For those who said there was too much reverb on the vox for our track (Wages of Sin), here is a different mix. The music is a bit different as I don't have the final version Obscurity made nor the mixing chops, so if you ask nicely, he might post his mix with less reverb (it would certainly be better than this mix: http://www.philwages.com/music/Glutton_wagesmix.mp3).

Almost. It's more 'poking fun' than 'having fun'. Having fun at someone else's expense.
See, I get rebelling against conformity when I listen to #. That's why my first review of them was a punk reference, because of the bare musical structures and arrangements, but that is just a quick label to offer my personal impression. Punk is really more of an anti-establishment culture, but anti-conformity falls pretty close to the tree. I think that's why I like it so much.

hooray its dead week in college station and I just took a couple hours and reviewed every song on here. Then for some reason It didnt post. I'm really sorry guys, but im too tired to do all taht again. I really enjoyed most of the fight. There were a few songs i could do without.

Man I just wish i hadnt wasted all that time. Well i guess heres the conclusion i had:

Winners in my mind Frankie Big FAce (of course), finding nemoy and thanks for the frisbee (for bringing the twee-ness), and Glenn Case and Biddy's Little Trip (for reminding me of other great bands i love, BNL and Mad Caddies respectively).

If anybody else really wants to hear my review of thier song just message me and I'll respond honestly. Really sorry about that guys.

Can't wait to get back in the fray here, its been too long!

I resubmitted our song, so hopefully it will be put up soon. If you could take time to review it and factor it into your voting, we'd appreciate it.

I've learned that lesson a few times. Which is to say, I never learn.

I don't know if I'll get to review these, but I've listened to them all several times. My new car stereo has a USB port on it, so I loaded the fight onto a key. Standouts in my mind include:

Glenn Case (I can't get that melody out of my head);
Frankie Big Face (how did you do those strings? They're amazing);
WreckdoM (this is seriously the best thing I've ever heard from you guys. At the end you sound like Will Ferrell's impression of Cubs announcer Harry Caray, and it cracks me up every time).

There wasn't much in this fight that was out-and-out unlistenable. Nice job, all!

My song was put together pretty quick. It's all one-take tracks, except the vocals, which I had to do a few times. This one was tougher to sing than I'd thought it would be. The drums are a 'brushes' patch on my Roland V-kit.

Chuck, I believe it is up. At least Chuck Chuck Moose is up, and I assume that is you. However, you could have helped your case in the following ways:

1. resubmit by email right away, as soon as you see that it was missed.
2. when you post that it isn't up, mention your band name, so we know what we are looking for!

Thanks,

It just occurred to me that there is a local punk rock band here in Tampa named Pig Pen. Just FYI :-)

We (Ghost Town Gridlock) opened up for them not too long ago.

I doubt there'll ever be a real problem ;-) I was just listening to the fight and laughed when I remembered the name Pig Pen.

-Edit-
Billy & Steve - Awesome. This will most likely get my vote.

Denyer: This is the track I've listened most to today. Can't pick my favourite bit. it's between "being dead andf not being able to think of a rhyme for negative", the chorus, "I know I'm still alive cos I'm still eating pies", and of course....y'know, I haven't forgotten Michael Keaton, he was the best batman. vote.

Jolly McRoger: 1st impression: This is pretty good, I'm digging the style a lot, I think I could imagine hearing this as early Dischord release or something which is pretty fucking cool. I like the bit that goes "sitting where I once sat" and then stops. One worry is that one day you'll get really slick at playing and lose the edge, but you're not there yet, ignore me, this is cool.

Finding Nemoy: Regardless of how much you sound like TFTF I can't get enough of these songs right now. I don't get the twee comments, I though Belle & Sebastien were twee, this is ernest. Anyway, this is a keeper.

Zipline: Just checking, that is glenny singing right? It's good, only problem is recording quality, sounds like you recorded it all live, perhaps if you did the vox alone afterwards and spent some time on them they'd be spot on. maybe you did do it that way in which case I'll shut up. It's just, people are easily put of cool tracks by shabby vox aren't they, and we don't want to give them a reason. This track is another cool one from you guys and I've now decided that (although this isn't the best song this week) a) you're the best band on SF currently and b) you're the new Sonofsupercar, there's nobody else going. The quiet-ish section just before the outro is cooool.

Glenn Case: This is immediate in exactly the way Frankie's isn't, lovely upbeat and bouncey. I think this might be one of your instant classics, which makes me glad to be reviewing. One day we'll look back on this and go 'why doesn't he write 'em like THAT any more' but that will be when you've got into world music and stuff. I love the missed out bars or however you've shuffled the structure about.

PiGPEN: Your vocal style is growing on me, bizarrely. I could really get into this if the track weren't so MIDI, there's some good hooks and I like the direction it takes but I wish it sounded better, instead it reminds me of discovering computer recording at school. Harsh words but with a decent band/instrument/ set of sounds this swould be one of my faves. I like this song, please learn to play something.

Stylon Pilson: Not bad indie stuff, continually threatens to be something more but I like the whole arrangement and there's some good lyrics. It's pretty good but there's nothing to set it apart.

FBF: This is a really nice song, top 5 definitely, love the arrangment and I know it's a slow burner so I'm gonna keep listening to it over the next few weeks to let it sink in better. My main problem with it now is that in spite of it's length I can listen to it on a loop for ages and it always seems to pass me by, nothing reaches out and says 'Listen to me!' which is a good thing in a way, cos melodies that pound you over the head piss me off, but it means that if it ever becomes my fave song of the fight, which it could, it will be well after the voting is over.

TFTF: This is nice, it doesn't grab me as immediately as the Fining Nemoy one, and the lyrics don't sink in right away so it'll probably pass me by during the week. In a month or two it'll click with me, then I'll want to cover it and will probably have another TFTF listening party.

Melvin: Sounds good but the repitition is doing my head in after 30 seconds which isn't a good sign. At the start of this I thought "Finally, the melvin song" but that was the only time it really grabbed me. There's some good rhythms with the guitars. sounds like you were testing out a few Ideas.

Octothorpe: Considerably fewer clicks here, thanks for that. The song's alright but what really gets me (in the good way) is the guitar, it's meandery as hell but I just love the way it jangles. Could've been a perfectly good song if it weren't for those lyrics. well done for trying to rhyme 'mutton' 'cousin' and 'hun', that bit was worse than the Indling song.

Ratt Poizon: Yes, ratt poizon is le shiz, you do some cool things with your guitar and I like the vox. The rhythm section sounds like a hip-hop track which is kinda funkay. I miss the mentalism and sitars and shit though.

Wreckdom: best song I've heard by you, Rahzel eat yer heart out.

Cranial Biffida: Your name's weird, I can't get it out of my head which is ironic. I dunno what a biffida is. I'm not a fan of heavy gothic sounding stuff, but for what this is nothing sounds shit. That's quite a big sound you've got there. Maybe if I was more into it I wouldn't mind the length as much, but this is too long for me considering it doesn't really do anything it hasn't already done in the first minute (dropping out an instrument doesn't count).

Yes Yes No Yes???: Jimmy Jet and his TV Set should take note, THIS is how to write a good song with only guitar/bass/vox. Admittedly the vocals could be better but that guitar sound is flange-tastic and this is nice in a whimsical way with some cool chords, it's just nice.

Billy & Steve: Punktastic, The drum programming here is pretty cool, so it's a shame that things like that ride let it down, a bit too persistent but fuck it. cool vocals. The main verse riff doesn't quite nail it for me but overall this is pretty good. Steve you rock.

Brandon Ellison: This is pretty well done is a kind of morose sea shanty type way, not exactly immediate but it's a good tune and very well recorded. Probably deserving of more time than I can be bothered to give it, sorry.

Wagesof sin: Interesting collab, I don't expect to hear wages over electro stuff so that's cool. The programming is good, quite a cool tune but the vox feel a bit laboured and drawn out in places. It's fine, but the flow is upset slightly.

ZeaLous1 feat Darkheart: This sounds a bit professional. Most importantly the rapping is solid, and well recorded, but that church organ is really good, dunno if it's a loop or you wrote it yerself or what but it's good. Bassline needs to be louder but makybe my speakers are just cack.

Pizza Party: Good production, all the parts are solid, good mix, pretty good lyrical flow. I'm sure I'm not the first to say that namedropping Songfight will make us all roll our eyes (or something). Good though this is I have issues with the style, I'm bummed out that all the hip-hop around at the mo' seems more influenced by JT than.....anything other than poppy, r'n'b rap, y'know something a bit old skool, Funk loops and bronxed beats; I guess I still haven't got over things sounding intentionally cheesy and midi, I like a bit of grit. Anyway, stylistic quibbles aside, the rapper in the 3rd verse is awesome.

J.R. Stinkenstein: Nothing wrong with this technically but it's nestled snuggly in the genre which I have the least time for. apologies.

Gentleman Theives: Very suave; this is nice, it's small and well-formed with a few classy little touches. Never overdone, or badly done. good.

Jimmy T: Sounds like you've been practicing, this is a really good song, excellent recording and arrangement. I think it'd fit well on an R.E.M. album. It doesn't go for obvious buttons but hits you in a really subtle way. well done.

Rain down Hell: This should be fun.....I think it would've been more appropriate for the 'Wedding Song' fight. The first 30 seconds indicate that this will be a lot more interesting than it is, lucky I'm at work/not going anywhere. after about 6 minutes I notice the beat and feel disappointed that since you decided to stick to a tempo/rhythm you went for the most boring one, this is about as much of a crescendo as we're gonna get isn't it. The unfortunate thing is you probably put effort into this. The question is, if there wasn't an impenetrable wall of fuzzy rape-death on this song would there be anything left to listen to? and would it be any good then?

Scrap heap: narrowly beat RDH to worst song of the fight. do it.

Wormsweater: Didn't make it

Chuck chuck moose: God dammit, no I can't be arsed.

I think I deserve a free pie for that.

Thanks for the kind words! I have indeed been practicing, mostly on the v-kit. It's coming along, thanks to some info from these forums, and from a Neil Peart DVD I borrowed from a buddy of mine. Although the latter is mostly just to get me fired up to play, I have picked up a few things that help me play a little more like real drummers do.

And yes, kudos for doing your reviews. Tell me where to send the pie, and your flavor preference.

ALSO: Spud, there's something weird with the Chuck Chuck Moose song link.

FurryPedro, nope I just play guitar, that's Martyr singing. He's the sometimes off key singer with lot's of character and conviction, I'm the off key guy that's breathy with no power. The vocals are recorded live, however, I should point out that we let the ADAT roll and jam the song about 4 times (10 minute versions), then I try and edit it into a nice composition. So you're actually in a sense getting the better of the vocal takes. But nothing is overdubbed.

Thanks for the high praise! Such comments about our band would not hold true up against a Carpetburn track, but very nice to hear!

Thanks there! I'm listening now. This ain't bad. My player shows it as nearly 7 minutes long, but it's actually only three. And the length is just about right for the song. Great fiddle/violin! (I have a feeling one of those terms is probably offensive to players of the other, so apply the appropriate one, please.)

Zealous' organ sample is from the Fugue of J. S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Just so you know, I guess. It's a pretty piece anyway.

The music is just intended to serve as a backdrop for the words.

Cranial Biffida is word play on the condition "spina bifida", which is technically "split spine". But most people characterize it as "born with the spine on the outside". So, Cranial Biffida is like having your head inside out. And because your head is inside-out, I think you would spell bifida wrong.

I finally finished my Glutton song today. I was really busy for a long time and bleh. I know I won't be in the fight, I just want reviews for the last however many days until the next song is due.

Here is the link http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=5762

Edit: I just want to make a note that the lyrics are inspirired by my girlfriend's recent visit. She came to KS for a week to see me and she asked me when she got back to CA to write a song about our time together. So I did. :D
