Hey, that brings up an interesting (to me, anyway) question: If it's 'Alcoholics Anonymous', why are people there introducing themselves?

Because the group's name came from the Big Book, which in turn states "It is important that we remain anonymous because we are too few, at present to handle the overwhelming number of personal appeals which may result from this publication."

Actually, they don't use last names. So, for example, I'd say (IRL) "Hi, my name is Jon P. and I'm an alcoholic." But really, that notion is just absurd.
