Juice is a tough call. If you watch <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFb2wZWovI4">the video</a>, it scores high on the Yacht Quotient, but nevertheless it's very low in Ineffable Yachtiness. I'd have to say no.

On the other hand, Summer Breeze is PERFECT... the title itself screams Californian Nautical, and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBbkoCM4waw">this video puts it off the charts.</a> If you can handle the insipidity...

This one would work; I haven't had a chance to hunt down the others yet. And it seems like a good fit for you, given that the singer Dan Seals went on to great success on the country charts, in the late 80s.

I don't know how I missed that...I thought he somehow looked familiar. I had his '87 "The Best" on vinyl. Go ahead and put me down for "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight".

Clips for the other songs don't seem to come up easily in searches. I was listening to the thirty second snippets from the iTunes music store for reference. "Holdin' On To Yesterday" has some nice smooth vocals, but I suspect it has too much of a light prog rock vibe to make the cut. "Amie" is another song with some nice vocal harmony, but has too much of a country feel. I was leaning towards "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" and included Loggins & Messina's "A Love Song" as a backup option.

That Juice video is hilarious! I can't believe she didn't bump into the oboist and string section in the park. They had to be right near the band. I'm so bummed it's not yachy (edit: yachty) enough, but I agree that it's not.

I'm still turning "Summer Breeze" over in my head, looking for a good way to make it sizzle. There's shockingly little meat on those flimsy bones. What makes that song so beloved by the adult contemporary disc jockey? (edit: I guess that's what makes it quintessential of this genre. What were we thinking? And by "we" I mean my parents.)

Split decision in our house, J~ says too much rock and not enough yacht. I think it could work, though probably the only Steve Miller song that does.

I don't have an mp3, but I'll try to find one. I did find this on cassette over the weekend though. Turns out he did an equally cheesy tune called "Him" that I remembered from the radio.

He was also part of a band called "Street People" who had a minor hit in 1970 with a song called "Jennifer Tomkins". (A song I played on <a href="http://www.spewgrass.com/podcasts/glenn ... u">episode 12</a> of the <a href="http://www.spewgrass.com/delusions.php">House of Delusions Podcast.</a>)

As first mate, I personally think that "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" is an ideal choice. You still have to clear it up with the Cap'n 'though.

This is probably the closest Steve Miller ever got to Yacht Rock, but I think it's a little too much Rock and not enough Rock. The keyboard waters are a bit too choppy throughout to be considered smooooooth.

Dude that is far too ROCK to be smoooooooooooth. Cool song, but I would wager that the Cap'n can not approve that one. Not for this fight anyway.

OK, I never heard about Todd Rundgren picks ("Hello, It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends"), but where would Captain and Tennille's "Do That to Me One More Time" sit?

Also, how about Kiki Dee and Elton John's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"? I can't find a link right now.

I think I'm having trouble with smooooth rock. It either doesn't register as rock or something. I can't listen on these slow internet connections I've had lately. I'll do some home work tomorrow night.
