Great band ideas that you'll never actually do.
I came up with one today at work-
"The Manrapes", a hardcore punk band who play songs about forced prison sex. Members include Tyrone 'Bubba' Blackshaft, a large black man, as lead singer, Whitey Soapdropper, a skinny, feminine white boy on bass, Buff Ballsack, a weightlifter type on drums, and dual-guitar mayhem provided by Ricky Rimjob and Gimp Jism.
Song titles would be such as "You My Bitch", "You Can Punk Whitey For 3 Smokes", "Toss My Salad", and "Glazed and Confused"
This would be a huge hit, if executed properly, but I just can't even think seriously about doing it, because the whole idea kind of sickens me.
What great band ideas have you people had?

sort of off topic here...but a seriously good idea that my band has been slow about executing.
We want each member to pick four songs that are influential to them that relate to the type of music the band is playing as a whole. Make a CD of these 16 songs and listen to it a great number of times within the same month the band is writing and recording songs.
We feel this would help glue everybody's ideas and influences automatically into a nice soft and warm morning blend of punk rock.
ON TOPIC, I always wanted to be in a punk rock band that did nothing but cover popular hit songs just a little heavier and a little faster. I cried just a little when I first heard Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. True story, 'cept the crying part.

There's also this thread with the same basic idea:

A nü-metal parody Songfight all-star band. They would do bad rap metal and be the villainous opposite numbers of the Frontalittle Squad.

Expand your horizons a bit, man. I'm talking about an actual touring band, MTV, mass appeal, etc. (well, in my case, *very limited* mass appeal) Something that would be considered 'commercially viable' as far as gimick bands go.Niveous wrote:A nü-metal parody Songfight all-star band. I wanted to start a Muppet cover band, but then I found out that it had already been done. (And they're great!)

I always wanted to be in a band that did live kareoke. 6 or 7 talented musicians, in a pub, with random people coming up and singing. And we could play all the kareoke standards. Few thousand songs.
I suppose to qualify for this thread, I should point out that when we were big, we'd be the band for 'stars in their eyes' and accompany all the pop / american idol singers when they did their contests. And celebrities. Like a philharmonic orchestra for pop.

Surely better would be muppet songs by people who pretend to be really simple? They could be called ...anti-m wrote:I wanted to start a Muppet cover band, but then I found out that it had already been done. (And they're great!)

I had an idea a couple years ago: a punk rock CD for children.
I've always thought children wanted more than the Wheels on the Bus, but a lot of punk rock wasn't so fit for kids (i.e. I don't want my own kids listening to the Ramones' Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue.)
So I'm proud to say I finally went and did it, and the CDs arrived at my house this past Tuesday: Jam Toast — Silly grown-ups, punk is for kids.
Check out http://www.jamtoast.ca to learn more, read lyrics, check out some Jam Toast tunes, and even be the first on your block to buy your very own copy of the CD.
Cheers.

Punk rock is for children. Grab a six-pack at Half-a-Dozen Records.

I'd go to see this, but then I remembered Gwen Stephanie is already doing it, and I wouldn't go see her. But she was good on SNL. The band kicks ass.jeff robertson wrote:Music played by marching band, lyrics shouted by cheerleaders. All lyrics are extremely pornographic.

I wanted a country/ cowpunk band led by a redneck version of GG Allin. Every show would have been as wild as Bob's Country Bunker on "The Blues Brothers." If the crowd wasn't rowdy enough, the singer would instigate a reaction by pooping on a picture of George Bush and fellating a statue of of Al Sharpton.
But rednecks aren't very punk, and vice versa. Except a very few, so I couldn't even get it started. But if everyone from SF was in one place....
