i owe a review. ive listened all week. they will be short cause i am ready to go to sleep but at least theyre there.

BOOTY - sweetness. i think the song is fun, kickin and vshhh.

CARAVAN - not something i get to hear all the time. this song is fun to listen to. its a little corney, but oh well. it reminds me of animal planet or something.

CARPET - this stuff is good as always. good stuff my friend. stuff is good. good is the stuff. stuff good.

CHIN - its okay. its a good entry for this fight, but not my fav. thanks

DAD - midi to the max. its really not too bad for midi. i think midi is far from original sound, but good song

DARK - very dark. it sounds liek when i try to hit those really low notes right when i wake up.

spoons - funk. good tune but where's the singing? its a little bit too much funk.

EWB - commodore 64. its a good idea with the sounds, but the song isnt my favvvvvvvvv. good entry in though.

FF - Luke wrote guitar parts and damien wrote lyrics and some of the melody. i did bass and harmony. frank installed the lights in the roof. bob helped install the outlets so we could plug in the stuff to record.

JON - good sawng. its a little folky and fruity. good song.

LESS - OH MY FUNK. beep dbsh shmag dbsh beep bjsshhh... those voices are so scary, holy crap.

Melvin - dude... you suck. i am jealous

PACO - once the drums kick in, it is awesome. very good especially the scatting!@!

'the next guy' - good song, i dont know what to say about it. teh trumps are so fake. its good. nothing amazing. nothing really bad. i think that makes your song good!good entry son.

frisbee - sweet jam my friend.

Tinski - DUF shmag. i think you have some nice recording equipment. it helps me want to vote for your song. you sing very well. the end of yer song has the computer buzz!!! if this was recorded with crappy recording equipment like half of the entries in songfight, i dont think id like the song nearly as much. but i do like it! great song!

whatever - this song is like, has cool music, but its kinda like... the vox are like, whatever.

tokyo - i don tknow. it is okay.

Misfitful inklings whilst perusing --

Jon Eric:
Not in the mood for novelty songs, but at least it's performed and recorded well. And some decent lyrics.

spOOns:
R2D2! You miserable bucket of bolts! What will Master Luke say!?

?:
Best thing I can say about this is that it sure didn't seem like 4 minutes long. That beat and the especially the middle noise section had a numbing effect on my brain. Maybe you shoulda screamed some of those lyrics.

river god:
Nice feel. Nice changes. Good vox. More changes. That bass/percussive thing is cool. Evokes some weird, fluid, muted color imagery . I like it all!

EWB:
Subtle key changes and general musical competence keeps me interested. Good soundscape. Could have used a few big changes here and there, but not bad. Good integration of synth sounds.

<3:
Cartoon voice isn't doing much for me. Have you ever submitted a song without heavy vocal processing? I haven't heard them all (I don't think), but one you sounded kinda like a guy, this one who knows, and your posts imply you are a chick. No biggie; I guess I'm gender-focused or something. Or maybe you're in a Witness Protection program, or you just don't have confidence in your vocals, but it seems odd. Maybe I'm off base. Or just rude. Sorry for saying what I think. I like the middle instrumental part. It's perky, like you! Goodness!

OK, now I'm seriously wondering why I called Jon Eric's song 'novelty'... the 5 songs that followed it were just rythmically and melodically arranged electronic sounds with vocals. Which are novelty? Hmmm...

Booty C:
'Real' music. As usual, good '60s vibe. Sounds a little thin w/o EQ. I didn't catch the Lucia ref. I can see a bunch of crewcuts and bobbysocks dancing to this in the school gym. And loving it. And the principal is frowning.

TFTF:
Pleasant little ditty. I like the double-tracked vocals. Sounds like an early Simon and Garfunkle demo.

Melvin:
Tight. Congrats for finding a hook. Not many left nowdays. Good all around. Energy is expensive -- thanks for sharing.

Tam Lin:
Good lyrics, good story. Good vox, good sound. Good.

Chin:
Cool harmony and guitar. Mellotron? Oh, backwards, like Strawberry Fields... cool. Feels sad.

Carpetburn:
You're not projecting your voice, and having trouble staying in key. Whoever you are. That 'cymbal' sounds like a CD player error. Vox is actually not bad. Pretty tight. I like the whole end bit.

Caravan Ray:
Your seasons are all backwards. Glad your culture isn't. This is pretty cool. I like the 'ethnic' instruments... which is a weird characterization, since everything is ethnic in one way or another (except 'western civilization', where everything is 'normal' and 'without color'). I see tourists with cameras and a guide in a pith helmet, standing comfortably close to the Land Rovers. "They neither look nor sound aboriginal", says a lady from Bath. "All part of the show, Ma'am. They're clever, these", says the guide.

Tinski:
Very cool and complete. Nice voice, nice story, good playing and mix.

Forestfighters:
I like that name more. Maybe it's already taken. If not, I'll take it. For some reason this reminds me of Oregon or Northern California. It's pretty well done.

Dark Daves:
This reminds me of the stuff I used to do when the first Alesis Quadraverb was the shit. And the ProCo Rat. But I wouldn't do the same thing for 5 1/2 minutes. Well, maybe once or twice.

Daddy B:
This is weirdly complete and complex, given the cutesy intro, the cliche'd lead guitar, and the barely breathed vocal. Like somebody spending 20 hours to counterfeit a $5 bill. But the guts are good.

Paco:
Nice hooky rythym. Like the guitar solo(s). Good changes. Tight. Entertaining, but the early vocals (lyrics?) kinda bug me. Nah -- they're fine. Very cool.

Paco, Tinski, Caravan Ray, Melvin, and TamLin are the best. And Booty is right up there. And xtrg. Good fight. Excellent fight. Paco gets points for technical merit, but I think I have to listen again. To Melvin and rivergods. And C. Ray.

booty c 3
Yay, cowbell. Nice lo-fi rawk. OK.

caravan ray
i like the loping groove with the didj. nice vocals in the intro. i like when it cuts back to just a tiny bit of percussion and nothing else, that's cool. whoa, it gets a little bizarro there with that extra voice. key change?! getting a little too strange for me. that synth that comes in doesn't really blend in well for me. could've done without that very last bit.

carpetburn
it takes maybe a little too long to start rawking. when it does, the guitars sound a bit thin or something. i like the lead part behind the vox. needs a hooky chorus, i don't really hear one. but hey, that's just me. like the "go crazy" part of the ending.

chin music
corpse folk? sort of... i miss that genre. i like the guitar but the voice is maybe too monotonous for me, or something. this could use some creepy percussion like some shaking sleigh bells here and there. or a fwappy low thump, like of a kick or floor tom. i like the mellotron flute sound. more of that! more slide guitar, too, that would sound good in there.

daddybop
sounds like a cacophony of midi at first. gets a little more coherent for me when the singing comes in. i'm not sure i like the middle spanish interlude. it's getting a little too midi for me... ah, guitar solo! still, it's all a little cheesy sounding, and i'm kinda losing interest. whoa, rawk ending.

the darkest daves
this is boring. aargh.

@eclectic spOOns
still ... waiting ... for some vocals ... eh, giving up, sorry.

elastic waste band
doh, robot voice. not one of my favorite songfight gimmicks. yeah, not really doing much for me.

forestry fighters
damn, this is awesome. isn't it in-nee-briated, not in-neh-briated? great instrumentation, singing, arrangement, etc. i really like it, not much more to say about it.

jon eric
i wish this had more of the sound of The BeWells "June Bug". it seems like that's the style of song, but the recording isn't quite living up to it. i'm not really into the heavy stress on lu-SEEahh, or the way the song sort of peters out for a sec right after that. i do like the whistling, of course. i think mostly i'd like a somewhat more delicate singing style. good song, though.

<3
definitely postal service vibe. the vox don't work for me either. i like the "i'd rather have sake though" line. the backing tracks are pretty good though the drums could use more oomph. the vox bring it down, but with some really good singing over this it would be good. still a bit of a postal service ripoff, but good.

melvin
some nice rawkin'. overall fine. i could maybe use a longer guitar solo.

paco del stinko
this is alright. kinda deranged sounding at parts. some good playing. what's up with that breakdown? doesn't work for me.

tam lin music
i like this song. it's kinda long and rambling but i like it. it's nice.

thanks for the frisbee
i like this one, too, and am finding that i'm running out of constructive criticism juice. doh! anyway, this one's cool.

tinski robotnik
this was really last minute. really. kudos to ken for providing the ethnic flavor (and by that i just mean playing melodica and mandolin) as well as doing his usual steller production job. i managed to contribute 1/2 of a line of lyrics, which made me happy.

?
cool beat. i like the keys, too. not so into the sample, though. i was hoping for some tricky (the artisit) sounding vocals. you do sound very butthole surfery, though. i actually kinda like it. not bad.

x-tokyo-river-god
i like this one, too. doh, too tired to figure out something more useful to say about it. sorry!

i think i'm going to vote forestry fighters.

no song worth it's salt gives everything away first listen; if it did then James Blunt would be good.
One day you'll want a rock song with more than just a catchy chorus, and on that day Carpetburn will be there for you

Brief reviews:

@eclectic spOOns: I like this. Does it relate to the title at all? Heh! I like the story at the end.

Melvin: This is good. I think this is a cut above the average Melvin - and the average Melvin is very high quality. I will listen to this again - this may be one of my favourites of yours

Forestry Fires: I think you will win. Wonderful. This has almost an Australian feel to it - I thinking The Underground Lovers and The Lucksmiths, but especially the The Go-Betweens - the lead vox seem to be channeling Grant McLennan. Great lyrics too - great work.

Tinski Robotnik: Nice. Very Balkan. Great vocals

Paco Del Stinko: Ha! Easily the best use of the title. Very good song. Would almost be voteworthy except for the jazz sort of stuff and scatting at the end. I hate that shit.

The Darkest Daves: I like the sound. Guitars and drums sound good. Vocals are not convicing though - and you don't seem to have much to say either. Good effort - but not quite getting me.

<3 I like the bleepy intro - but the vox are a bit much for me. Seem to be some timing issues with the phrasing

Chin Music: This isn't really grabbing me at all

Booty Chesterfield Trio: This is awesome! Love the guitar licks at the begining w/cowbell. Having seen you play last week I know this would go off live. Unfortunately I think your recordings will always suffer for me now in comparison to my memory of your live show - still this is a contender.

Jon Eric: Well done - but not my cup of tea at all.

x-tokyo-river-god: This is really great. Wonderful vocals. Great noise around 3:00. This will probably get my vote

? Not grabbing me

Elastic Waste Band: Nice Kraftweriness. Pleasant but no vote

Tam Lin Music: Very well done and professional sounding - but in a big fight, its not standing out as a winner for me.

Thanks for the Frisbee: Nice song, beautifully executed. No vote this week - but your stuff is always worth listening to

Daddybop: Another very good entry that just just isn't up there with the more outstanding ones

Carpetburn: Great opening - the vox are sounding almost Billy Bragg-y. Interesting song - never boring. Very good.

...and
Me: Lyrics mainly inspired by the book Pig City and the University of Queensland, located in the Brisbane suburb of St Lucia. I found the didjeridu sample on a CD at my local library - it doesn't really relate to anything - I just liked the sound.

High quality fight. Carpetburn, Frisbee, BootyC3, Melvin, Forestry Fires, X-Tokyo-River-Gods, Spoons all deserve votes.
