to be honest I know bugger all by/about any of these bands
I know about Minutemen cos my friend in Derby namedropped them amongst Fugazi and Black Flag.
I know who Mike Watt is because I saw the 'Looking for a thrill' dvd by Thrill Jockey and he had a tiny caption in Magnet once.
Having listened to them a lot this month I was surprised by how they're not full-on hardcore, but this is a good thing.
anyways, i listened to these songs and decided to share my thoughts
Ricky Shallow and the Blown Loads do Minutemen's "Nature Without Man.": This isn't the kind of melody that usually grabs me, but I really like the jittering energy of this and it sounds so 80's in that great way that not many people knew about including me until about 5 years ago. Not sure how it compares to the original, but now I know the song I can hear the original and think 'aah, that's what they did with it'.
'Untitled Song For The Rest Of The World' - The Johnny Cashpoint Band: I love the very first bar where it makes you think it's gonna be a half-time rockout and then it kicks in proper. Makes me think of early MBV but less flowery, so it must be hitting the mark. Makes me think of Count Duckula, don't ask why.
Primitive Screwheads with the Minutemen's Viet Nam: hey, this is cool! good guitar, good bass, good drums. I like the lyrics to this one too. I like stoppy starty bits. Although this makes me realise that they do have a lot to answer for in terms of rubbish bands they've influenced; but hey, all great bands are gonna get half-arsed rip-offs i guess.
JT does Brave Captain: hmmm this is taking a million years to load, ah there we are. This is hilarious. It's great the way it goes through all the different sections and kudos for the interpretation. I really like the chorus, your voice suits it well. nicely done
Do you want new wave or do you want the truth? - Those Meddling Kids ft. Mogosagatai: so I listened to some Minutemen and this one stuck out to me. I thought I'd go for the 'dog scratching itself on the strings' style of guitar playing because I thought it'd give a similar jangly effect but still be different. Thanks to Mogo for offering to do vocals, I think it works way better this way. To me this is the least 80's sounding, which i think is bad but I hope it captures some of that essence
all this was good. good idea. and It's really put me in the mood for an R.E.M. coverfight cos they're both massive and mainstream and obscure and clique-y. but most importantly, consistently good (without getting into a big ol' debate about the last 2 albums)

feel free to start a new thread if you want to talk about this, but bear in mind before it even starts, everybody else already lost.Furrypedro wrote:It's really put me in the mood for an R.E.M. coverfight.
