Banff?

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

Banff?

Post by anti-m »

Eh... this is pretty FAR off-topic for a music-making site... but here goes!

Skiing in Banff --I hear Banff is pretty spectacular for this wacky sport of sliding down mountains on slats of wood. I am a complete and utter noob. (I grew up in Chicago where the biggest hill around was a landfill. No lie.) My BF grew up skiing in Utah.

Have any of you been there / skied there? Are there secret places to stay there / ski there without spending a bajillion dollars? Are the slopes there appropriate both for someone who'll spend the entire day "snowplowing" down green trails as well as for someone who grew up skiing in Utah?

Any feedback would be appreciated!

It's pronounced: BanF!F! or at least that's what we thought when I first went there in 1972. Woke up to a black bear chowin' down on the neighbor's crate of food (idiots!) It was cool to watch this beast from our tent about 20 yards away go all ape on a wooden box of what seemed to be canned goods. Something must have leaked. Actually it scared me to death.

Went back a few years later on the way to Alaska. My dad didn't like to fly for some reason. He was a navigator in bombers so maybe I shouldn't ask.

Banff is tremendous in the summer. Can't say about skiing, but in March I'll have opinions about Whistler :)

Make sure you take about $1000 more than you planned on spending. It's really expensive in Banff. Beautiful place though.

Live about an hour from Banff. I've gone there tons of times, but never skiied. This is a pretty unpredictable time for weather round here, so not sure if you'd want to go now (it's about 0-5 degrees celsius right now, but a week ago it was about minus 40 with windchill! Yikes!) I usually go once or twice during the summer and hike up the mountains and buy fudge from the chocolate store. Even if you don't ride the mountains, it's a really cool place. Come to think of it, almost anywhere in the rockies is a cool place to visit ... Kananaskis, Jasper, Lake Louise especially ... look into it.

You're thinking of the episode of F-Troop where Larry Storch played the duel role as The Burglar of BanF!F! as well as Corporal Agarn
