as gay is this is bound to sound, i've been completely floored by the talent of the figure skaters, especially the pairs. it's pretty amazing what these athletes can do. i could do without all the johnny queer drama but the other skaters, especially the russian guy, are incredible.

Well, yes, many of the winter games have a lot to do with gravity. And I totally love alpine skiing. The GS and the freestyle are my kind of competition. No, it's not about roller-derby style racing, it's one person against the mountain and the weather. Man against nature. I'm not a big team sport kind of guy (absolutely hate american football and that thing they call baseball-I admire it, mind you, I just really have no interest in such sports). Except that relay speed skating is pretty wild stuff.Caravanray wrote:Isn't all the Winter Olypics involved withith sliding down hills? (except of course for the nancy-boy ice-dancing)
That's the problem with the Winter Olympics. Any sport that involves timing how fast somebody slides down a hill is stupid.
Any sport that involves people doing tricks while they slide down a hill, or slide about on ice - and receiving some sort of subjective score out of 10 is even more stupid.
The intensity of hurling down a mountain at 85 [edit - oops, 65] miles an hour...damn! Sends chills down my spine. And pounding moguls and then pulling off an inverted 720 with a cross, then landing in moguls again before launching into a graceful helicopter only to hit yet more bumps???? Come on, that is both insane and most incredible.
But that's just my take on it. I find figure skating so kitchy its not even funny. So rare is it that any dribble of real choreography emerges, or that they ever look like they're doing ANYTHING but simplysetting up for the next "move" (I know - it aint simple at all). It's so UNgraceful and UNnatural...just like ballet. And forget about the costumes!
These are just opinions, people. But flame away

Well, it's the Olympic GAMES, not sports, I believe.
I mean, while we're on it, ANY sport/game of a competitive nature that is based on other humans rating participants irriates me.
But they are still fun to watch...although I really have no stomach for auto races. BORING.
The announcer kept going on about how this gold was Australia's first... I'm quoting a TV announcer... probably a mistake.

ah, the semantic of "game" versus "sport"? what a lovely thing.Leaf wrote:Well, it's the Olympic GAMES, not sports, I believe.
I want to watch an Olympic "drum-off" where all songfight drummers compete via drum solos. And I get to rate the participant, to judge, heavily.
We need a "musical Olympics". I want to square off against Russian metal bands.

Let me clarify:
I don't enjoy sports that rely on a rating system to provide the final score, but do enjoy sports that involve reaching an objective, like scoring, or winning a race.
Having judges is too subjective in sport, for me.
For example: I rate Sven's posts in the last while as a 3/10 for content, 1/10 for humour, 4/10 for style and 8.5/10 for asshole.
See? That type of rating is so subjective, it's hard to get an actual read on what Sven may have actually accomplished. Now, if the point was for Sven to actually achieve something of measurable merit, like, say, not being an ass, we might actually have a game here.

I uh... what?
Alls I was saying is that your quoted comment was funny/ironic in light of you being a songfighter and all (you know, a game/competition type thing where people judge other people's performance, etc..)
I wasn't trying to be an asshole, I think you're either reading more into this than there is, or you didn't get my meaning in the first place.
That's not to say that I'm not an asshole, but I wasn't being one here, I don't think... anyway. I love you, man! *hugs*

Ok.
I'm certainly in a bitchy mood, so you're right. I was reading into it wrong.
... gee, now I feel like an ass.
Welcome to Canada.
It all started with that pitiful shit effort this morning. I actually got up early to watch those bastards ....argghhhhh....
Yeah. That pretty much ruined my day. Guess I better start over.
I give you a 9/10 for reconcillitory posts and a 8/10 for pushing my day up a notch.
Cheers.

So that Italian ice skating show was tremendous. I loved the drama and rags they wore. Makes up for the whole event!

Personally, they're often a necessary evil, since there are sides of competitive sport that can not be objectively evaluated. A call will differ depending on circumstances; if a speed skater takes someone down because he violated his space (I forget the term they use) or if he is bumped by another and ends up touching the guy in front of him. The judges have to make the call as to whether he is responsible and should be disqualified (assuming he himself didn't fall).Mostess wrote:How do you feel about refs and umps? (Really just curious. Thought I'd share this with you all...I finally found the box with this stuff.
The only hockey games I've ever attended were the last two of the 1980 games. Here's the awards ceremony right after the final. The stadium was shaking so hard I was actually afraid it was going to fall apart! I think they made a movie out of this game.
The reason I was there was I was in the Olympic Orchestra.

Technically, I was in the chorus, so I only had two gigs; opening and closing ceremonies. But I had pretty much full access to the VIP sections for any event and was there every day. Certainly one of the three most emotional experiences of my life. The Moscow pin I traded for with a Russian athlete.
Here's the shell we were in for the opening. Here's Eric Hiden right after getting another gold. And the US Bobsled from a little bridge over the track! I bet you can't do that anymore.

cool to see the 1980 photos. that's awesome.
i watched some of the usa mens' hockey. they don't play like they particularly want to win. there's no urgency, no jump. they are officially blah. but evidently they have enough points to get into the next round, so they still have some time to pick up their game.
was happy to see belbin & agosto get the silver. they're my wife's favorite icedance team. that italian team - whoa - that woman is looking poison at the guy one minute and the next hugging him. i couldn't be married to her! ouch!
