So I was watching the Today show whilst trying to kick start the day. The Diet Coke advert with the brunette girl going into a barber shop and getting her long luxurious locks cut to a spiffy masculine short cut came on. (She still looks damned hot either way)

Anyway the BS is that when I last saw the advert 10-11 times it had Adam Ant's Goodie Two shoes playing which I really liked (lot's of fun memories)

Now...some anodyne anonymous whiny girl electro pop....WTF?!?!

Wonder if they didn't get the rights (unbelievable for The Coca-Cola Company) or some demographic obsessed anal retentive marketer ran a focus group only to find that the target demographic had no clue who Adam Ant was or that the music didn't connect. So they put something more contemporary and "accessible" in its place.

Either way I miss it. Time to hit up i-tunes I guess.

what I want to know is:

Why is the adjective "Scotch" used for whiskey, broth and Finger Biscuits - but for everything else you say "Scottish"?

Well like most of my countrymen having a massive chip on the shoulder about being called "Scotch" by ignorant yanks and aussie sheep shaggers the following is the closest to a definition I have been able to find.

1. Scotch is a general descriptor of a style of product (hence your list of yummy goodness, plus please add Scotch Eggs)

2. Scottish or Scots, means originating from Scotland

It's a bit like the arguments about what can be called champagne - the expensive stuff that's only made from that specific small region of France or any sparkling wine that's made by the methode champagnoise.

I (Kilwinning, Ayrshire), Bjam (Glasgow, Renfrewshire) and her bother Jamraza (Irvine, Ayrshire) are all Scottish born and (in their case partially) bred. the Mater Familis (Sarah) is from just outside London (Harrow, Middlesex to be specific) so is cursed with being English, but we forgive and love her.

Actually what has any of this to do with diet coke, Adam Ant or crappy marketing people trying to slice and dice the population?

My wife is a brunette like Pam Dawber but to my knowledge she has not been hanging around with Mark Harmon for the last 20 years. My similarity to Robin Williams is limited to occasional (see frequent) profanity.

...and to be specific Ben, the egg came from Sarah (English). It was the demon seed that I provided. Accordingly Bjam did not spring forth from a "Scotch Egg" but an English one...all that said it was tres amusing.

Plus I like this nonsense, it's getting my posting count up considerably

Well. thanks for the education. i'd always been told that i had a bit of scots-irish ancestry and i suppose (not knowing the history of the people of the british empire as well as i should) i just always misunderstood what the name meant.

i sometimes feel guilty for not knowing as much as i ought to about my heritage though... just a couple of years ago i learned that my great-grandmother (whom i remember hearing stories from as a child about when she arrived in this country) was not from slovakia as i'd thought, but from austria (her husband was slovak). but as you said, since i and my parents (and their parents, and in one case a line of ancestry stretching back to the mayflower) were born here, i guess here is where i'm from:).

and, back on topic: ummmm something about diet coke.
