And Zipline plays on . . .

[/b]Zipline:[/b] Just checking, that is glenny singing right? It's good, only problem is recording quality, sounds like you recorded it all live, perhaps if you did the vox alone afterwards and spent some time on them they'd be spot on. maybe you did do it that way in which case I'll shut up. It's just, people are easily put of cool tracks by shabby vox aren't they, and we don't want to give them a reason. This track is another cool one from you guys and I've now decided that (although this isn't the best song this week) a) you're the best band on SF currently and b) you're the new Sonofsupercar, there's nobody else going. The quiet-ish section just before the outro is cooool.

I think that Glenny addressed the vocals well enough, but I just wanted to thank you very much for the high praise. We really enjoy playing, and we also like playing together. As you know, we are certainly ones to cut and paste, but I think that one of our characteristics is that we are indeed a live band. What you hear is what we are doing in the moment.

I'm not against working with other vocalists (stay tuned), or even overdubbing here and there, but the way we feel after a live jam is just so satisfying that, for me, it's well worth being a good band that makes just ok recordings.

And thanks for noticing the Steps Ahead fusion section before the "Get Fat!" outro, it's also my favorite part too. Well, I also like the drum fills, but then again . . .

Once again, thank you all for listening and commenting, we hear you, and it certainly does shape the way we approach the "fight."

Thanks, Jim! Either term is cool, FYI; only style snobs care about those kind of things, and since our music is pretty much all over the place stylistically, that automatically disqualifies me.

JR: When I first heard that initial guitar riff, I thought I was going to love this song. The vocal melody is pretty boring, however. It is definitely the weakest element of the song. The instrumental aspect is performed really well and is very interesting. This song gets a FOUR (out of five).

Melvin: I definitely agree with the similarities to 311 that someone else pointed out. The “Thank you lord, for this beautiful day” hook isn’t amazing; as a result, it gets repeated a little too much. It’s cool how you sing the verses over it though. The section that the song goes into after that (chorus?) is way cool, and I love the “my amp is about to explode” solo tone. This is a FOUR star song.

Jim Tyrell: I’m not a big fan of the guitar tone. It sounds like you probably plugged in an electric-acoustic, am I right? To me, the song keeps seeming to slip between emphasizing beats 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 (BOOM-chick BOOM-chick vs. boom-CHICK boom-CHICK). I think it would be cool to stick with the first feel until that harmonic change that happens on “time” of the line “when you lead all the time”. It would give a feeling of release to it. This is a neat song though, FIVE star worthy.

Frankie Big Face: This is classic Frankie in a very positive sense of the word. Great orchestration, great performance, superb songwriting. You have a distinct harmonic sense, that for sure. At the end of one of the choruses (chori??) I was hoping it would really rock out with the verse structure and a guitar solo or something. That’s my only criticism. FIVE stars.

Zealous feat. Darkheart: Ill fly beatz yo, fer shizzle. I’m not a big fan of the organ, but the use of classical music in rap is common, I know. The chorus is very catchy, and the rapping is excellent. FIVE stars.

Cranial Biffida: This music is pretty cool, but it doesn’t really go anywhere. The vocal processing is awesome. More than any song, this song evokes to me what it might feel like to realize that you are a glutton. In that sense, it is excellent. FOUR stars.

Raindownhell: I made it through this one! It was pretty interesting, but it would be nice if the vocals were a little more intelligible. THREE stars.

Stylon Pison: This song is sweet! There are some great lines in this song. It is also neat how you start with the chorus. It’s an often overlooked songwriting technique that can be effective. The only thing I don’t like is that buzz saw guitar. Nice “fry” ostinato at the end. FIVE stars.

MC Paul Denyer: The rapping isn’t too great on this. The “beat” is really repetitive, and when the synth comes in on top, it’s just plain annoying. TWO stars.

Wages of Sin: This has a cool 80’s vibe. It reminds me of that one song where they say “it’s Monday”. Does anyone know what song I’m talking about? Just curious, what software/hardware did you use for the drums and synths? FOUR stars.
Zipline: The vocals on this aren’t too great. Also, when the guitar goes to the bluesy riffs, it seems out of place. The drums are nice, but why are they all in my left ear? The best thing about this is the live feel it has. THREE stars.

Billy’s little trip feat. Steve Durand: Cool early punk rock feel. I love the “thwacky” bass sound. The guitars seem a little low in the mix, or the bass to high. A little less distortion might give them a little more presence. Sweet trumpet chops. Sounds a little out in places, but it’s cool have trumpet on a punk rock sound. Gives it a little ska vibe. FOUR stars.

Chuck Chuck Moose: This is us. I was pumped to be able to get live drums on it. I wish I would have done a few more takes on the solo, but it was really late.

Finding Nemoy: This is really nice. I’m not a huge fan of the doubled vocals, however, and they’re out of tune enough at a few points to be irritating. The background “and it’s mine” vocal could be louder. Songwise, however, no complaints. I think it would actually be better with just a single guitar track. FIVE stars.

Scrap Heap: Creepy. Annoying. I don’t know. The vocals aren’t rhythmic. It sounds like something keeps feeding back. TWO stars.

Ratt Poizon: Sweet black Sabbath sound. I think this would be cooler if the vocals were less processed and more melodic. Also, if there were vocals over the more melodic riff that would be a nice touch. THREE stars.

EPP: There’s some nice rapping here, and the “beat” is pretty cool. The way different elements that come in and out helps in not to become as tiresome. I think this needs a chorus to tie it together and repeat the title a little more. FOUR stars.

J.R. Stinkenstein: This is okay. Four what it is, it could be shorter, or have instrumental breaks, or something. THREE stars.

Wreckdom: This does a pretty good job evoking gluttony. THREE stars.

Pigpen: The piano and the strings don’t seem to go together harmonically. The hits on condescention are cool, as well as the following section. A little too repetitive and long, though. THREE stars.

Glenn Case: The alternating 4 and 3 bars is awesome. The vocals harmonies are perfectly executed and add a lot. The bass sounds really good as well. I love everything about the song except its length. I wanted more! FIVE stars.

Gentlemen thieves: This is okay, although not highly original. If you’re going to play music like this, you better through in some sweet flamenco stuff. THREE stars.

Thanks for the Frisbee: Very nice. You and Nemoy should get together and write the most plaintive, beautiful, simple songs ever. This is another song that a single instrument would work better on. FIVE stars.

The Author: I think this might have gotten tagged wrong, but it’s the one with piano. I like the classical-pop sound. It works well. This reminds me of radiohead without the noisy experimentation. FOUR stars.

I hope that’s all of them.

Glutton Reviews

Ratt Poizon- This is my favorite Ratt Poizon song to date. In fact I like better than anything Ratt or Poison have ever done. Well, maybe not better than "Scene of the Crime" by Ratt. Seriously, this is recorded well, and the vocals provoke images of a big fat giant glutton. The harmonic solo is a little weak compared to the rest of the song, I gues I'd like to hear a raunchy solo over the harmonics as a rhythm guitar. Great song! Keeper.

Wreckdom- This is dark. The riffs are grating. Not into it. Recorded well I guess.

Billy's Little Trip- Rockin Vox, rockin song. Love the bass tone. Mechanical drums are a little too upfront. You get a zillion points for the collab with Steve Durand, the horn solo takes this good song up several notches. We need to get you a live drummer! Great song!

Brandon Ellison- I wish the piano was higher in the mix, I struggle to hear it when the vox and drums are going. This sounds like it should be on the soundtrack for "The Cook the Thief, his Wife and Her Lover". Dark and eerie. Good stuff!

Chuck Chuck Moose- I hate 12-bar blues. However all the playing is fantastic. Vocals are very sweet and well done. Violin solo is great.Everything is played well. I wish it was Swing or Bop or Rock or Bluegrass, the 12-bar blues is only interesting if you're BB King or Stevie Ray Vaughen (to me). I guess I should file this under not my genre, but damn you guys are great players!

Cranial Biffida- That drum machine pattern gets annoying at about 2 minutes and then there's a whole lot more of it. I like the big chords of it all. Female vox are nice. I know this is supposed to be all about the words, but I can't make them out. I generally don't care about lyrics anyway. I think this would be stronger at 3minutes. I enjoy the one listen, but I can't see myself seeking repeated listens, though it is nice background music, especially for Fury of Dracula or Mall of Horror (boardgames).

Emergency Pizza Party- I dig this. This takes me back to 1984 and my 1st job as a "break dancer". Ouch! Yikes, I can't do that stuff anymore. OK I don't like the 1st rapper, I like the 2nd, I love the female rapper, the 4th is alright, I like the enthusiasm of the 5th but it doesn't flow too well, 6th is alright. Same female? I dig her again or as well. Fun song.

Finding Nemoy- Brilliant! I wish I could get my hands on this track and add bass, drums, and lead guitar. Not that it really needs it, its just great! Love the melody, I love the dynamics and conviction of the acoustic guitar. Fantastic!

Frankie Big Face- I'm sorry but the delivery and vibrato is soo near Davey Jones, what's he going by these days? I wish I could sing like this. I love your voice! This is very strong! This is the song to beat. Strings are great, famele vox are great! This is a gem and a keeper. I think it would've been stronger to end at 4:10 with a big note at the end of the chorus. The 3rd verse is nice, but unecessary to me. Great job!

Gentlemen Thieves- This reminds me of Ween. That's a good thing. I'm enjoying the Hell out of this! Not a very ambitious song, but nothing to complain about. Very good!

Glenn Case- The double N Glenn, (I'm the Triple N), somebody else say "instant classic". Yeah this is a classic. Production is great, nice hook. This actually reminds me of my best friends band Stewboss. This is the exact kind of track you're supposed to shop to record companies, no intro, no solos, get's to the refrain quickly. I predict this will win, and I just might help it along with my vote. Contender, keeper, don't mind listening to this repeatedly at all.

Jim Tyrrell- Very well done. Nice voice! Ever get the Gordon Lightfoot comparison? This sounds like an acoustic with a pickup that's plugged in rather than a miked acoustic. Minor complaint, it just makes an acoustic sound plasticy to me. Wish the piano was higher in the mix. Nice song needs a better ending, but very good.

Jolly Roger-This is a pretty rockin song. The recording sounds like you're in the next room with the door closed. Short and sweet. Cool song.

JR Stinkenstein- I was really afraid I wasn't going to get to hear Paco this week. Whew. This is great makes me want to drink beer and dance with a waitress. Nice country ditty! It's all about the slide stuff for me.

MC Paul Denyer- Why do all these Scottish guys sound like they want to be urban American? Not into it.

Melvin- I love this song, everytime I listen to this fight, I can't get the "thank you Lord for this beautiful day" out of my head. Particularly disturbing for an Athiest. This song is the usual Melvin brilliance. Top 5 in the fight. Maybe a vote, certainly a contender. This rocks!

Octothorpe- This reminds me of the Velvet Underground. This is funny, very enjoyable.

Pigpen- I really like this. Patches are cheesy, vocal delivery is tentative, somehow it all works. This would be fun to cover with Zipline. Good stuff!

Scrap Heap- I hope it was a quick and painless session.

Stylon Pilson- I really wanted to poke holes in this, but I can't. This is really good! I guess I'd like to hear Bernard Butler wailing over the top and have the London Suede sass turned up a bit. Those aren't complaints, just how I would alter an already great song. Nice vox!

Thanks For the Frisbee- I wish this guy was my neighbor and we could work on his album. I'm incredibly impressed with the abundance of cathcy and original songs this guy can produce. This song is beautiful and emotional. I'm a big fan, thi smight get my vote also.

Wages of Sin- Very cool, I'm very very very pleased to see and delightfully hear this new era of Wages in collabs. This suits your voice really well. good song.

Yes Yes No Yes- Why is this song? Groovy bass, I like the end too.

Zealous 1 featuring Dark Heart- Everytime I hear this, I scoot my chair back turn around, turn on my Hammond and jam along. I couldn't care less about the raps, they're OK, not bad, I really dig the drum groove with the organ.

Zipline- My project this week. Damn this was fun. It was a weird session, all 3 of us came with a pre-concieved song, all of which were thrown out as other random riffs came up. These guys are really fun to write with. A lot of my playing is sloppy, Sammy steals the show as usual. I like Martys voice, maybe I listen to too much Tim Kinsella. I like my solo, maybe it's not my best, hope you liked it. This week Stylon Pilson was in my head as we were jamming and I was trying to solo, I got a little psyched out, maybe I'll cut it. We'll see.

Rain Dwon in Hell- I purposefully put this at the end of my playlist, because I don't really like to hear short pop songs after an epic dark noise sculpture. This reminds me of An Index of Metals by Fripp and Eno. There's some great noises going on here. This actually takes me back to college, I feel like I'm at a fellow artists installation. The first time I heard "Heavenly music Corporation" my friend asked me how long do you think that was. In all honesty I answered "about 5 minutes", it's a 21 minute ambient song. I feel that way about this song, I get into it and the time starts to fly by. Ever see Idiot Flesh with the Buttoh dancers? Thsi is excellent Buttoh dance music. I wish this resulted in a fast tempo quirky riff like Monkey from Idiot Flesh. Have you heard Idiot Flesh? You'd love them! I can't understand a word, but that doesn't matter. Cool song.

Wormsweater- Can't get it to play, I'm bummed too, I was looking forward to it.

Thanks For the Frisbee, Melvin, GlennCase, Frankie Big Face are my contenders tough call. All potential winners, I think Glenn Case is getting my vote.[/u]

I really want to take the time to respond to all of the reviews as the members took the time to listen and offer their comments.

Nice drum programming. The symbols are a bit hollow, especially the ride which is a bit mechanical and the samples all sound a bit low res. Kind of reminds me of an old nirvana track (can't think which I'm a bit rusty on my old Nirvana knowledge). This isn't a bad track though, the trumpet definatly elevates it higher up the group. Niiice. It might be a grower.

I have to once again thank Steve for offering a trumpet solo on this song. It really took it to a whole different level. I love the clean horn with the dirty back drop. I seem to get a lot of Nirvana references which is interesting because I never got into Nirvana other than what I've heard on the radio. But I love to go look up bands when someone says I sound like them. Probably a subliminal thing of a part of a song I heard and I stored it away in the back of my brain. No one ever seems to reference the giants that I'm actually standing on the shoulders of, which is probably a good indication that I suck so bad that I can't even sound like the guys I love, lol. Thanks for the comments
obscurity wrote: BLT&SD: fucking cool bassline. Hats/cymbals mixed way too loud, Vocals need more presence. I bet I'd enjoy flailing across the dancefloor like a psycho to this.
The cymbals seem to be an issue with everyone, so I'm trying new things that will show in future fights. If I can make even one person flail across the dance floor like a psycho, my work is done. Thanks

Song: I had a tough time understanding the lyrics and tie in to the title
Production: Some effects on the drums might bring them into the fold a little more
Performance: Excellent job there, Steve.
Overall: NMG, the best part of this for me was the brass.
Maybe if I said the title a few times in the song it would have helped, but it just wasn't in the cards on this one and almost never is. I never title a song until it's done, and even then it doesn't get a title until it's time to write one down on a list.. I then use something from the chorus. But writing a song from a title is a whole different deal. By the way, greed is a form of gluttony. I just couldn't bring myself to write about food or substance abuse because I'm a glutton in a way and I don't like nor hate myself enough to be inspired. You'd really hate my heavy metaphorical tunes, lol.
I agree on the brass, it really made the song. Thanks for your honesty. I'll work on the drum sound more, but I'm not sure how to make my lyrics more understandable other then moving them way up front and lose my Cali accent. Even though I pour my soul into my singing, I'm verbally lazy, lol. Thanks micro
WeaselSlayer wrote: Billy's Little Trip feat. Steve Durand - I swear you've tapped into something so many people wish they could. That sound people magically found when everyone else was listening to hardcore, sounding somehow ancient and new at the same time. And then that fucking brass comes in and just brings it to a new level of slacker-cool. Steve's the raddest older dude here, I'm convinced. Everything about this just pricks my ears up and makes them stay there.
That's really all I want to do. I'm not reinventing the wheel with my music, but I'd like to lay something down that people that enjoy raw music the way I do, listen to it, get pumped and at the end say, I think I tasted a little cinnamon in that piece.
Thanks Luke, I see you and I collaborating in the future. Raw insanity is a must in my book. :)
jolly roger wrote: Billy's Little Trip feat. Steve Durand - I listened to this one before the reviews, just because I couldn't believe that there would be a combination like this. First, mixing stuff - I think vocals could probably be higher in the mix, since I can't understand you. Don't be afraid to pump those up. You have a good voice, especially for the style. These are fake drums, right? Not bad sounding ... you just need to fix them in the mix a bit I think. The hi hat sounds good in the mix, but the ride is killing me. Bringing up the guitar a bit would be good ... I'm actually hearing far more bass than guitar. Bring up the trumpet in the fast part. The rest of the time it sounds sweet. Songwise ... sweet song. I'm pumped to hear more of your stuff.
Vocals and cymbals seem to be my issues for sure. I hope to bring those inline a bit more in the near future with the new stuff I'm learning here. Thanks Roger
stylonpilson wrote:Billy's Little Trip - I quite like the hook in the chorus, and really wish the vocals had been audible on this track. The ride cymbal made me feel uncomfortable - it felt loud. The inclusion of a trumpet is awesome. One of these days, I'll get my trumpet out of the garage, and then everyone will say "Hey, Stylon nicked that idea from BLT!" You bastard.
Well, I nicked the trumpet from Cake on this one, so hop on for the ride.
The ride cymbal is one of my issues on this one that I just didn't hear. That's why these reviews are awesome. Thanks styl.

Thanks Pedro. That f**king ride is going to be the death of me.

I can live with four stars. I think you're right on the guitars. I originally had them way up front, but I wanted the trumpet to come in at a level above everything else to give it a voice of it's own, so I dropped the guitar back and brought the bass up because I felt the bass and trumpet compliment each other better. I like my grind I use, but I mixed in some reverb at the end to tie everything together and the rhythm guitar dropped back a bit more. Thanks Chuck

Sorry, I've no idea what song you're referring to.

All sounds that were not Wages' voice came from a collection of VSTs running in cubase, as follows:

Drums come from a Kawai K50e (kick) and Alesis SR16 (snares and hats), both of which provided by the Nostalgia vst. Kicks went through a multiband compressor and had a teeeny bit of reverb added, snares went through guitar rig and had a small amount of reverb, hats were completely dry.

Guitar sounds courtesy of 2 instances of Realguitar (one with heavy reverb, one sent trough guitar rig), and two instances of Virtual Guitarist Electric Edition (one sent through Izotope Trash, one dry).

Bass came from Reaktor.

Chorus arpeggios courtesy of Hypersonic.

Choir sounds come from Kontakt 2.

(No need to wait till the fight's over for me to reveal all my secrets - I'm not gonna win anyway :) )

One of EPP's male vocalists sounds a LOT like Tycho from Penny Arcade. I assumed they were the PA crowd.

Well it's both of us -- I'm the lead vox and glenny helps back the chorus "Get Fat" part. I admit there are problems with this vocal performance: the volumn is all over the place, the vocals get hot and clip, the VERSE comes off as less than deliberate because the VERSE vocal timing and melody are not worked out. Also, I think the CHORUS would have been better served sung in a lower register.

That said, don't tell me that isn't the catchiest PRECHORUS/CHORUS you've heard in a long time. "Ex -- er -- cise is just not fuk-in for me!" "If I eat too much will I?" "GET FAT"!

Try singing that while hiking up a mountain -- it's very inspiring.

Well excuses aside, I totally agree with your assessment on what we could have done (separate vocal take) and how people react (bad vox == bad song). Doing separate overlay takes would require us to rework our whole operation of live improvised sessions. It would be easier if I could work out what I'm trying to do faster, and sing into the mic with the same distance and volumn during the session. Once again, I'll take the fall for this one (thus my alias choice).

Thanks for all the rave reviews on the band side and musically! The real hero with all our entries over the past three weeks has been Glenny's mix-down capabilities.

Actually, it's a 16-bar blues for most of the song. Jeez, get it right, haha.

I listened to a little of each, since it was so late at night. The only one that got me to stick around for the whole thing -- twice -- was Glenn Case. I loved it, my wife loved it, the kids were asleep, but that's not your fault. Just terrific.

Glenn Case
uhhh... I can see why people would like this. Kinda cool. It just reminds me of this fuckin' fag at the bar tonight. he was an acoustic act. made me angry. well... maybe I shouldn't do reviews tonight? why not. you do sound great. I just don't like the way it's delivered.

Octothorpe
I like this. It really reminds me of Zoogz Rift. it's perfect, and on top of that it's probably all live which makes it super awesome. yes. thankyou.

Rain Down Hell
yes. well. Thankyou for doing something a little different sounding anyway. I don't really think GLUTTON! when i hear it... but this is pretty cool still. Awkwardly placed super fast thrash-metal would have made me love you. but I guess I don't hate it.

Finding Nemoy
are you the gay guy at the bar I had to listen to all night? If so.... eat shit and die. If not... this is alright. good job.

emergency pizza party
I hate rap (or hip-hop or whatever you kids call it now). I can tolerate some. Not this though. The music is great! but I cringe listening to this.... sorry. your name is good anyway?

scrap heap
no. well... alright. kind of fun for a little bit. but seriously, stop it. :)

stylin' pilsner
this is kinda cool. not really doing much for me. other than the distortion used in this... kinda sounds like an electroharmonics thing... I thought that was appropriate. I wanted to do my entry with my big muff pi pedal... but it's 300 miles away. I like french fries.

Thanks for the frisbee
stop singing like that. honestly. I'd absolutely love this song if you had some sort of octave lowering effect and you were trying to sound like satan. that would make me think you were the coolest. but you don't do that, do you? nope.... keep on sounding like the fag at the bar with the guitar.

Wages of sin
I liked this... a little anyway. for some reason I'm kinda picky. what really did it for me was all of the effects used and numberous vocal tracks and what not. I like that shit. the reverbed vocals sound excellent... everyone that said it was too much are jackasses.

Worm sweater
I like your name. too bad you're a hippie.

yes maybe nah perhaps
the wah is kinda cool. that's about it.

Jr Stinkenstein
I LOVE this one! excellent country execution. has that early beck country feel to the lyrics. production is great as well.... you are cool.

chuck chuck moose
eh.... yeah this is ok. I don't really hate the vocals or anything but the non-singing parts are really good I think. honestly a little boring for me though. but that's alright.

zealous 1 feat. dark heart
nope. the loops are cool. that's it. stop it.

gentlemen thieves
I think I liked this.... makes me want to listen to buenos tardes amigo and watch an estaban infomercial. yep. thanks.

I have really awful gas! the kind of gas that makes you sick... usually your own gas is tolerable.... but christ! what did I eat?

Mc Paul Denyer
well.... if you're kinda joking this is cool. I honestly think I've made a similar drum machine music loop type thing like this. hmmm? yeah... I guess out of all the rap-like entries I like this the best. I still hate it.

Cranial Biffida
reminds me of a sepultura intro! but you don't do anything cool after it. you just made a really repititious 8 minute intro as far as I'm concerned. stop it.

Jim Tyrell
so these aren't real drums huh? they sound great. I think the song's kinda gay.... but you know. I'm fucking RattPoizon. 8) damn hippes.

billies little trip
This could be good... but has way too much of a punk sound to it. I hate punk. It's executed good I guess. But this makes me angry. The trumpet lightens it up and makes it much more listenable. If it were an instrumental I'd probably love it.... but you know.

Rolly Joger
I don't like it. the distortion sounds kinda cool sometimes though. uhhhhhhhhhhh.... that's about it.

melvin
hate the vocals. I'm not one for the sexually confused harmonies. if it weren't for that.. this would be pretty good! production sounds awesome!

brandon ellison
I really, REALLY like that ride cymbal with the piano. this reminds me of something...... I shouldn't like this, but I do. good job!

RattPoizon
I hate this because of the solo. I wanted lightning fast arpegios and I got a fat drunk josh at 5 a.m. which I guess would also fall into the glutton category, so it works. I'm just pissed about it. and the vocals suck. but at least they're not gay.

Pig Pen
uhhh..... parts of this have a cool sound. the halfway part makes me want to change my mind and say this is good.... but then I don't.

Frankie Big Face
honestly this is pretty good. but only if you meant to have the really noticeable guitar string sliding noise... it sounds great. well I forgot, the chorus or whatever that would be called kind of sucks in my opinon. this song's a little boring, but it certainly sounds good.

Zip line
this has potential of being good... basically leaves me hoping for something else. sounds like the drummer is having fun through the majority of it though. certainly some creative stuff going on. I hope to hear more from you. only better. :)

best for last.....

WreckdoM
Here we have a beautiful song! I wish there was some sort of a surprising switch up in the middle... but other than that.... AWESOME. lyrics are beautiful. I think that WrattslayerdoM should do a song sometime. unfortunately I seriously doubt that will be possible. I love you.
