i'm with mostess on the mcdonalds... haven't eaten there in many years. except had an ice cream once.
harry potter has something that makes it a lot more interesting than many in the genre... can't explain what. characters? imaginiativeness? but if you don't get it that's ok. i like them a lot.

(yea never really got off on the harry potter thing)Mostess wrote:(I assume "commercial success == everybody likes it")
1) Harry Potter.
Why has it become such a franchise? The first book was fine, but no better than the slew of "I was a misunderstood orphan until magical powers whisked me off to faraway, mystical adventures wherein I became heroic" books marketed to middle-class 12 year olds. Certainly nowhere as interesting as the L'Engle or the LeGuinn stuff. (And don't say the complexity of the later sequels is the reason; if the first one wasn't so well-received, the sequels wouldn't have been written, published, or read).
2) McDonalds.
Cheap? Kind of. Fast? Not at meal time, unless it's somewhere remote. Easy? More like omnipresent. Most often they're dirty and depressing. The advertising got me as a kid, but these days I'd rather eat a stack of saltines than a Big Mac.
3) Fear Factor
Why is this still on television? Who is watching it? Why does everyone know what it is? I thought McEnroe's "The Chair" was more fun, and that was practically tedious.
4) I agree with all the stuff about cars and talking about directions.
People seem to think that driving and navigating skills are indicative of intelligence and insight. But plenty of idiots seem to know plenty of shortcuts.
and mcdonalds may be cheap... but i'd prefer wendy's if it comes to fast food... mcdonalds has this horrid tendency of makin' me gag
yea i never watch it... it seems like it'd be wild to be on it... but it's rather boring to watch
and yea it gets frickin' old... i don't care to hear directions unless i actually need them

uhm... maybe for a better irony i should... go...Leaf wrote:Poor June wrote:and yea it gets frickin' old... i don't care to hear directions unless i actually need them
Very ironic considering your signature right now....although you did say "hear" not "read".
take a left on to prodripple... go to the second stoplight swing a right onto spruce... and 3 blocks up... you'll be at the place where signatures go? O_o
i don't think my signature uses up but like what 5 words? O_o i don't see it really bein' a directional thing... i was asked to change my previous signature... so i changed it to this for the time being

You mightn't get them - but Stripey the Tiger got one of them.Kapitano wrote: Siegfried & Roy
I got no real problems with the whole Constitutional Monarchy thing - it's just that our current Queen is such an ugly old cow (her husband's funny though). I'd like to swap them for Prince Frederick of Denmark - cos' he's married to Princess Mary, who's Tasmanian, and a pretty good sort too.Kapitano wrote: Royalty

I don't get depression. I don't mean that I don't physically get it, or even understand it's causes, I mean how someone can allow themselves, when they are fully congnizant of their condition, to continue to do the things that enable their condition. It really pisses me off actually. Obviously I'm having a personal experience to cause this rant... nevertheless... people need the courage to change their situation if things "got them down". It's enough to make me depressed.

I get that brain's function differently man. And I didn't say I can always pull myslef out of it, or that I do. I just don't get how, when you know what's wrong, and the cause, you still can't pull yourself out of it. It creates a feeling of helplessness, and as some one very close to me is in this position right now, and has been on and off for months, it's hard to be a part of. It hurts. And I wish was as simple as "this is what's wrong, change it".
This is what I don't get... why can't we just do that?
I think you misunderstood me, but that's not unusual.

depression's a vicious cycle. the very fact of being depressed contributes to not being able to pull yourself out. "i'd get out of the house, which would make me happier, but i'm so depressed i can't leave the house." kind of. also, it's often related to biological problems or changes, and those aren't the kind of thing that are easy to make an end run around.

Depression is not sadness. It's not something where you just "pull yourself out of it" after logically identifying the cause. It's your brain giving you a fundamentally skewed filter through which to see the world. Everyone listens to what their brain is telling them.Leaf wrote:I get that brain's function differently man. yeah. I was being rhetorical, which is not neccessarily wise on a message board... spending all day staring at a computer screen waiting for shit to go down is condusive to hanging out on the message boards all day... which leads to unneccessary complaining after a shitty phone call... and you all are right...
I just wish it WAS simple, and as easy as "hey do this". But it's not.

it's too bad though that the depression card is played so much. I think some people are just lazy or afraid, or most likely both, and the "I suffer from depression" crutch becomes easy to lean on. It quickly generates empathy for them in some circles, buys them time to deal with the stress (ors) they are troubled by, and or allows them to avoid dealing at all.
That's not to say that depression isn't clinical or existant. I'm sure it is. I feel for those people who are not able to pull them out of their tailswing.

And that's why you don't get it, your original point is still valid. My father had Alzheimers, kind of simliar. It's a very cruel disease that leaves those around the person who is effected feeling helpless. Why not take him away from me all at once instead of watching him waste away for years? Watching someone you care for suffer unnecessarily is more than enough to confuse someone. My heart goes out to you Leaf, I hope the person close to you gets the help they need and recovers.Leaf wrote:I just wish it WAS simple, and as easy as "hey do this". But it's not.
