He said that Chuck Dukowski, of Black Flag, once said, "I would never want to depend on my music." His meaning was, and Ian agreed with this and I did too, that the moment your music is a means to make money before anything else it loses its purity. It becomes, as Ian put it, "corrupted." Take that however you want. Also, jack, just thought I'd point out that aren't you the one who had the MacKaye quote about rather having 100 people hear your song than 100 dollars? Because I'm onboard with that, too. I've had people hear me, it's fantastic, I haven't made a cent from it. Because that's not where I'm at. I'm a fuckin' college student with a guitar. The way I see it, I might as well do as much as I can for free now.
whether dan-o playing covers intereres with his ability to be creative and make good music is neither for me or you to decide. you can judge his music accordingly, but you can't say it makes him less creative because that's bullshit. i did have that quote and i stand by it, and i don't just talk the talk, i walk the walk. i give every bit of music i've ever made away for free. i've never tried to make one single dime from anything i've recorded. now maybe i couldn't make a dime if i wanted to but i don't try because that's not why i do this. and i'm not a college student. and i have to work a real job 40 plus hours a week and scrape to pay my bills. and i still give away alot of music for free.
so don't lecture me on that quote son.
