Songs About Rainbows

Post by ken »

Hey All,

The subject of the Muppet Movie came up at lunch today. I was thinking about the first line, "Why are there so many songs about rainbows?" and realized I could only think of one, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Does Kermit know about more songs than I do? Can any of you name songs about rainbows? Remember they have to be written before 1979.

Thanks!

Ken

Allmusic suggests there are about 20 titled simply "Rainbow" from 1978 or earlier. Not to mention all the varients. I could not produce titles without such a crutch as allmusic.com

there's I'm Always Chasing Rainbows, of course. Rolling Stones had She's a Rainbow. Three Dog Night have Roses and Rainbows.

"rainbow in the dark", ronnie james dio.

[edit: scratch that, holy diver was released in 1983.]

"rainbow ride" (if memory serves) was the name of the b-side to charlie daniels band's "devil went down to georgia".

[edit #2: err, this was apparently released in 1979 so it may or may not precede the muppet movie.]

and there was that song about rainbows (at least one) in finians rainbow...

Ah, but how many of these are actually about rainbows per se? And do any address the question of what is on the other side? And more to the point, has anyone ever actually claimed and/or believed that every wish will be heard and answered when wished on the morning star?

I suppose these are the ravings of someone who hears voices calling his name.

A check of my playlist gives me "Wonderful Rainbow" by Lightning Bolt (off the album of the same name), "Rainbows" by Madvillain, and "HYBRID RAINBOW" by the Pillows (off the FLCL soundtrack).

Old thread revival!

I just found this thread. Good question! Songs about rainbows before 79, eh? I can't think of many, but it is possible that Kermit was referring to a wider field than that. Consider:

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side

Maybe this can be taken to include songs about gold as well. And maybe wishes. Are there wishes on the other side of the rainbow? There damn well ought to be.

I think there should be a week of Songfight where the only name we could use is something to do with rainbows. Then we would have a lot more rainbow songs to talk about.

You could always search the freedb for "rainbow" ALBUM titles or "rainbow" TRACK titles. You can search by title, but can't filter by release year.

Also, these were all entered in by humans, so prepare for the release year or titles or even artists to be dead wrong.
