what the.. what the hell is wrong with you people?
1) lcd soundsystem is terrible
2) built to spill is about the best ever
3) from premises (1) and (2) one can deduce they do not have a similar sound
modus tolens, dudes. come on. all albums by lcd soundsystem are awful. i listened to them and the only decent song was "yeah (pretentious version)." then i looked at the title and saw what it was called, and rolled my eyes, because fuck a lcd soundsystem.

By the way, I was the only one to make that "similar" comment, so I'll take this bullet. But, there is a rhyme to my reason and it has nothing to do with sound or neck beards. After reading lyrics, writing style and listening to delivery of said lyrics, both Doug Martsch and the LCD singer, James Murphy if I remember correctly, both gave me the feeling that they were both huge Frank Black and/or Bowie fans. Martsch more Bowie and LCD more Frank Black. It's a known fact that Frank Black was, and is, a big Bowie fan and Bowie influenced his writing and sound. Anyway, there's my rhyme to my reason.mkilly wrote:what the.. what the hell is wrong with you people?

Wow. I saw BTS and thought it was a great show. I was really impressed and went out to buy their CDs. Go figure.WeaselSlayer wrote:Built to Spill is fucking boring as hell, LCD is fucking great. I saw Built to Spill live and it was fucking so bad.

Ok, I finally gave these LCD guys a listen. (Thankyou gootunes!) BLT, I feel better now about your 4-four non-blondes comparison now, 'cause man, those dudes sound NOTHING like Built to Spill!

Luke, I hear ya, sometimes Built to Spill plays bad shows -- complete with interminable guitar noodling and inviting all their friends (i.e. Caustic Resin) up on stage to play with them. They're still one of my faves, tho'. The last time I saw them, they played a wonderful cover of "Dream Operator." For the new user, I recommend "There's Nothing Wrong with Love," although my favorite album is "Perfect From Now On."

Come on! Rockin' with Cello! What's not to love?

(BTW -- JB, I'm still waiting patiently!)

Speaking of Cello goodness, I just saw the Books for the third time. God I love those guys. Hasten to their next show.

...and I never said they "sound" the same, sheeez. Read the lyrics and tell me they don't come from the Frank Black school of art in the form of sound....ummm, school...academy.

I don't find Frank Black influence, or David Bowie influence, in LCD Soundsystem, lyrically. Doug Martsch (as Boise Cover Band) did cover Ashes to Ashes by Bowie, though. Also they've covered Daniel Johnston.
Built to Spill as a live act is super good, musically, but things can get too jammy. and Doug takes like five minutes between every single fucking song to tune his guitar and whatever. LCD Soundsystem though... man... that's one for the I Just Don't Get It thread.

I'll bet you anything that if you dig for info, you'll find that Murphy, err (Murry?) from LCD is a Frank Black fan. There is no way he could be so similar in his writing style without being influenced by him. But either way, I like LCD.
edit: OK, I had to give it a try. I LOVE Google and wiki pedia. There were a number of things confirming my feeling. I should be happier than I am that I noze how to call'em.

For Doug Martsch, second to the last is Bowie. WoOt!

For "James Murphy" < now I know his name for sure:
OK, this is weak, but he was in a band named "Pony" and they were a Pixies sound alike band. That's all I have time for.

Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. I came for the campy prowrestling reference name and stayed for some cool countrified rock.

"Hefty Fine" by Bloodhound Gang.
Been a fan since 'One Fierce Beer Coaster' was released, but I never got around to hearing their latest album- it rocks. "Ralph Wiggum" is my new favorite song, ever. BG is the only hiphop I can tolerate, and Jimmy Pop can spit out tongue-twisters that would make most rappers soil their panties. Listen to 'Asleep at the Wheel' on Beer Coaster for example.
Do MCF fanboys just sort of glaze over the fact that these guy did, in fact, invent 'nerdcore' like 4 or 5 years before Front did it?
