But but but...Plat wrote:But what about the whole "er"/"re" thing? I mean, "centre"? Am I supposed to pronounce that "sentry"? They've maliciously hooked me on phonics!
'center' and 'centre' are two completely different words!
'center' is the middle of something, and 'centre' is a building.

Is that like 'Hooked on Classics'?Plat wrote:But what about the whole "er"/"re" thing? I mean, "centre"? Am I supposed to pronounce that "sentry"? They've maliciously hooked me on phonics!
I assume the Canadians, with their ker-azzy links to the Commonwealth, are following the British model - colour, humour, centre, etc, whereas the Americans have made the sensible step of spelling this words phonetically. While I love the fact that centre and theatre are spelt centre and theatre, i cannot deny that center and theater make them easier to pronounce.

There's a famous Twain quote that I'm just too lazy to google up but you probably already know anyway, so I'll just refer to it obliquely like this then go back to playing guild wars. Yeah.j$ wrote:Americans have made the sensible step of spelling this words phonetically
