Olympics

Post by HeuristicsInc »

Is anyone watching this?
I've been really enjoying the womens' ice hockey. A bit different from mens' hockey, more finesse play. Fun!
My wife is big into figure skating, so I've seen some of that. Yesterday's pairs competition was interesting with the Chinese pair's injury and successful completion of the program. Funky judging stuff they introduced a few years back, though, so the whole sport is particularly wacky.

Did you guys see the Canada vs Italy game? It was 16-0. The Canada vs Sweden game was 8-1. Canada's just a hockey nation, what can I say?

No, I have only seen the first two USA games so far.
Unfortunately those scheduling weasels have seen fit to put all the rest of the games on weekdays, so no more watching unless it's on tape.
Poor Italy, they have yet to score a goal in the Olympics. Wow.

I watched the Canada / Sweden game while resting the morning after a gig. They look real tough. I hear Wayne's wife had 10 grand on Sweden being held scoreless.

I gotta say, I'm not really much of a Hockey fan, but the women's game is starting to up my interest in it. Like Bill said, it's more finesse and seems easier to follow. Maybe if I start to grasp the concept I can graduate to men's hockey just in time to watch the U.S. grab the gold.

ok, i gotta say this is about the stupidest, most irritating thing i've heard about the olympics.......

so where the fuck is "torino"? it's in dick ebersol's head, that's where it is. apparently, he went on vacation there a few years ago and referred to it as "torino" to his friends and family. he especially liked the way it rolled off his tongue. so when TURIN (as in the world famous shroud of turin) was chosen to host the olympics, this a-hole decides to ignore the culture of TURIN and on his own accord, decided to re-name the host city "torino", then produce millions of dollars in graphic design and advertising touting this fictious city so that he could say "well, this is what we are calling it" (NBC), obviously because he liked the way it rolled off the tongue. it doesn't hurt that he is the head of NBC sports, and has alot of clout.

obviously, he was more interested in marketing potential than culture, respect, and history. hey, "torino" sounds more italian i guess. but i think it's the biggest sham of this olympics and of course you'll hear nothing about it on good old NBC.

If you mean Wayne Gretzky's wife, I doubt it. She is already in huge trouble for a huge illegal betting ring, and they could both end up in jail. Oh Wayne oh Wayne.

I think that was a joke, roger.

Um, what? Dick Ebersole didn't make up the word "Torino". Torino is what the city is called in Italy. In other words, what all of the people who fucking live there call it. Shroud of Turin? That'll be il sudario di Torino.

I admit, it's a bit unorthodox to market the Olympics under the local name. After all, we didn't have München 1972 or whatever else. But Torino is the actual name of the city. So get irrationally pissed off about something else.

Other people think the same thing you think.

Therefore, you are correct.

yeah, uh, jack, they call rome "roma" and milan "milano" and italy "italia." the really weird one is florence vs. firenze.
for what it's worth, i can't figure out why the heck we changed the names of their towns and stuff. why not use the real names?
i think you misunderstood... the question is whether to call the olympics by the name the host country uses or by the english one. why would we use the english one, anyway? i think it's a fantastic idea. let's start using local names for everything.

I think it's pretty lame how that Chinese figure skating team got silver even when she fell and injured herself. If that happened any other year it would have been elimination.

it's pretty awesome that they could get up and finish the program, but i think they should have come in 4th and the team that was in 4th should have gotten 2nd (I think). the 3rd team deserved to do better than the crashy team.

By the way, Turin is not an english form of Torino, but Torino is an italian version of the piedmontese (dialect of the region) Turin (with the accent on the "i". Turin is a much more ancient name than Torino, all historic maps (also italian ones) have on Turin instead of Torino, and there are still people in the region that call the town Turin (with the accent on the "i"), so if they wanted to keep the original name they should have called them the Turin Olympics with the accent on the i.
if they kept he italian name for Turin, why didn't they also use the italian name for Olympics, and call them Olimpiadi diTorino?
Why don't they begin to speak italian during all the olympic period? that seems a good idea: just like the locals do!

stir it up.

Got up at 5 this morning to watch Canada take on Italy in the men's hockey. I was pleased to see Italy actually keep it remotely competitive! Good for them!

...little darling...i'll push the wood...

Speaking of wood...one of my favorite events is the Ice Luge.

God, it scares me, just look at the package moving at insane speed...one wrong move...and look who's first to the wind... t'would be better to have a little more protection, I think.

And, although I ain't talking about what may happen later on after people partake in this kind of luge, either way, it's best to have protection...

Shame there'll be no ice hockey in the upcoming Commonwealth Games - it would be nice to see Canada remotely competitive in something

frankly, i'm happy that NBC is calling it "Torino" instead of "Turin." first, just for esthetic reasons. "Torino" sounds better to my ear. secondly, i think it's a nice nod to the host city and country, a matter of respect and the cultural sharing that the Olympics are supposed to represent.

in many cases, if not most, geograhical names are changed b/c it's difficult for a native of a given language to pronounce (how many anglophones can pronounce "Moskva" or "Sankt Pyotorsbourg" without tripping over their tongues?) or because phonetics are so wildly different (i have no idea how to pronounce Beijing/Peking correctly).

the french are the worst culprits of this: Moscow/Moskva = "Moscou"; London = "Londres"; Barcelona = "Barcelone"; Beijing = "Pekin". their butchery of Greek words is a crime.

in the case of a lot of Italian place-names, i think English inherited some of the French laziness. "Torino"? easy as pie to pronounce, as is "Roma", "Venezia", "Firenze". okay, Florence is a small tongue-twister.

so, I applaud NBC for using "Torino". it doesn't really create any confusion for an English-speaking audience and it shows respect for the people of Torino.
