Pandora!
Pandora!
There was some commotion across the internet a while ago about Pandora, a music "search engine" that tells you what songs you might like, based on songs you tell it you already like. It was somewhat shunned because of its $10 monthly price tag.
However!
It has now been made free to use (ad-supported, natch, but as far as I can tell, they haven't actually implemented the ads yet), and generates radio stations based on songs/bands you tell it to base them on. I'm loving it so far, and heartily reccomend the stations "The American Analog Set," "The Arcade Fire," and "Dirty Dozen Brass Band."

There used to be a service like this a couple of years ago called Sonicnet. But then VH1 ate it up.
I've been digging this so far. I put in Rasputina and it introduced me to Noe Venable and played some Magnetic Fields. It missed the mark other times (like playng Deadweight) but that's understandable Rasputina is hard to pigeonhole. Between this and Hype Machine, I have a plethora of things to listen to.

i tried this a while back, but i can't really stream a lot of data from work.
it's kinda neat, though. i put in jazz butcher, and it did indeed give me stuff that was kinda similar.

Noe Venable has opened for Ani DiFranco and They Might Be Giants. I got to see her open for the latter. I really liked her song "Feral," which she hadn't finished at that point. I didn't like it enough to buy the album when it eventually came out, though.

Well, now the ads are implemented, but on the other hand you can now make a station called "heuristics inc" (I sent them a few cds, and they recently added "Your domestic problems are completely solved").
