Peaches rocks, and she'll kill you if you say different.
The Donnas rock, but they're not very good.
Is Bikini Kill still around?
Courtney Freaking Love, insane though she may be, ROCKS.

I love Laurie Anderson <i>more than any of you</i>, but I'm not about to claim that she "rocks". And Enya? Let's not make lists of females in music. I believe the thread's title is "Girls Who Rock". Hmph.

Like the girl from my sig line, for instance. She rocks my world, but that's not the same as "rocking".

But it's so hard to resist listing my faves!

Well, alright then... strictly speaking, ROCKing from my above list is only
GF, Q, and DD... I could debate the others, but that would be boring.

Adding also:

Enon
Blonde Redhead
Annie Lennox

And how could I forget Le Tigre? (First album only for me...)

all awesome Aus female singers and songwriters.
I don't really think any Aus female singers and songwriters have really rocked since Chrissy Amphlett of The Divinyls. She totally rocked.

Uncontested. But as far as individual songs go, consider if you will "Sharkey's Night", from her movie (NOT the soundtrack, but the movie itself) "Home of the Brave". I defy you to sit still during it.

And to me, that qualifies as "rocking".

Mates of State - they're like Quasi deluxe!

Mum - poor mans Bjork (so possibly the 2nd best band ever), also begat Mice Parade

did anyone say Azure Ray already? also Maria Taylor and Orenda Finks solo stuff is ok too.

Minnie Riperton has some cheesy stuff but Les Fleurs is incredible

The Softies/Go Sailor - part of the AGSFB connection

Hanne Hukkelberg - nice, on the Leaf Label

On!Air!Library!

Yo La Tengo

Joanna Newsom - great if you're not put off by her voice.

Jenny Choi + the 3rd shift - hit and miss[/b]

The definition of "rock" is being stretched pretty thin if you're including Mum.

Ludicra certainly rock.

Good God! How is this list missing:
The Go-Go's????? The first (only?) all-female rock band to chart a Number One Album.

Other offshoots:
The Delphines
and the latest:
(solo)Kathy Valentine

<b><strike>Bonnie Raitte</strike> [CENSORED]</b> [YW --Admin] (sp) on the list
nor Annie Lennox

Fabulous Disaster had a very good PUNK first album.

Feist

4 Non-Blondes

To The Moon Alice

Joan Osbourne

Autout de Lucie

Let me second Ani Difranco and Tori Amos

Indigo Girls (best live shows after Ani)

Lords of Acid

Kitty

Portishead

Telepopmusik

Suzanne Vega

Sheryl Crow's second, eponymous, album ("Tuesday Night Music Club" isn't all that bad, either, but then it goes down hill)

I've censored the name [CENSORED] in protest of her cover of "Burning Down the House".

Ani Difranco is indeed awesome and rocks, and puts on an excellent live show as well as being originally from Buffalo, which is always a good thing.

Edge reminded me of one.

The Bangels. I don't think anyone else said them. I used to have their Greatest Hits CD but I lost it!!!!

Also it's been mentioned, but Tori Amos is pretty great.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D
