Music Videos

Post by Niveous »

I love music videos. I think there have been a lot of great ones and some spectacular directors like Samuel Bayer, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Dean Karr, Sophie Mueller and Floria Sigimundi. So i figured why not make a thread to talk about music videos.

The first video I'll mention is "Savin' Me" by Nickelback. I hate Nickelback so getting me to listen to a 4 minute song is a great feat. This is a great li'l sci-fi concept video. And timing the end of the guitar solo with the end of the clock is a great touch.

That is a cool concept, and yeah, impressive that it made me listen to the entire song.

One thing I hate about music videos, though, is band narcissism, where the band just has to show themselves "performing", or, as in this case, just sitting around while the singer sings. I don't wanna see that shit, unless you're doing something interesting that enhances the concept of the video.

I love Kenna so hardcore. Here's a video I'm obsessed with: Are You the One?

I love that Kenna video.

Another video that I've been digging a lot lately is "Tear You Apart" by She Wants Revenge. It's another sci-fi concept video. It's directed by Joaquin Phoenix and has subtitles. Yay!

That was an odd video. Perfect for the song but very odd.

Yikes. I'm sitting here with the kinderlings (well, M was here. T was otherwise occupied) and I'm watching that. I'm thinking Tortoise & The Hare just a bit wacky. Okay. Then the Tortoise starts to eat the rabbit. Yikes. Thanks to quick mouse clicking and M's mind being more on my orange kazoo (yes Eric & Asya- that kazoo), I saved M's fragile egg-shell mind from getting blown away.

That was freaky. But I dug the tune.

It's the name and the massive media campaign. I expected the next emo clone a la Hawthorne Heights. I was happily surprised. She Wants Revenge is a great band.

Hell yeah, that's a good song, isn't it? I actually started waxing lyrical to my other half about the quality of the production until I realised I was being looked at in a strange way.

The video feels a bit cheap, to be honest. Like Top of The Pops in the '80s.

the video for the coldplay song w/the giant robot is retarded. near the end they act like they are rocking out pretty hard, so I turn the sound on and see it is the same calm sounds as before and that is why I think coldplay are a bunch of faggots.

I have always adored that "Imitation of Life" video. The amount of work that must have went into that one shot. Hammer & Tongs did an awesome job turning 20 seconds of film into a wonderful video. They do neat videos. I also like the Badly Drawn Boy video they did for "Disillusioned" where he's the human taxi cab. Though, I will admit sometimes they're just plain weird like Blur's "Coffee & TV" or The Wannadies "Little by Little".

And they made the movie version of "Hitchhiker's Guide...". You can decide if that's a good thing or not.

weirdly, my brother and parents have played 'Imitation of Life' about 5 times between them since that comment was posted so it was in my head as I read that.

when I think of R.E.M. videos though, Stand is always the one that springs to mind. it's so stupidly cheesey. I used to hate it but now I love it

also, this is the second time I've linked to this but Why?'s Rubber Traits is awesome and I imagine people who are hearing him for the 1st time think he's a god damn weirdo

and I love that Subtle track

I love the work of Floria Sigismondi. This video ties up in such an odd way. I really dig it.

I like that Kenna video.

Speaking of REM, I caught "The One I Love" the other day. It's been years. Brings back lots of memories.

"1968 Holes" by Cristian Vogel
Watch it here, or a little better quality here.
This video reminds me of the artwork for Autechre's Draft 7.30.
I highly recommend checking out Cristian Vogel's other work.
