxious? My Apple II+ only had caps and it NEVER seemed to SHOUT at me. But MAN it's hard not to HATE people who USE THEM TOO MUCH!)
fight the all caps! type all in lowercase instead!
