Works I Adore By Artists I Otherwise Don't Care About

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

Works I Adore By Artists I Otherwise Don't Care About

Post by erik »

Inspired by this post at 5ives, I thought it would make for a fun thread. I have a vague recollection of something similar, but couldn't find the thread.

Don't tell me you like one song by a band that is basically a one-hit-wonder. Duh, we all like "War Ensemble"*. We all like "Institutionalized"*. Tell me either 1) the one song you like from a big famous artist with lots of hits, or 2) the one song you like from a band with no hits.

I really like "I Have Been Floated" by the Olivia Tremor Control, and nothing else I have heard from them.

*Okay, we all should like these songs.

Weirdly, I don't really love Cat Power... (weird only because I love other similar-genre music) ...but I do love "Cross Bones Style."

How does Slayer or the Suicidial Tendencies fit either category? We should be digging "Seasons in the Abyss" and "Nobody Hears". Or "God Save Death" and "How Will I Laugh...". Or "Angel of Death" and "Possessed To Skate"

I dunno, "War Ensemble" and "Institutionalized" seem to be the one song that people know from each of those bands. Even if it wasn't a "hit" per-se, it's the one recognizable song.

You may roll with different people, or listen to way more Slayer and Suicidal than folks I know.

odd, i would think more people would know, for example, "south of heaven" or "reign in blood", if they were familiar with only one song.

anyway... getting back on topic, is this what you are talking about erikb: all of the beach boys' really big hits, crappy surfing music, i can't stand to listen to, but "heroes and villains" is one of my favorite songs of all time. (actually i like, or at least sort of like, most of the pet sounds/smile era stuff, but mostly that song.)

My wife teases me with the brothers Gibb. I can't stand to listen to 99% of the BeeGees, but some of the more obscure songs (sorry I don't have titles) are pretty great. Sort of lush Beatles meet Genesis style stuff that no doubt never got airplay.

Yes! The one that comes to mind, for me, is "New York Mining Disaster" circa 1967. So good. Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones? ...don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide....

That one, and "I Started a Joke". Two obscure gems.

I like these two, I'm sure I'd like more on those albums (if I had 'em) but I could care less about most of the other Bee Gee's stuff.

Michael Jackson. There are plenty of songs he's done that strike me as well done, but only one I really like, and that's Human Nature.

I've never really been into The Shins, but their singer does a pretty great cover of Neil Young's "Harvest".

huh...that's one of my least favorites. Go figure. Guess that's just human nature, though.

Come to think of it...Eddie Van Halen is not someone whose work I like much at all...except for his solo on Beat It. Just struck a nerve when it came out and I still love to crank it up really really loud.

That's because Fripp hypnotized you when you studied with him. It's really the only logical explanation.

Everyone I know seems to like Toxic, and no other Britney Spears songs. I guess it's less painful than the rest.

Sarah McLachlan's cover of XTC's Dear God is blissfully sweet. Great guitar work, too. I'm not really interested in her otherwise.

Interesting, cause I was about to post that, thus confirming at least a small portion of Canadian content that agrees with your observation.

I have a remix of that tune that I dig. And my friends like to bug me about it... oh well.
